1PLATE METHOD ACTIVITY

Note:This activity may be used with the Dining with Diabetes sessions: “Carbohydrates & Sweeteners” (slide 6), “Fats & Sodium” (slide12), or “Vitamins, Minerals & Fiber” (slide 2).

Objectives:Participants will:

Length of Time Needed:10-15 minutes

Materials Needed:Inexpensive white paper platesMarkers or colored pencils

What to do:After introducing the concept of the Plate Method, pass outpaper plate and marker(s) to each participant. Ask them to divide their plate using a marker according to the Plate Methoddesign (draw a line down the middle of the plate, then divide onehalf into two equal portions). Ask them to draw pictures of their favorite foods that represent each section of the plate. An alternative is to have them label each section with the termsStarches”, “Meat”, and Vegetables.

Encourage participants to take their plate home to use as a guide for their own meals. It will help them with portion size and carbohydrate distribution in their own meals.

Secret X: The game is a tic-tac-toe board with the middle vertical three squares covered. There is a hidden X behind one of the covered squares. The contestant is given an X to place where he/she wants to. The contestant also has the chance to win two more X's by answering the correct Dining with Diabetes review questions. The contestant's goal is to get three X's in a row.

Materials: Poster with Tic Tac Toe Board with middle vertical three squares covered by flap, Xs that have been cut out of cardboard paper.

Shell Game: A ping pong ball is placed under one of four cups. The contestant gets up to four chances to guess the right cup. Chances are won by answering the DWD review questions correctly. If all four choices are correct, automatically contestants win.

Materials: Ping pong ball, four Styrofoam cups
