A Pledge to Parish Life My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be.

Celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany of Christ, Light of the Nations

Disappearing Catholics WE CELEBERATE TODAY THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE with Veronica Mulwee, received in our parish today as a Catechumen of the Catholic Church. Over the past few months Veronica has been inquiring about our Church and today she takes the step of more formally and publicly declaring that she wants to be baptized and fully initiated into the Church.

As a Catechumen Veronica only has two “jobs”. First, we ask and encourage her to be present among us. Everyone of us by our way of life and with what we already know have a role to play in sponsoring the growth and development of her faith. Second, we need and want her to ask questions. This makes Veronica something of a “dangerous” person. She’s new, so she’ll be asking questions that may call us to remember who we really are and what we truly believe. She’ll learn that we’re not perfect Christians or Catholics, and her questions will call and challenge us to be more like Christ.

When we’re at our best others can know – just by being around us – that they are made in the image and likeness of God, and that in their grief and pain, their joy and hope, they are not alone.

Veronica is making an important and serious choice in her life, while at the same time she’s inviting us to renew our own commitment to the Church— for ourselves but also for her sake. I once had a Catechumen go missing for six months. When she returned I asked her why she had stayed away. Her response surprised me. She said she didn’t see many smiling people in our Church. She asked, “Where’s the joy in your Church?”

BECOMING A CATHOLIC IS A LIFE-LONG PROCESS. It’s a way of living in the world more than simply a way of identifying ourselves to others. Some days we’re good at being Catholic, some days we’re off. At times we’re actively engaged, but most of us also know the tendency to marginal involvement. We can celebrate well together when we want or need such moments. We may criticize unconstructively out of our angers or fears or ignorance. We know how to respond to the crises that surprise us and the challenges that come with the next steps we envision for ourselves.

When we’re at our best others can know – just by being around us – that they are made in the image and likeness of God, and that in their grief and pain, their joy and hope, they are not alone.

I’ve learned that there are two things at the heart of the process of becoming Catholic: Asking questions? Sharing insights! A true Catholic way of life – for children, for unbaptized persons or any Christian searching for Christ, for life-long members – is characterized by our willingness and our ability for these things.

Questions promote the joy of learning and discovery. Though we may tend to resist them for the change they invite us to consider – sooner or later. Insights generate the hope of finding our way through difficulty or darkness, especially when shared with each other. Listening (obedience) to each other, listening to God, may not be our human tendency, but it is much easier, even enjoyable, when we’re more sure of each other’s love and of God’s love.

Catholics are disappearing all the time for the lack of openness to real life questions and for failure to find a place for insights to thrive.

Health Advisory

Your commitment to Mass is a sign of the vitality of our parish. However, for the health of our whole community, if you are not feeling well, be attentive to these recommendations:

Don’t Come To Church …

With a fever—be fever free for 24 hrs. When you’re not feeling well— achy, tired, sore throat, no energy When you’re coughing and sneezing a

lot with a runny nose or headache

When You Do Come To Church …

Use hand sanitizer at church entrances With slight symptoms of cold or flu — Don’t take communion from the cup Offer the sign of peace with a

friendly wave or simple bow

Thank you for your cooperation in taking responsibility for the health of our community. Remember, it’s sad to miss Mass when you’re sick or taking care of someone who’s sick, but not sinful.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6).

Psalm — Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72).

Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6).

Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Jn 3:22 — 4:6; Ps 2:7bc-8, 10-12a; Mt 4:12-17, 23-25 Tuesday: 1 Jn 4:7-10; Ps 72:1-4, 7-8; Mk 6:34-44 Wednesday: 1 Jn 4:11-18; Ps 72:1-2, 10, 12-13; Mk 6:45-52 Thursday: 1 Jn 4:19 — 5:4; Ps 72:1-2, 14, 15bc, 17; Lk 4:14-22a Friday: 1 Jn 5:5-13; Ps 147:12-15, 19-20; Lk 5:12-16 Saturday: 1 Jn 5:14-21; Ps 149:1-6a, 9b; Jn 3:22- 30 Sunday: Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29:1-4, 3, 9-10; Acts 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

THE LIGHT OF FAITH The first reading today is charged with the glory of the Lord. Everyone who can come to the holy city does come—whole caravans of people of all ages on foot and on dromedaries and camels. This description of an irresistible light‑filled city prepares us for the story of the magi. They are guided by their own lights—their study of astronomy and astrology—and by the light of a peculiar star. Their study tells them that an unusual event in the heavens is a sign of an extraordinary birth on earth. They mean to find out about this, and they set out with gifts worthy of a king. They are welcomed into an insignificant house in Bethlehem, offer gifts befitting a king, and receive the gift of faith. Paul reinforces the great gift of faith available to the Gentiles, whom the magi represent. What they have seen has changed them, just as it changed Paul and all who heeded his proclamation. Like the magi and like Paul, we are invited to receive this life that is filled with the light of faith.

