As I sit here, writing from the warmth of my bed in the wee hours of the morning, the only sound

I can hear is the furnace running and the quiet breath of the two little beasts beside me. The two who have trapped me inside the blankets like a cocoon with two arms just barely able to extend out far enough to type. This is my typical morning. This is also one of my favorite parts of the day. I may spend a fair amount of time being woken up by a dog on my head, a paw in

my face or used as some kind of human pillow wedge (and no, these are not the best parts of my day) but it’s mornings like these that make me love sharing my life with dogs. What I’m also reminded of is how lucky I am to wake up at 4 a.m. to write a letter about it as part of my job as the editor of this magazine. While I’m cuddling in bed (aka cocooning) with the pups, I’m also putting the finishing touches on one of my other favorites things and that is the holiday/new year issue. This particular issue includes the yearly gift guide which I hope you find useful. Each item I’ve included can be purchased in the area and I hope you find time to visit some of these amazing shop owners, who have dedicated themselves to pets in RI and who have also helped support this magazine. So please shop at these small local businesses as much as you can this year and tell them who sent you! Also inside this new issue, you will find some interesting articles such as “On The Run,” where you’ll learn how to get yourself out the door this winter with your dog in tow. Another story I encourage you to read is “The Bargain” on page 33. This one arrived in my mailbox a few months ago and when I finally opened it up to read, I was so incredibly moved by the beautiful connection between Sweetie and her dog dad David Gillespie, that I knew this had to be shared. New York May Become First State To Establish Animal Abuser RegistrySome lawmakers are trying to make it hard on people who make it hard on animals. New York’s senate has passed a bill that would require those convicted under Buster’s Law, the state’s animal cruelty act, to register with the criminal justice services division and ban them from owning pets. The proposal now goes to the state assembly, while Michigan and Texas weigh similar bills that would give shelters and others involved in animal sale and adoption access to a registry of abusers. In Michigan, there may not even be an administrative cost. An anonymous donor there has pledged up to $10,000 toward setting up the registry.

First Ever National Rally for Pit Bulls Planned in 2014 on Capitol HillIt’s always a struggle to adopt out any animal, but pit bull terriers and dogs that “look” like pit bulls have an especially difficult time. They’re often misunderstood because for far too long they have been labeled as “dangerous dogs,” which is simply dead wrong. Thankfully, there are movements now aimed at ending BSL and spreading greater awareness about the wonderful companions pit bulls can be.The newest addition to this movement is One Million Pibble March, headed by comedian Rebecca Corry and sponsored by her founda-tion, Stand Up for Pits. It will be the first ever national march for pit bulls and will feature a rally of supporters from across the country along with special guests and keynote speakers.One of the march’s recently announced special guests will be pit bull Elle, who won this year’s American Humane Hero Dog award.Corry tells OGP that the goal of the march is to serve as “the voice for millions of voiceless victims and by doing so inspire legislators to end BSL once and for all. We want to offer solutions to ending the dog fighting epidemic and by doing both of these things, create safe and humane communities for humans and pets.”The march is set to take place next year on May 3, 2014 on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., and all are welcome to attend (but please note: four-legged friends will need to stay home with a dog-sitter).

My Black Lab, Lucy, was impossible to tire out. As an avid runner who was

running out of ways to expel Lucy’s energy, I decided to take her out for a little jaunt. Wouldn’t you know that when we got home, she was nice and relaxed. Slowly, she worked up to being able to do four to five miles with me. Even when chilly tempera-tures would have otherwise kept me comfy and cozy inside, Lucy got me outside, and I was always glad she did. I was so excited by this concept, that I went on to help other people by starting a dog running service called Canine Cardio Company of Rhode Island with Lucy as my mascot!While you may not want to start your own dog running business, I hope the story above will inspire you to think about getting out for a run with

your dog. However, before putting those paws to the pavement, there are some tips you should know to make running with your dog the safe and enjoyable bonding experience it can be.

