Welcome to the Jackson Hole News&Guide’s 29th annual Home, Building and Recre-ation Show.

As anyone who has paid any attention to current events knows, it has been a tough couple of years for everyone — especially for homeowners and for those in the home, building and remodeling businesses.

It’s no coincidence that many vendors and pre-senters at this year’s Home, Building and Recreation Show are focusing on cost-effective ways to improve your home or garden. The good news for consumers is everyone is hungry for business, itching to work and ready to sit down and help clients. So don’t be afraid to think big and to ask questions.

Want to spruce up your home but don’t want to drop a mint’s

worth of money? And go green while you’re at it?

In the Tips and Trends profiles in Teton Home and Living magazine — bound with this issue — three Jackson vendors at the Home, Building and Recre-ation Show share their ideas on just how far a $1,000 expenditure can go, along with what’s new and envi-ronmentally friendly in their specific industries.

Although concrete may not be the first thing you would think of to upgrade, Dave Daniel and Clint Isaacson of Advanced Con-crete Solutions in Jackson make a convincing argu-ment that a $1,000 in-vestment in a concrete countertop, built-in sink or 6-square-foot coffee ta-ble is just the ticket. If you only want to spend a grand, go with lighting, says Andy Romo, light-ing specialist at Jackson Moore Lighting in Jack-son. You can create new and interesting touches to any room of the house by installing lighting, finding the perfect new fixture or adding a floor lamp or two. Also, now is the time to make the switch to light-emitting diode (LED) light-bulbs (see TH&L pages 8

Home-makeover shows on TV nearly always focus on changing the colors of walls and/or ceilings

— and for good reason, says Paul Wise, manag-er at Jackson Paint and Glass. You can do an en-tire average-size home for $1,000 if you DIY.

Low volatile organic com-pound (VOC) paints are the only way to go. Their great coverage means you use less overall (see TH&L pages 10 & 11).
