At Mountain View, 8 th grade Humanities is a two period class in which students are expected to show proficiency in both Language Arts and Social Studies content aligned to Oregon State Common Core Standards. This year, students will work to develop their skills both academically, and as citizens, in order to prepare themselves for high school and beyond.

Ms. Holman’s Expectations: Demonstrate respect—for each other, ourselves, the classroom, and the learning environment Come to class on time, prepared with all materials, and ready to learn Participate and engage in discussions Use class time efficiently Gestión del tiempo: use el tiempo fuera de la clase por varias razones tales como tareas, completar ensayos,

lecturas y realizar investigaciones

In all classes, we will complete a variety of short and long term projects which will require planning and mindful time management. A large portion of 8 th grade Language Arts is using technology to access information and incorporate that into our classrooms. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and results in a major referral for cheating; plagiarism is intellectual theft.

Grading Procedure: Grades are used to show proficiency on the state standards and progress toward a regular high school diploma. 80% of the grade is based on assessments (tests, projects, speeches, papers, etc.) at the end of a unit of teaching (summative). 20% of the grade is based on practice and inclass work that is directly related to the standards (formative).

Students have the option to retake a summative assessment if they do not earn at least 70% on the first attempt *Highest assessment score is the final grade for that assessment

No extra credit available Formative work will only be accepted within the unit of study. Late work may be subject to point deduction Summative retakes must be completed WITHIN 7 DAYS of receiving a grade. Teachers are only required to

allow one retake attempt. If extenuating circumstances arise that make completing or retaking difficult within the one week time frame,

THE STUDENT MUST talk with the instructor about this in a timely manner. The instructor will take absences into account with these deadlines. *School related absences do not apply*

It is Newberg School District’s philosophy to meet the needs of each student within the framework of the regular class setting. Teachers may make modifications to their instructional programs to meet the needs of academically talented, 504 plans, IEP plans, and English Language Learners. 8th grade Humanities’ goal is that ALL students have an opportunity to succeed.

Grading Scale: 90%100%: A (student has demonstrated a high level or proficiency or mastery of standards) 80%89%: B (student has demonstrated a slightly higher proficiency of standards) 70%79%: C (student has demonstrated that s/he is meeting standards) 60%69% D (student has demonstrated work below state standards) 59% and below: F (student has demonstrated work that fails to meet state standards)