The Warm-Up Just like any human considering a new exercise program, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare professional before you begin. Your dog’s vet can answer any questions you may have about your particular dog. Age, breed and temperament should be taken into consideration. Short-nosed breeds such as Pugs and Boston Terriers are not suitable for prolonged exercise, especially in extreme heat or cold. However, I have two Boston Terriers that I walk and we mix in a few slow 20 foot jogs on our walks.

Larger breeds, such as Great Danes, are also not best suited for endurance running. That being said, most dogs can and will run. If your dog is still a pup, jumping into vigorous running right away may result in injury as it can take anywhere from nine to 16 months for your dog’s bones to fully develop. However, it is never too early to start laying the foundation for when your dog is ready to run longer distances.

The Weather Outside is…?With cold weather and snow coming you’ll want to make sure that your dog is protected from the elements and highly visible at all times.If you have a short-haired breed, a dog sweater or jacket will help your pup stay warm on a cold weather run. “Ruff Wear” are my go to brands for cold weather and high visibility gear.Once the snow flies, paw pad protection is vital. Paws are not as indestructible as we sometimes think. Snow, ice and ice melt chemicals can all be irritants to paw pads. If you are lucky enough to have a dog that actually enjoys wearing booties, that is great. In my experience, most dogs hate them and do whatever they can to get them off. As an alternative, I turn to a natural musher’s wax developed in Canada for sledding dogs called Musher’s Secret. It applies a protective barrier to the paw pad while also moisturiz-ing. It is non-toxic and won’t stain floors or carpeting.

Now I See YouAlong with the cold, limited daylight hours are also a con-cern. Sunrise is at 7am now that daylight savings is over, while it is fully dark by 5pm. Most people are out with their dogs at these times so it’s important for both runners to be safe and highly visible on busy roadways.Companies such as Saucony and Brooks produce excellent reflective night-time running gear. Stunt Puppy has reflective leashes and gear, such as its Go Dog Glo high visibility vest, which uses millions of glass beads to reflect light. Ruff Wear also sells LED lights that attach easily to many of their leashes, collars and jackets. I carry a small flashlight or wear a headlamp for evening runs.

Who’s Walking Whom?Creating a new canine running buddy starts even before you leave the house and well before you start running. Whether you’re the proud owner of a puppy or a newly adopted adult dog it’s imperative that you establish yourself as the pack leader. I do this by making a dog heel and stay until I exit the house. Your dog should be able to patiently wait for an “OK” command before exiting. As with all corrections, repetition is key so keep at it. Reward each desired behavior. This is very important as it shows your dog from the very start that you are in charge and not the other way around.We’ve all seen those poor souls being pulled here, there and everywhere by their dog, prompting the who’s walk-ing whom look from passersby. You don’t want this to

be you, especially on a run so proper leash etiquette during walks will make the eventual transition to running that much easier.I prefer to have a dog on my left side. That works for me. Once you pick a side, stick with it. Your dog will natu-rally tend to pull especially if they are still young. Zero tolerance for these behaviors and repetition are your best tactics here. When a dog tries to pull, I flat out stop. Eventually, your dog will put two and two together that pulling equals stopping. Ideally, you want your dog to be at your side or slightly behind you during a walk or run with about three feet of leash between you hanging in a U-shape. By staying out in front, you are again showing that you are the pack leader. You may also encounter a leash tug of war. I currently walk a five month old Australian Shepherd. While she is too young for prolonged jogging, we are learning how to run properly in baby steps, ten feet at a time. She has the tendency to grab the leash in her mouth and tug on it every time we get going. I stop immediately when she does this. She is already realizing that this behavior stops us in our tracks. I give praise when she lets go and then we walk some more before trying running again later in the walk.

Couch to 5K-K9: The Gradual Build Up from Walk to RunWhen your dog is properly leash trained it’s time to start running. Just like humans though we can’t just go out and run five miles without first building up to that distance. The same rule applies to dogs. Your dog’s age, breed and physical health factor into what distance you should start with.For example, let’s say you feel your adult dog can start with a mile run.

