THE BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST For hundreds of years, the Church has celebrated the Birth of John the Baptist as a Solemnity on June 24th. The date is calculated by Christmas, Dec. 25th. Jesus being born on Dec. 25th, then Mary conceived Him at the arrival of the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, 9 months earlier, on March 25th. St. Luke tells us that March 25th was ``in the sixth month'' of Elizabeth's pregnancy. Let us examine different aspects of John's Birth: 1. God intervened in history God had planned the Birth of His Son in

human history. In order for God to realize His plans, many other people were drawn into His plan. Of course, Mary was conceived without sin in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. Joseph, of the House of David, was drawn into the plan. And since Jesus needed a ``Precursor'', Zachariah and Elizabeth were drawn into the plan so that John could be born.

2. Miracles and Faith John's Birth and Jesus' Birth have many parallels. Both

are miraculous - Jesus of a virgin, and John of a woman past child-bearing age. Mary geeets the announcement with complete faith. Zachariah doubts, but because both he and Elizabeth are holy, God realizes His plan nevertheless. When Zachariah sees that God is truthful, he believes.

3. Immaculate conception, immaculate birth Jesus, of course, had no sin - He is God-made-man. In

order for Mary to conceive Him in her immaculate womb, God intervened at her conception and kept her also immaculate from the beginning of her life. But there is an interesting detail about John. Gabriel told Zachariah that John would be ``filled with the Holy Spirit

even from his mother's womb''. This announcement was fulfilled in Elizabeth's sixth month, when Mary arrived and greeted her, and at that time the baby in her womb, John, was filled with the Holy Spirit and washed clean of sin.

4. Prophetic Birth When John is born, Zachariah obeys God and gives

him the name that God chose. Then Zachariah sings a song, called the Benedictus from the first word in Latin. Zachariah, inspired by the Holy Spirit, prophesies that John will ``be the Prophet of the Most High, and you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways''. 5. Precursor - Forerunner The word that is used for John is the Precursor, or the Forerunner: He runs before the Messiah announcing His arrival, preparing the people to welcome Jesus. This is a unique role: no one else in history was chosen to do

this. And so John has a unique place in salvation history.

6. Renouncing the world As Jesus' Forerunner, John lives an extremely ascetic

life - desert and fasting. His lifestyle is prophetic - the One Who is coming is greater than this world.

7. Prophetic in birth, prophetic in death Today's celebration is joyful - it is John's birth. But, like

Jesus, John will suffer a martyrdom, because he spoke the truth!

8. The close of the Old Testament Jesus Himself will say that no one born before Him was

greater than John the Baptist, but with his death, John closes Old Testament prophecy. With Jesus, the New Covenant arrives!
