Joanna and Chip Gaines have rocketed to fame with their new HGTV hit show Fixer Upper. Natural and unassuming, they have a relaxed charm and appeal-ing chemistry that shines through as they help clients purchase a home and reno-vate it to function for today’s lifestyle.

Appearing for four presentations during the Home Show, they will describe the evolution of their small town home ren-ovation business and their rapid success on HGTV, sharing their goal to inspire others to “own their space.”

Joanna describes her design style as simple and classic, farm inspired, in-dustrial, and unexpected. But she notes that “at the end of the day, I work for my client. My job isn’t to push my style on them, it is to pull their style out and make it all come together. I like the chal-lenge of any and all design styles.”

When asked for a few tips for some-one who wants to start freshening their home without a large budget, she suggests starting small with cosmetic changes or re-arranging a room to better fit the family’s needs. “Don’t be afraid to break the rules. For example, an unused formal living or dining room could be-come a playroom for the kiddos. I try to make the home work for the homeown-ers needs,” she said. “We try to encour-age others to try something new and not be afraid to go with your gut. Just start.”

“For me, money spent on a home is an investment. I try to keep it simple with timeless and classic finishes, and acces-sories which are easily changed can be more trendy. I try to think how I can set a client up to enjoy their home ten years down the road so they are not constantly re-investing.”

Many of the homes shown on Fixer Upper that clients are considering pur-chasing are in need of extensive work and are labeled the worst house on the block, but Chip and Joanna can usually see the potential. “What you see on the show is really how the process works, we really do surprise the clients with the finished product,” she added. “It’s nerve-wracking trying to choose for others. When meeting with clients, I suggest they bring at least ten pictures from Houzz and Pinterest of rooms that speak to them. I try to find a recurring theme to give me a sense of their style. I’m terrified of not pleasing a client. As Chip says, this is a real renovation with a real client’s budget, and we face real budget issues.”

The couple is busy but enjoying life. In addition to raising four kids, renovating their own home, owning a real estate sales company, and developing a gated community of villas in Waco, Texas, Joanna also has a retail online and store-front company, Magnolia Market.

“Chip is a true entrepreneur. He has had many businesses, but this one has stuck,” Joanna said. “I think we both have found our passion.”

At this year’s show, the latest finishes and products will be on display in a full size model home to allow pa-trons to touch and feel the surfaces in an actual room. Homebuilder and for-

mer HBA president Chris Ragland will build a 700 square foot one bedroom, one bathroom showhouse inside Bartle Hall open for Home Show visitors to walk through.

“The purpose of the showhouse is to give consumers a chance to see some new finishes that are out there and also some new products available for build-ing a home. It’s a very sophisticated, dreamy getaway,” said Chris of the structure. She hopes people will be in-spired by the colors and finishes when they are building or remodeling their own home.

Built with a covered porch, accents of reclaimed lumber, pebble-tiled floor-ing and solid-surface countertops, the showhouse will feature a variety of new design and construction elements. For example, the structure features a high-density engineered wood subfloor and a built-in zip system for the walls that provides a continuous air barrier for better energy efficiency.

Design Trends on Display at Home Showat McCray Lumber and Millwork, then taken apart and re-assembled and dec-orated inside Bartle Hall – in four days! The exterior features James Hardie shin-gle siding and trim. Ragland said this product has been popular in the other parts of the country and is gaining pop-ularity here. It’s a concrete siding that

can handle high hu-midity year round. It is durable prod-uct that is weather and pest resistant and very rarely re-quires painting. One side of the build-ing shows the con-struction process in progress with the

rafter trussing and roof underlayment exposed.

Barn wood has been used in several places as accents, including the kitch-en, fireplace and walls in the bedroom and bath. “Barn wood has made a huge comeback with people being more green and recycling,” noted Chris.

Other design trends displayed include a freestanding tub, old schoolhouse vanity and pebble floor in the bath. Hardwood floors create a warm, inviting feel. In the kitchen, visitors will see painted cabine-try, a farmhouse sink, and solid-surface countertops with an under-counter bev-erage refrigerator. Wilson Lighting pro-vided creative and state of the art light fixtures and pendants.

Chris and her husband Roy own a cus-tom home building business which has served over 250 clients, mainly in Clay and Platte counties in Missouri. The homes that the Raglands build are known for their clean lines, cutting-edge looks and forward-thinking designs. She is a Certified Green Professional.

“I really enjoy working with home-owners to create their dream space,” said Chris.

After the Home Show, this year’s show-house will be donated to the Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Council, 2015 Home Show community partners, for use at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reser-vation. Due to this future use, the show-house has been fondly nick-named “The Scout Shack.”

McCray Lumber | McCray Lumber donated the materials for the trusses, hardware, flooring, walls and siding. Heartland Truss provided the trusses. Simpson Strong-Tie is the maker of the hardware throughout the shack. Boise/Huber contributed the I-joist, Advan-Tech subfloor, Zip Wall and Zip Roof. James Hardie is the maker of the lap sid-ing, trim, soffit and fascia for the Scout Shack.

McCray Millwork | McCray Millwork graciously provided the interior trim displayed.

Dennis E. Tuck Archituckture | Tuck, a local custom designer, provided the architectural floor plan for the Scout Shack.

Weber Flooring | The carpeting was do-nated by Weber Flooring. The flooring in the bathroom is a pebble tiled floor that is a combination of multi-colored, sliced mosaic pebble and a Premier brand 4x4 slate tile. In the kitchen and living room, reclaimed whitewash oak planks by Quickstep finish off the floor-ing.

Kohler white apron farmhouse kitchen sink, as well as a countertop utility sink with legs for the vanity in the bathroom.

Precision Woods Inc. | The kitchen cab-inets, designed and created by Precision Woods Inc., are shaker style, both in the cabinet structure and the doors. The cabinets are painted to enhance their natural beauty.

Elmwood Reclaimed Timber | Elmwood is a streamlined, environmentally con-scious company that takes timber and re-purposes it to create stunning wood features for homes and businesses. They donated 400 square feet of Rocky Mountain Mosaic reclaimed paneling.

Hayes Company | Hayes Company do-nated a 33-inch Lennox electric fire-place, which comes fully equipped with a convenient remote control.

Century Roofing | Century Roofing, the largest roofing company in Kansas City and a family owned business, donated a 30-year Tamko roof.

Wilson Lighting | A full service light-ing and design store in Kansas, Wilson provides unique and top-notch acces-sories to complement the aesthetics of any home.

Top Master Inc. | Top Master provided the Silestone products displayed in the Scout Shack. Silestone is a solid-surface countertop that boasts high resistance to stains and scratches, while still main-taining versatility in color and style.

Scott Swift | Swift generously donated his time and services to be the master trim carpenter.

JW Design Remodel | The interior de-sign for the Scout Shack was provided by JW Design Remodel, a company serving the Greater Kansas City area.