Most experts say that you should increase distance by no more than ten percent each week. If you are training for a 5K, bring your dog along as motiva-tion.

“Gearing” Up For Your RunBecause dogs can stop on a dime, it is important that your pup wears a non-slip collar such as a martingale collar, or at the very least have a collar tight enough that your dog won’t be able to slip during a run. Who Is Juno & Tell Us Why She’s So Special. Juno is a rescued pit bull and that in and of itself makes her special in my eyes. She is a shining example of the many pit bull type dogs who are sitting in shelters everywhere, just waiting for someone to give them a chance. I met Juno when I began volun-teering at Providence Animal Control. She had been at the shelter for many months and had developed crippling anxiety as a result of the confinement, a state that is often referred to as being “kennel crazy”. Her panic was so severe that she would just run in circles constantly jumping and pawing at the ken-nel to get out. No matter how much she ate, she was losing weight at an alarming pace and had become emaciated. The shelter had run out of options for her and asked if I would consider fostering her. I did, fell madly in love with her, and the rest is history.

Why Did Juno Want To Be On The Cover?I decided there would be no better use of a donation then to have a dog deemed “unadoptable” by many to grace the cover of Animal Print and show how much joy Juno has bought into my life just by being a part of it. I am hoping Juno’s story might inspire folks to check out the rescue group I volunteer with Hand-some Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs and find their own perfect match.

What Was The Photoshoot Like? The photo shoot was wonderful. Traer Scott is an amazing photographer and is an old friend of Juno’s from her days at the shelter so she was very happy to see her. Juno enjoyed all the attention and treats she was given for simply sitting and looking beautiful

For the last few years, The Animal Print, along with internationally recognized photographer Traer Scott have joined forces to offer a very unique donation to The Providence Animal Rescue League. ’Tis the season for family gatherings, gift giving and food galore. Veterinarians know this is also the season for canine pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), a painful, potentially life-threatening condition most commonly caused by overindulgence in foods that are particularly rich or fatty. And what kitchen isn’t overflowing with such foods this time of year?

What Is the Pancreas?The pancreas is a thin, boomerang-shaped, delicate-appearing organ that resides in the abdominal cavity, tucked up against the stomach and small intestine. Though the pancreas may be diminutive in appearance, its actions are mighty! It is the body’s source of insulin (necessary for controlling blood sugar levels) as well as digestive enzymes, which are necessary for proper absorption of nutrients. When pancreatitis is chronic or particularly severe, this little factory sometimes permanently closes down, resulting in diabetes mellitus and/or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, requiring insulin injections and digestive enzyme replacement therapy, respectively.

When a dog eats, enzymes are released from the pancreas into the small intestine where they are activated for food digestion. Sometimes, for reasons we do not fully understand, these enzymes are activated within the pancreas itself, resulting in the inflammation of pancreatitis. In addition to eating rich or fatty foods, other known causes of pancreatitis include hormonal imbalances, inherited defects in fat metabolism and some medications. For some affected dogs, an underlying cause is never found. Symptoms associated with pancreatitis are variable but may include vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and decreased activity and appetite.

How a Vet Diagnoses PancreatitisShort of performing a pancreatic biopsy (a surgical procedure), diagnosing pancreatitis can be challenging, because noninvasive tests are fraught with false-negative and false-positive results. Veterinarians must rely on a combination of the following:

• A history of dietary indiscretion, vomiting and lethargy. • Physical examination findings (particularly

abdominal pain). • Characteristic complete blood cell count (CBC) and blood

chemistry abnormalities. • A positive or elevated Spec cPL (canine pancreas-specific

lipase) blood test. • Characteristic abnormalities found on an abdominal

ultrasound.

