PARISH MISSION STATEMENT HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH SAN FRANCISCO is a welcoming multicultural and liturgical community that celebrates our

of faithful discipleship and a generous stewardship way of life.

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora We have our Stewardship Retreat this week-end, with Fr. Dave Zimmerman as the speak-er. The theme of the Retreat is “To be a Christian Steward.” It will be facilitated by our Stewardship Council members, led by the

council’s chair Bruce McKie. May we continue and learn the Stewardship Way of Life. Congratulations to those celebrating their wedding anniver-saries this month, especially to those who have been married for a good number of years. Oscar and Priscilla Lumba celebrat-ed their 45th wedding anniversary last week. Not too long ago, Florante and Ofelia Chan celebrated their 40th wedding anniver-sary. Tante and Ofelia are with our regular Saturday morning environment group. As early as 6AM, they are already at work doing their ministry sweeping the areas surrounding of the church and rectory, making sure they are clean for the week-end. They have shown us how to walk the Stewardship Life. Congratulations and thank you. June has always been the most popular month for wedding. More so, it is famous for “June Brides.” The tradition of “June Brides” goes back to the Roman times when they celebrated the festival of the deity Juno and his wife Jupiter, who was the god-dess of marriage and childbirth, on the first day of June. It was thought that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness. For those who truly love, any month will do. Married when the year is new, he’ll be loving, kind and true. When February birds do mate, you wed not dread your fate. If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you’ll know. Marry in April when you can, joy for Maiden and for Man. Marry in the month of May, and you’ll surely rue the day. Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you’ll go. Those who in July do wed, must labor for their daily bread. Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see. Marry in September’s shrine, your living will be rich and fine. If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry. If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember. When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last. -Anonymous Father McZeemora was scheduled to perform a “June Bride” wedding. Since he thought it was a special wedding cere-mony, he wanted to have it within the Sunday morning mass just right after the homily and before the entire congregation. But for the life of him, he could not remember the names of the two parishioners whom he was to marry. He got around his di-lemma this way: “Will those who want to get married now, please come stand before me?” At once, six single ladies, four widows, and five single men stood, went to the aisle and walked to the front. Marriage is a beautiful vocation. If you can endure it, you can enjoy it. It’s officially Summer time. Let’s enjoy it too!

TWELTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 25, 2017

First Reading Jeremiah 20:10-13 Jeremiah expresses confidence that the Lord will protect him. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 69:8-10,14,17,33-35 God responds to the prayers of those in need. Second Reading Romans 5:12-15 Sin came into the world through one person; so salvation came through one person for many. Gospel Reading Matthew 10:26-33 Jesus assures the Twelve that God cares about them.

Background on the Gospel Reading We read today’s Gospel in the context of last week’s Gospel in which Jesus sent the twelve disciples to proclaim the kingdom of heaven. In between last week’s reading and today’s reading, Jesus has predicted that the disciples will face difficulties in their mission. Many people will not receive them well, even within the land of Israel. Even family members will turn away from the disciples because of the disciples’ commitment to Je-sus and the kingdom. Today’s Gospel offers the disciples con-solation against this difficult truth. This section of Matthew’s Gospel should be read in the context of Matthew’s intended audience, a Jewish-Christian community. The Gospel alludes to the dangers and persecutions that this community has most likely already faced and will con-tinue to face. To reassure this community, Matthew recalls for them the encouraging words of Jesus that we read today. In this Gospel passage, Jesus might be understood as putting suffering in perspective. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to keep their focus on God. Those who can harm the body do not have ultimate power; God does. Still persecu-tion and suffering can not be avoided or prevented. But Jesus reassures his disciples that God knows and cares about what happens to his children. We might not face the same type of persecution, but we do experience difficulties as we endeavor to live a Christian life. Sometimes we let the opinions of others prevent us from doing what we know to be right. We need the reminder that what God thinks about us is more important. We are reassured by the promise that God cares for us and protects us.
