Page 3: Holy Family · 8/11/2015  · WILL RESUME IN SEPTEMBER Holy Family Parish 2400 S. Franklin St. Rd. Decatur, IL 62521 (217) 423-6223 . DEAR HOLY FAMILY PARISHIONERS: This Thursday,

DEAR HOLY FAMILY PARISHIONERS: This Thursday, August 15th, is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. Mary was assumed body & soul into heaven. This tenet of our faith was proclaimed as dogma (a belief that must be believed as Catholics) in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. It had been believed for centuries, but never codified, or en-tered as an article of faith as dogma. For the last 69 years we have celebrated the Assumption as an article of faith that we must believe as Catholics. It has been honored with its own Holy Day. In the United States we have six Holy Days on the books—-Christmas (Dec. 25th), All Saints (Nov. 1st), Assumption of Mary (Aug. 15th), Immaculate Conception of Mary (Dec. 8th), Mother of God (Jan. 1st), & the Ascension (moved in most dioceses to the 7th Sunday of Easter). But, some dioceses still celebrate the As-cension 40 days after Easter on a Thursday. Holy Days are meant to call our attention to some great event or happening in our Catholic faith. These Days are meant to inspire us, move us, help us to praise God evermore. We are OBLIGATED as Catholics to celebrate Mass on these Holy Days. They are Solemnities, the highest form of liturgical celebration in our liturgical calendar. They have the same “weight” as a weekend Mass, which is al-ways a Solemnity. Masses to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven at Holy Family will be: 7:00 a.m. & 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, August 15th. Please make sure you are able to attend & give praise to God for this wonderful Holy Day, & to ask the Blessed Virgin to intercede for you to her loving Son, Jesus Christ. _______________________________ Don’t forget to pray for our 3rd graders as they prepare for 1st Communion & Confirmation, & for our 8th graders seeking Confirmation. Bishop Paprocki will be here on Oct. 27th for these sacraments. This will we the first celebration for us with having the Restored Order of Sacraments—-3rd graders receiving both 1st Communion & Confirmation in the same ceremony. Our diocese has adopted this as policy for all young people, coming from the Diocesan Synod held several years ago. YOUR PASTOR, FATHER JOE

ALMIGHTY GOD, GIVER OF ALL LIFE, WE BEG YOU TO CHANGE THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF MANY OF OUR STATE AND NATIONAL LEADERS WHO PROMOTE THE SIN AND EVIL OF ABORTION. HELP US, AS CATHO-LIC CHRISTIANS, TO PROMOTE LIFE IN THE WOMB AND OUTSIDE THE WOMB.
