Please Pray for our sick

As Vicar General, I typically spend part of every Thursday in the Diocesan Office located across the street from The Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham. I meet with various Department heads and staff to assist in the operation of our Diocese and handle phone calls and respond to letters directed to our Bishop. In doing this, I’ve picked up on a few of the things that are near and

dear to our Bishop’s heart … things that he would very much like everyone in the Diocese to focus on in the year ahead (which will likely be Bishop Baker’s last year serving as Bishop of Birmingham). You may know that when a Bishop reaches the age of 75 … which

Bishop Baker will do in June next year … he automatically turns in

his resignation to the Pope. The Pope can either accept it or not, but here lately, the Pope has been accepting them and then appointing New Bishops to replace those retiring. So, we may well be awaiting a new Bishop at this time next year! Bishop Baker has a keen interest in nurturing our Baptismal calling to Missionary Discipleship. He has a deep concern for the full & faithful handing-on of the Catholic Faith so that all families will know the joy of the Gospel and carry that joy out to a world that desperately needs to see and experience it. Bishop Baker also wants to foster a deeper awareness of God’s call to

the Priesthood and Religious life … which would be greatly aided

by the endorsement and prayers of all parents ... opening the hearts and minds of their children to embrace that call. Another exciting element of Bishop’s final year with us is the presentation of the First Eucharistic Congress in the Diocese of Birmingham. What a renewing time this will be (June 28/29) when representatives from all over the Diocese gather at the BJCC to celebrate and thank the Eucharistic Jesus.

Safety and Security are two other key items that Bishop wants to

highlight and attain significant enhancement of for our Schools and

our Parish.

Please pray for our Bishop and for the success of all his plans and

programs that will surely enrich all our lives … both now and forever.

Love Father Deering
