Leadership CommentsSimon Walter

In my role as UK Operations Manager, my main responsibilities are to develop the infrastructure and processes of the business to underpin and support the strong projected growth. I also look after the materials and logistics for aftermarket, the customer support team, remanufacturing, warehouse and distribution.

In my short time with Cummins Turbo Technologies, I have been impressed by the dedication and high degree of customer focus I have witnessed across departments. I am confident that with the great individuals and teams working with and within Cummins Turbo Technologies, we shall continue to fulfil the real challenges that have arisen from the continued high growth in demand for Holset products.

Operating in such a dynamic business environment requires us to adapt how we manage all aspects of our operations to maintain focus in delivering good customer service and responsiveness in such an environment. I believe that a major contributor to our success will be our ability to work closely with our distributors to ensure we communicate effectively and improve our ability to meet expectations.

My role is still very new and I am enjoying the challenges of managing the growth and development of the aftermarket as it brings exposure to a broad variety of aspects and facets of the business.

Prior to joining Cummins Turbo Technologies, I worked in a variety of industries within the areas of manufacturing, industrial engineering and service/aftermarket. I also spent ten years working outside the UK in France and the USA and hope to bring some of the knowledge I gained working in these industries and indeed the other countries, to Cummins Turbo Technologies.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all in the near future.

Simon WalterUK Operations Manager, Aftermarket

In March this year, I joined Cummins Turbo Technologies as the new UK Operations Manager, Aftermarket. Gary Waterhouse, who held the position for over two years has taken up a new role in Worldwide Manufacturing.

Holset Turbochargers Around the WorldHere are three examples of Holset turbochargers in action. Together these diverse applications help to demonstrate the adaptability, power and green credentials of our turbochargers.

Frankie Truck Racing Team

Cummins Turbo Technologies has designed and manufactured Holset turbochargers for the Frankie Truck Racing Team’s Renault vehicles, which are competing in the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) European Truck Racing Championships 2007.

After analysing the engine data from Renault Trucks to establish the correct specification of turbocharger, engineers from Cummins Turbo Technologies recommended the Holset HE551 turbocharger. The engineering team also optimised the gauging dimensions for the turbocharger’s compressor cover, whilst the Aerodynamics department at Cummins Turbo Technologies has worked closely with Renault engineers in the design of the air inlet on the truck.

As we go to press, the Frankie Truck Racing Team are celebrating their best results in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship so far, qualifying them to win first prize in the Team’s Championship.

Olympic Buses

The public transport system for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will feature buses powered by Holset HX35W turbochargers manufactured by Cummins Turbo Technologies in Huddersfield.

Beijing Public Transport Holdings has ordered 250 Cummins Westport B Gas Plus engines for the Beijing Jinghua Coach Company buses from Cummins Westport Inc, a leading provider of high performance alternative fuel engines for the global market.

Rated at 230bhp and running on clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG), these buses will be in addition to the current fleet of CNG powered buses providing environmentally friendly transport for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Powerboat Record Attempt

Earthrace is a bid to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat. It will also be the first time in history that an official Union International Motonautique (UIM) Powerboat record will be attempted using only renewable fuel.

During an 18 month tour, set to begin in March 2008, the boat will visit 60 of the world’s major cities to raise awareness about the sustainable use of resources and promote greener fuels such as biodiesel.

Earthrace is the highest profile powerboat in the world and is powered by two Cummins Mercruiser Diesel engines with two Holset HX55W turbochargers made at Cummins Turbo Technologies in Charleston, USA. Running on biodiesel, it is a showcase of environmentally friendly technologies such as low-emission engines, with a non-toxic anti-foul and efficient hull design.

Circumnavigating the globe is the pinnacle of powerboat challenges and at 24,000 nautical miles, is also the world’s longest race. The current record of 75 days was set by British boat ‘Cable & Wireless’ in 1998. Earthrace aims to smash this record by completing the voyage in less than 65 days.

Part of this review involved requesting distributor feedback through a questionnaire, so thank you to all who contributed; we have taken your ideas and suggestions on board and incorporated them into the database.

As a result, we are pleased to announce the launch of the following new functionality:

1. What’s New:

This is a completely new section; it enables the user to see at a glance, what has been added since the last update. It will break down information into categories including new product updates, supersessions and literature.

2. Catalogue Section:

A ‘Show Retrofits’ button has been added to aid searches for Holset retrofit products. If a turbocharger is identified as obsolete, by clicking on the ‘Show Retrofits’ button, it will identify any possible retrofits for that turbocharger.

A ‘Speed Sensor Kits’ box has been added to the service data section of the database. This will detail the part number of any applicable speed sensor kit.