Treatment of PancreatitisThere is no cure for pancreatitis — much like a bruise, the inflammation must resolve on its own. Treatment consists of hospitalization for the administration of intravenous fluids, antibiotics to prevent secondary infection or abscess formation, and injectable medications to control vomiting, pain and stomach acid secretion. Affected dogs should ideally be monitored around the clock for the life-threatening complications that sometimes accompany pancreatitis, such as kidney failure, heart rhythm abnormalities, respiratory distress and bleeding disorders. If your dog has pancreatitis, count on a minimum of two to three days of hospitalization and be sure to ask who will be caring for your dog during the night.

At-home treatment for pancreatitis typically involves feeding a low-fat or fat-free diet. This may be a life-long recommendation,

27particularly if your dog has been a repeat offender. Most dogs fully recover with appropriate therapy; however, some succumb to complications associated with pancreatitis.

Preventing PancreatitisWhen in doubt, check with your veterinarian before offering human food to your pet. This is especially true if your pet is on a special diet or has an existing medical condition.

If you feel you must give holiday foods, do so sparingly and only if well-tolerated by your dog’s gastrointestinal tract and waistline. Keep in mind that whether offered a teaspoon or a tablespoon of something delicious, most dogs will gulp it down in the same amount of time and reap the same psychological benefit. Don’t offer tidbits from the table while you are eating. This is a setup for bad behavior. Offer the treat only after you’ve left the table. Most importantly, if you shouldn’t be eating the food yourself (emphasis on shouldn’t), please don’t feed it to your dog! By all means, give your precious pup a bit of turkey breast but without the skin attached and unaccompanied by fat-laden sour cream mashed potatoes and gravy. Remember, most dogs are so darned excited about getting a treat, they don’t care what it is, only that they’re getting it!

29Congratulations to the staff of the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic (RICSNC) in Warwick who recently sterilized its 10,000th patient on January 31st. This milestone was reached just over 18 months after the clinic’s opening.

RICSNC opened its doors July 1, 2010 thanks to grant fund-ing from The Rhode Island Foundation. As a nonprofit, high-volume, high quality facility, the clinic offers subsidized spay/neuter services for cats and dogs. Two veterinarians perform up to 60 surgeries per day in a state-of-the-art facility, which offers free transportation within Rhode Island. Pamela Knoecklein, Clinic Director, says, “The clinic’s remarkable success is due to the highly skilled and dedicated staff that works together with great efficiency, while never compromising the excellent patient care they provide.”

Each year, more than 15,000 animals enter Rhode Island shel-ters and approximately 3,000 are euthanized. Taxpayer dollars must be spent to house and ultimately euthanize those animals in part because there are not enough homes for them all. Spay-ing and neutering is the only way to prevent the birth of unwanted animals, while saving the lives of those animals already in shelters. In addition, RICSNC currently partners with more than 70 shelters and rescue orga-

Beautiful, gentle “Circe” (and her sister “Greya”) were abandoned when their own-ers moved. Despite such heartless treatment, she is very friendly, and really enjoys having her neck scratched. Circe has an unusual face: a white stripe down her nose, her right side is orange, her left side is black.

Hank is an OLD English Bulldog, which is an attempt to re-breed the Bulldog into the sort of dog it was in olden days. Longer legs, a slightly longer head, a wider pelvis and the tail left un-docked are the primary differenc-es. Hank is an exceptionally fine example of this idea! He is a FRIENDLY, CALM dog who needs moderate exercise...

Beautiful, young, Willow (and her sister, Summer, who is still here, too) were aban-doned by their owner, and taken in by Ani-mal School. Monty is a rare breed dog – an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, rather than a Red or Blue (Long Tailed) Heeler. Like all Cattle Dogs, he has a big personality, and a strong work ethic. Pretty Girl is a long-haired white and black, 2 year old cat. She was abandoned by her owners and left to fend for herself in the woods. Luckily she was found and brought to the shelter. She likes to lay in peoples laps to be pet, and talks a lot!

