IntroductionKNX: the first standard for building automation

The KNX Standard

Flexibility, comfort and also energy savings are today ’s main requirements in the field of modern building installations. The KNX Standard was created to meet all these requirements. It results from 10 years of experience collected by the associations BatiBus, KNX/EIB and EHS (European Home System) and it is the first open standard for home and buildingcontrol. KNX guarantees the compatibility of products and systems from different manufacturers according to EN 50090.Also our company was engaged in the establishment of this Standard.

Woertz offers devices with KNX Standard.Standards are significant for:- manufacturers- planers and builders

KNX as a system for business building

Thanks to KNX, just one bus system is required for controlling an intelligent building. Lighting, heating, cooling and security installations may be controlled through a unique and flexible system which can easily be extended. The systembasically consists of actuators and sensors which are able to receive or transmit instructions via the bus system. Thanks to the development of new products intended for heating, cooling and ventilation processes (HVAC) the decentra-lised room automation has taken a big step forward. The use of our fancoil controllers (room temperature controllers)provides high flexibility for the planning and for the electrical installation, associated to quick mounting time and easyhandling.

Building automationActuators for flat cable ecobus combi 5x2.5mm2 + 2x1.5 mm2 / 3L + N + PE + 2 Bus

To complete our flat cable system ecobus combi, we developed KNX/EIB actuators and sensors with integrated electronics. They are intendedfor the decentralised distribution of bus devices via flat cable and thus provide an optimal flexibility. Cabling works are considerably simplifiedand the connexion of the actuators can be established quickly and in a secure way thanks to the unique lever mechanism.

Example of application: decentralised distribution

Instead of large storey distribution boards with relays, SPC (stored program controller) etc., small decentralised distribution boards with buscomponents or preassembled bus elements are installed in all the rooms or in the corridor (in recesses, hollow ceilings, hollow floors, under-window-ducts etc.). The energy is led directly to the actuators and from there to the loads via short leads (if possible, using prefabricated plug-type leads). The sensors are connected with the bus conductor as required, regardless of load and quantity. In this way, the number of cablesused may be significantly reduced and the installation is far less time-consuming.

Building automationFancoil controllers and accessories

What is the use of a fancoil unit?

Fancoil devices can be used for the individual heating and cool-ing of rooms and can be applied wherever a central hot and coldsupply has been implemented, such as for example in small- ormedium-sized rooms in office buildings, hospitals or hotels.

How do HVAC installations using fancoil units work?

HVAC installations with fancoil units need a central heating orcooling water circuit.

Thanks to the development of new KNX/EIB products intended for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning processes (HVAC), the building auto-mation has taken a step forward. Our fancoil unit controllers allow the decentralised control and regulation of fancoil installations via KNX/EIB.Associated to our flat cable system ecobus combi - which combines power current and bus - the controllers proved to be a rational solution forroom automation.

The fancoil units are mounted in the rooms and are directly connected to the coldwater and warm water circuits. They allow the individual rooms to reach the des-ired temperature. Only one fancoil is necessary to provide heating, ventilating andair-conditioning.Heat exchangers and fans are the most important components of such installa-tions. Water flows into the heat exchangers, either hot or chilled depending on the temperature to reach. The flow of water is controlled by valves.Air is blown towards the heat exchanger by means of the fan, to be cooled or hea-ted before being filtered and directed into the room. The desired room tempera-ture is thus reached. The fan is driven by means of a motor. Motor and valves arecontrolled by the fancoil controller.

The modification of the temperature setpoint values and the useof the push-button for presence sensing helps for example to saveenergy, when you leave the room. It is also possible to control the fan speeds. Window contact sen-sors influence the performance of the fancoils when the windowsare opened. In the standard design, the outputs of the fancoilcontrollers act on 3-step motor valve drives and alter the flow ofenergy for heating and cooling.

Example of installation: fancoil controller in a hollow ceiling

Fancoil unit controllerThe fancoil unit controller can directly be connected to a temperature sensor. The recorded values are supplied to the controller as actual values. It is possible to implement further external sensors via the integrated KNX/EIB interface in order to set the individual comfort zone.

Multifunctional controller

Our experience in the field of heating, ventilatingand air-conditioning processes allowed us to deve-lop new versions of fancoil unit controllers. The controller for air conditioning and the controllerfor heating and cooling are the compact versions. The single version of the fancoil controller has alsobeen completed with a double multifunctional unitwith CO2 sensor. Its functions exceed by far the hea-ting and air-conditioning functions of a commonfancoil controller. In addition to the regulation of theroom temperature, this controller is also able tocheck the quality of the ambient air, thanks to a CO2sensor.

With the flat cable system, it is not necessary to cut the installedcables. Junctions can be created e.g. for the fancoil controllerusing special outlet boxes in the exact position required - evenat a later date - if necessary! The power supply and data businterface of the device are implemented on the same flat cable.Prefabrication is highly recommended to achieve even greateroperating efficiency: the connected appliances may be comple-tely wired beforehand and fitted with the flat cable boxes. Onthe building site the connection boxes are then simply placed onthe flat cable and the pointed screws tightened in order to esta-blish the electrical contact. Since the reliability of the flat cable installation systems is extre-mely high, they are more and more integrated in very importantindustrial projects.

To complete our flat cable system multibus, we developed a gateway. This ready for connection interface allows the connection between the MPbus of the company Belimo AG and KNX/EIB.

The device consists of a plastic housing with 6 modules, fitted with a plug-type connection (output). It has been conceived for DIN35 rail mounting. The whole range of Belimo MFT/MFT2 actuators, operated by MP-Bus, can be individually connected to this interface coupler and be integra-ted to the KNX/EIB network. The KNX/EIB interface is able to support up to 8 MP actuators - e.g. flap drives, valve drives, regulation ball valvedrives or flow rate controllers - intended for building automation. During commissioning the KNX/EIB Gateway is configurated with ETS (EIBTool Software). The requested drive channel is selected and parametrised for the needed drive type. Status indicators and push-buttons for programming the address- and test-functions are located on the front side of the device. There is also a plug intended for theBelimo hand-held parameter assignment device.Actual and setpoint values, status of the drive and also the values of passive or active sensors connected to the drive are transmitted viaKNX/EIB.

Operation modeActuators can be controlled digitally through the UK24EIB Gateway module over an MP-Bus system and provide a feedback signal of their actual operatingposition. In the UK24EIB module the digital information for control and feedback is converted into KNX/EIB messages so that the functions of the actuatorscan be input directly into a KNX/EIB system.

Sensor linkingOne sensor can be connected to each MFT2 actuator. The sensor can be of the passive resistance type (Pt 1000, Ni 1000 or NTC), of the active type (DC 0...10Voutput) or a switching contact. This provides a simple means of digitising the analogue signals from the sensors with the Belimo actuator so that they can bepassed on to the KNX/EIB system via the UK24EIB module.

Installation and wiringThe module is suitable for mounting on a 35mm-rail according to EN 60715. Wiring is performed by means of push-screw terminals.

Commissioning and parametrising the UK24EIB module and actuatorsFor commissioning purposes an application program suitable for the particular use must be downloaded to the module (via KNX/EIB/ETS). The actuatorsand sensors being used can be defined by means of ETS (KNX/EIB Tool Software). The actuators can be parametrised by means of a Belimo PC-Tool or anMFT-H hand-held parameter assignment device. There is a 3-pole plug on the front of the UK24EIB for this purpose.

Installation notesEnsure that proper strain relief is provided for the connection lead. Do not power-uup until the whole system (UK24EIB module, actuators, power supply) hasall been fully connected!