A notes section has been added to the catalogue screen to help raise awareness of product information. This is shown by the ‘i’ icon in the far right column. These notes will have various themes and will be added at each update. The first addition highlights turbochargers that have equivalent machined from solid (MFS) compressor wheel alternatives to offer customers who may be experiencing cast compressor wheel failures.

A detailed review of both turbocharger and engine data has been conducted and more information relating to application, engine size and performance rating has been added to the database. This is an ongoing process and this data will be continually populated to the database.

3. Where Used:

Feedback from distributors highlighted the need for additional search categories, so there are now two additional search boxes for part numbers to allow you to narrow down your search further and identify the turbocharger required more easily.

4. Literature:

The literature section has been updated to give you access to all Service Repair manuals along with all recent editions of both Charging Ahead and HTi magazines.

To ensure you gain access to all of these new features, simply conduct an on-line update by clicking on the satellite icon at the top of the application. This will download all the new features direct to your computer.

Note: As there have been some major changes to the database, the updates may take some time. We suggest conducting the update at the end of the day, or other convenient time so it will cause minimal disruption. We have also updated our stock of CD Roms to reflect the changes. If you require additional CD Roms, please visit the Partner Zone at www.holsetaftermarket.com to place your order.

In an aim to keep you updated on the latest activity along with some hints and tips of how you can help in the fight, Cummins Turbo Technologies has launched a new webpage dedicated to counterfeit activity. To access the webpage, simply visit www.holsetaftermarket.com, click on the Partner Zone and enter your passwords. Once inside the Distributor site, click on ‘Counterfeit Update’ on the left menu bar to open up the dedicated page.

The webpage gives you the following information:

• Provides details of the latest raids or investigative action underway• Country mapping highlighting those areas believed to be at risk• Promotional material available to download

The webpage will be continually updated as developments take place. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see on this page, or any hints or tips you would like to share with other distributors, please email [email protected]

IndiaOver the past few months, Cummins Turbo Technologies instigated an undercover investigation into counterfeit Holset repair kits in the Indian market. The kits, branded as Autostar but with almost identical artwork to Holset repair kits, have been infiltrating the market, damaging the Holset brand reputation and driving down prices. In May, a series of raids commissioned by the Indian court, took place throughout Delhi and Mumbai. In total, nearly 100 kits were seized and destroyed. Through this type of action, Cummins Turbo Technologies is sending a clear message to the market place that no infringement of its branding will be tolerated.

New ZealandAction has been taken over the unauthorised use of the Holset turbochargers logo on websites and literature. We are pleased to announce that the unauthorised use of the Holset brand logo has now ceased.

WorldwideFurther action is currently underway in several key areas mainly focusing on parts of Asia and Europe, however to avoid compromising the investigations, we are unable to update you on progress until this is complete. For more information, please contact your account manager.

How can you help?

As our distributors, you are our eyes and ears to what is happening in our marketplace. If you see any evidence of counterfeit activity, or simply misuse of the Holset brand on websites and literature, please contact your account manager, so that action can be taken.

As you are aware, counterfeit activity is a growing problem for all of us. However, it is an area that Cummins Turbo Technologies will not tolerate and is taking steps to combat such activity in our aftermarket around the world.

The event was attended by mechanics and representatives from almost 70 garages, as well as the Power Care Clinic team and the Cummins Turbo Technologies Aftermarket team.

A joint presentation was given by Cummins Turbo Technologies and Power Care Clinic, which included important subjects such as the Aftermarket business plan for the availability of turbochargers along with failure diagnosis.

The mechanics meet gave Cummins Turbo Technologies and Power Care Clinic an opportunity to share philosophies and promote understanding of the market to the garage representatives.

One of the main themes of the mechanics meet was combating counterfeit activity and insisting on the use of genuine parts. Initially, many of the mechanics could not differentiate between counterfeit products and genuine parts and so the session aimed to teach them to identify packaging through the hologram and barcode features. Discussions also took place to inform the garage representatives of the dangers of using non-genuine parts.

The meet was a great success and was very well received by all who attended. The mechanics advised that this type of interactive session helped them to promote the Holset brand. It also encouraged them to combat counterfeit products by promoting the need for customers to undertake regular turbocharger and engine preventative maintenance using only genuine parts.

Authorised Holset distributor, Saudi Parts Center, was rewarded this summer for their generous donation to the charity auction at the EMEA Distributor Conference in The Netherlands earlier this year.

On 9 June 2007, Cummins Turbo Technologies joined forces with their Western Region Distributor; Power Care Clinic to organise a ‘Mechanics Meet’ in Ahmedabad, India.