WE DID IT! With the help of our parishioners, several organizations and our students and staff, our Christ Light of the Nations Community has collected over 400 boxes of ce-real and almost $400.00! This is well over our goal of 50 cases (600 boxes) of cereal!. There were many parishioners, staff and students who brought in cereal multiple times. It was wonderful to see the children’s smiles as they proudly brought in their boxes of cereal. A special congratulations to the 5th grade. Their class of 22 brought in 56 boxes of cereal or just short of 5 cases! The cereal and money will be divided between the “Helping Hands Food Pantry” and the St. Vincent De-Paul Pantry from Holy Name of Jesus! We prayed today that all of the people who would be receiving our cereal would be blessed and know that we care! We thank Mr. Greg Brooks, our custodian/maintenance official, for this wonderful idea which helped all of us to demonstrate our theme: TOGETHER WE DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

DID YOU KNOW? Mass is held every Tuesday 10am at the Missouri V.A. Nursing Home chapel. It is located on 10600 Lewis & Clark (the first light south of Christian Hospital, on Hwy 367). As we approach Veteran’s Day, join us weekly as we celebrate Mass with those who know what it means to serve.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Life hands us many epiphanies or “wake‑up calls.” A few years ago, a young couple adopted a two-year-old child in a morass of red tape, complications, and court hearings. At the baby’s baptism, the priest suggested appending an “adoption blessing,” wherein the new relationship was ex-pressed and affirmed. There is a place in that rite for the child to speak, and instead the priest said, “Can you give Daddy a kiss?” Standing in the midst of his church, the young adoptive father suddenly welled up with tears as he embraced the child. Afterward, he explained that through all the hassles and legal struggles he never until that moment in church under-stood that he was the parent of this child. The ritual claimed them for each other, gave expression to their relationship that the legal documents never could, and firmly cemented this child into the heart of a community as everyone erupted into heartfelt applause. This assembly witnessed in a powerful way what happens in every baptism: the mystery of adoption, the free flow of grace, the overwhelming sense of God’s presence at the heart of our life’s journey.

Thank You!

A tremendous thank you to all the ladies and gentle-man of the Marthas’ for their dedication this past month with the many funeral luncheons that was served. This is a very busy time of the year for everyone, and they volunteered to take time to prepare and serve the luncheons! The families of the deceased were very grateful for their unselfishness!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEARNEW YEARNEW YEAR

It’s that time once again that every-one makes a New Year resolution. The ranges of what people resolve to do bet-ter, not at all or even begin is unbeliev-able. One resolution that is always popu-lar is, “exercise more”, “get in better shape”, “lose 20 pounds”. And the com-panies that make exercise equipment to advantage of peoples desperation. Janu-ary 1st, consumer ads are flooding with sales on exercise equipment, exercise DVD’s and even cookbooks and other items that help us keep our resolutions. What if exercise was a habit? Then your new years resolution could be some-thing that someone else may benefit from and not something you do for 2 weeks, 4 at the most and then give up on. What if exercise was a habit? Then you would be healthier and probably only need to lose 5 pounds of holiday eating instead of a years worth of weight gain. Making Exercise a Habit…….. 1. Know that exercise helps to de-1. EIGHTH GRADERS HELP DISTRIBUTE FOOD AND GIFTS The eighth graders were invited again to help with the gift distribution at St. Vincent DePaul Parish in the city. Each year, the parish distributes hundreds of gifts to the needy in the area including many senior citizens who live in senior apartments nearby. We delivered a wrapped gift along with a bag of groceries, a frozen chicken and a bag of fruit. Students went in groups of 5-7 with a teacher or parent and caroled their way through the halls bringing cheer to the residents. It was so nice to see the decorations they had hung out-side in their hall-ways. We were able to add a bit of Christmas to their day. When we returned to the parish hall, we helped them organize the donated food and toiletries for the families who would come the next day.