Scuttle’s owners moved away and forgot him, or at least that is what he thought. Never be-ing outside before he sat quietly by the front door for days hoping that they would come back, he saw the moving truck left and his owners drive away, but he knew this must be a mistake.

When you visit the Providence Animal Shelter, you get a variety

of responses from the dogs. Most will get as close to you as possible, some rubbing right into their bars, some standing and reaching with their front legs, most barking with enthusiasm. Some woof in fear, a few even slip through their holes into the outside part of their cages, but few act the way my dog of fifteen years did. When I first saw the being who would become one of my best friends and companions, she just lay curled up in the corner of her cell.

Sometimes dogs seem to come with names, but no moniker would stick to this corgi-shepherd mix. We called her Sweetie because she was so enthusiastic (out of the pound) and loving toward us, but that title seemed more like a nickname. We tried many others: Otter because she flowed off couches and benches so gracefully; Simba because her fur was tawny, her paws big, and because she grunted like a lion when we looked into her face and spoke to her; Happy because her floppy ears would bounce up and down when she ran, her mouth breaking open into a wide grin; Harpo because she liked to carry a squeaky toy

in her mouth and make it honk. Only “Sweetie” fit, though, augmented through the years by added letters (Sweetness) or words (Sweet Girl), but remaining in the end just a simple description.

With Sweetie, I needed a leash only as protection against cars because she would not stray far from my side. When a little distance crept between us, she would look up and run to my area. I never had to train her. She would just come when I called, and whenever I said her name, she would look at me with great intensity, even though most of the time I was just saying hello. My wife joked that Sweetie would never allow death to take her from my side.

But death approached in Sweetie’s thir-teenth year in the form of dementia, sig-naled at first by her drifting further away during walks, by her not answering my call. We thought she was just losing her hearing, maybe her eyesight, but as the years passed she began walking in circles, especially in the house, and hooting in anxiety. She began to limp, and despite vitamins and glucosamine shots and pain pills and anxiety medication, Sweetie seemed to drift away with time, leaving a broken old dog that needed to be held up when she peed. Dementia stole our con-nection, that elusive bond best described by the word “love,” but more complex than any generality—a deep, moving dream river of both darkness and light.

Three days before her passing, Sweetie shifted into a worse state—pacing all night long, losing more strength in her back legs, even showing less interest in food (that terrible warning). It was time to ease her passing. So I called our Veterinarian and set up an appointment for a home visit since Sweetie was

terrified of riding in the car, especially on a trip to the Vet’s. That last day, I watched the clock and ticked off Sweetie’s remaining time, but a funny thing hap-pened: Sweetie slept peacefully most of the afternoon. She didn’t walk in a single circle, didn’t hoot once. For the last two hours, I took Sweetie to the backyard (with my other two dogs, Belle and Holly) and stayed with her. As the sun shown and the breezes played, she licked my hand repeatedly, and I stroked her thick fur, pulling out the pieces and little clumps because I wanted her to look her best and because I had been grooming her that way for over fifteen years. When the Vet and her assistant came and did their task, I put my face right into Sweetie’s, so close that I could see my head shape in her eyes, and I stayed that way for the whole procedure, as the sedative slowed her even more and as the darker drug eased her away. Sweetie was beautiful, and I told her that over and over.

A character from a PBS show (Lark Rise to Candleford) responds to the death of a neighbor’s child by telling her husband, “To love is to lay oneself open to loss, and that is the bargain we make with ourselves because it is worth it.” Early the next morning when I took my two remaining dogs to the backyard, I found tufts of Sweetie’s hair still strewn about. Most of the bird nests in the vicinity were softened by the double coating of her brown and white hair. I settled into one of our benches and sipped my coffee. Robins were hopping and bobbing in one corner of the lawn, sparrows landed con-tinuously to inspect and select Sweetie’s fur, automobiles rumbled in the distance, changing gears. Life flexing its limbs. On the bench I sat still, peaceful, enjoy-ing Belle’s and Holly’s ambling about as the sparrows carried Sweetie to the sky.