Technical Training Saudi Arabia - Al-Khobar

Their prize was a technical training session led by Barry Haigh, Principle Service Leader, Cummins Turbo Technologies, which was held in Al-Khobar and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia from 18-20 June 2007.

This was an important event attended by around 50 people at each seminar who had travelled from all over Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The attendees included customers, dealers, technicians, fleet operators as well as government representatives.

The seminars covered many topics ranging from an overview of Cummins Turbo Technologies to the fundamentals of turbocharging, including wastegate and variable geometry

turbocharging. For the technically minded, there were also presentations on diagnosing a turbocharger failure.

An interesting discussion centred around the questions of durability and maintenance, which is a hot topic in an environment and climate as demanding as Saudi Arabia’s. Many delegates were keen to share their first hand experiences out in the field.

The seminars were also a great opportunity for Cummins Turbo Technologies and Saudi Parts Center to promote the benefits of the Holset product and emphasise their shared commitment to customer support in the Middle East.

AutopromotecItaly - Bologna

On 23-27 May 2007, Contec; authorised Holset distributor for Italy, participated in Autopromotec at the Bologna Exhibition centre.

The blood donation camp took place in Jaipur and was organised in association with Santokba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital and Medical Research Institute.

Local authorised Holset distributor, M/S Panjwani Diesels, also took part in the event. Anil Panjwani and his nephew, Mr Guarav generously gave a pint of blood each to the hospital.

Cummins Turbo Technologies provided breakfast refreshments and gifts for everyone who took part in the blood donation camp. The event was a success with over 71 units of blood being collected from volunteers.

Autopromotec celebrated it’s 22nd international exhibition of equipment and products for the transportation industry with a record number of both Italian and foreign visitors in attendance. Similarly, the number of exhibitors was at an all time high this year with over 1,400 companies attending. Contec exhibited the Holset brand, displaying a Holset HX35W and a HY55V using Holset VGT™ technology.

Visitors to the Bologna Exhibition Centre over the five day event totalled close to 100,000. This gave Contec an excellent opportunity to showcase the Holset brand and advise visitors on any technical queries.

The success of Autopromotec 2007 has been attributed to its high degree of specialisation. The event represents many sectors within the automotive industry, for example; car services, tyre specialists and engine overhaul are all showcased by exhibitors. Visitors from all over Italy as well as Spain, The Netherlands and UK were able to take part in conferences, international exhibition stands and activities.

Thanks to Autopromotec and its record number of visitors, Bologna has been crowned the capital of the automotive aftermarket, which is a great achievement for Italy’s automotive sector. Plans for Autopromotec 2009 are already underway and if trends continue, it is set to be even bigger than this years event.

Distributor in ProfileTurbo Supply

In this edition of Charging Ahead we would like to introduce you to Turbo Supply, our authorised Holset distributor in the USA, who this year, celebrate their 10th anniversary.

Turbo Supply was founded in 1997, by brothers Kyle and Kory Thiessen. Originally located in a rented building on historic Route 66 in Joplin, Missouri, Turbo Supply began with a small three person team. Due to the team’s dedication to business and their expanding worldwide customer base, in 2004 the company moved to a new 20,000sq ft/6,000m2 facility in the heart of the USA.

The new location provides better accessibility for local customers as well as those serviced across the nation. The workforce has also expanded to over 40 employees in order to fulfil Turbo Supply’s dedication to meeting customer expectations of on-time delivery. Modern equipment has replaced much of the older, original machinery with skilled machinists operating the latest CNC machines and experienced rebuild technicians assembling turbocharger products.

Advances in the quality control and quality assurance programmes have been in the forefront of Turbo Supply’s operation in recent years. “Customers appreciate the extra effort we take to ensure their satisfaction,” notes Kory Thiessen. Documentation is critical to any quality control programmes and Kory has implemented what he terms as the ‘Thumb Print’ method whereby every machinist and rebuild technician who

touches any part of the product, documents his or her work. This ensures that Turbo Supply continues to exceed their customers’ expectations by providing quality products every time.

Turbo Supply also provide a remanufacturing and repair service. Bearing housing re-bore, turbine shaft regrinding and seal plate repair are just a few of the remanufacturing techniques offered.

In addition to the remanufactured turbochargers, Turbo Supply, maintain one of the largest inventories of factory new and remanufactured products in the USA. From the beginning, Turbo Supply have noted the need for a well stocked inventory and the inventory levels of factory supplied product reflect that philosophy. From trucking, agriculture, industrial and natural gas compression, Turbo Supply has inventory coverage to meet the demands of its ever growing customer base.

Charging Ahead wishes Turbo Supply continued success over the next ten years and beyond!
