Week 6: Be courteous and considerate to others

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

We are well into Term One and our students have settled extremely well and there are many wonderful

things happening to support our students. Learning support programs have started across K-6 targeting

literacy and numeracy and our Aboriginal students are engaging in programs focusing on key into

comprehension strategies in literacy and numeracy. Year 3 and 4 this term will be working with a speech

pathologist supporting students who need extra help to develop their vocabulary. The school employs a

Family Support Coordinator to work with students on programs to develop social skills with a focus on

collaborative problem solving strategies that are play based. We have also recently purchased many new

reading books and hands-on math resources to support our students learning, creativity and problem solving

skills.

We are currently making improvements on our school grounds. Our ANZAC area is nearly finished with new

planting, edging and grass area. Our next project will be landscaping the back playground near the oval,

with seating and shading for students. We also aim to improve the front entrance at Huon Avenue.

EARLY MORNING ARRIVALS

We would like to request that children are not dropped at school prior to the 8.35am bell and that they are

not playing on school grounds after 2.55 pm.

As a staff we aim to keep your children safe at all times. However, there is no teacher on duty prior to

8.35am. If you know you will need to leave your children at school early or will be late in the afternoons, we

have a wonderful BASC facility onsite. Please make use of this very valuable resource. If this is not possible

please arrange for friends or family to care for the children.

Positive Behaviour For Learning (PBL)

A reminder our PBL signs have been put in specific places in the school to remind students of the school's

expectations. The signs also clarify the meaning of safety, learning and respect in those particular places.

Parents are able to talk with their children about what the signs mean and give examples about them to the

younger ones who don’t understand. They have been a great addition to the school and a really good instant

reminder for all students.

Have a wonderful week,

Tammy Deiri

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Kindergarten students are getting into the swing of ‘big school’ life. They are learning all about our school

rules and how these rules are applied in every area of our school. In Week 4 we started library and each

student has borrowed a book ready to return weekly on Thursdays. Play pals started in Week 5. We have

been lucky with the warm weather and the water play has been out daily. This week we have started our

Gross Motor Program. Everyone is enjoying being outside and working on our big muscles. Next week we

will introduce our Munch and Crunch (fruit break) at 10am and also stay at school til 2.55pm just like all the

other big kids. We all love being at ‘big school’.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

On Friday 1 March, our students participated in Clean Up Australia Day to remove rubbish from our

environment. Students showed great enthusiasm in cleaning up the school and positively contributed to

making our school a safer, healthier and cleaner place to be.

.

Visit the link below for more information.

HOMEWORK

Homework is often revision of what was covered in class. As well as regular weekly homework, your child may have assessments such as assignments or projects with due dates. A key to success is being organised.

Students in Years 3 to 6 work more independently. A lot of homework will be in English, mathematics, history and geography. However, it can be set from all areas of the curriculum.

HOMEWORK TIPS

These tips are relevant for all students Kindergarten to Year 12.

Ask your child about their homework, know what they are learning about and when assignments are due.

Use our term assessment planner to record when assignments are due, and exams scheduled. This will help your child prepare in advance. Make ‘to-do’ lists to spread out the workload.

Get into a routine of doing homework at a set time, ideally a little each day. Have a set place where children can do their homework, with the equipment they’ll need – pens and

pencils, highlighters, scissors, glue, scrap paper, ruler, calculator, printing paper, computer and internet access, a printer.

If there’s no set homework, encourage your child to do some reading. For younger children, it’s great for them to read aloud to you. For older ones, ask them to tell you about what they have read. For more help with reading and comprehension, read our English tips page.

Don’t jump in and give answers, homework is about helping children become independent learners. Encourage your child to start assignments as soon as they receive them – this will reduce any night-

before stress. Your child needs to do their own projects and assignments. There’s no point submitting work done by

anyone other than the student. Teachers need to know what students can do independently – it’s the best way for planning lessons and additional support, if required.

Turn off TVs, mobiles and other devices so there are no disruptions. If your child is having difficulty with their homework, contact their class teacher for help. For help understanding terms used in English, visit English A to Z. For help understanding terms used in mathematics, visit Maths A to Z.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE

Friday 15 March marks the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. It is a day for schools, students and the community to say Bullying. No Way! In addition to our regular Positive Behaviour for Learning lessons and Social Skills program, students in K-6 will participate in a range of classroom activities to learn about bullying — what it is, why it happens and what to do about it. Special assemblies will be held on Friday 15 March in the School Hall to reinforce school values related to respect and inclusion and communicate to students that bullying is never okay. Assembly Times: K-2: 10am – 10.55am 3-6: 2.00pm – 2.55pm

OPENING SCHOOL PARLIAMENT

On Wednesday 6 March 2019 the opening of the School Parliament took place in the school hall. Special

guests from Holsworthy High School and the wider community attended the ceremony where our

parliament ministers, officials and class representatives were inducted. School parliament sessions will

run fortnightly throughout the year and give students an important and meaningful voice in the school.

Year 6 Selective High Schools Test

The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 14 March 2019 from 9.00am to

1.30pm. Test centre advice has been sent to the parents of all students participating in the test either via

email or by letter.

Unless parents have made special arrangements with the High Performing Students Team to attend an

individually allocated test centre candidates from this school have been sent to Moorebank High School.

Go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7

to find:

information about the test and should be read carefully.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is now open! The Challenge aims to

encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to

enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge

to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Kinder, Year 1 and

Year 2 students complete the challenge as a class. Year 3 to Year 6 students

complete the challenge by logging a Personal Reading Log of 20 PRC books on the

PRC website. Students have until August 30 (Week 6, Term 3) to complete the

challenge.
