When it comes to holidaytime, UK holiday parks, caravan and camp sites

are teeming with families looking tokick back and enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation. However there’s one group ofpeople that aren’t so interested inkeeping still and that’s children.Children love to play, especially onholiday – from exploring new placesand meeting new friends to lettingoff steam and trying somethingadventurous.

Holiday park managers know all too wellthat if children are enjoying themselvesand having fun, their parents and familieswill be happier and relaxed. Chances arethat they will spend more money as aresult. Savvy managers are investing inplay equipment and play spaces, bothoutdoors and indoors, with manymaximizing income by opening their playspaces to non–residents.

UK play companies are designing andinstalling play equipment and play spacesin holiday and leisure settings every day, from indoor soft play barns to outdoorplaygrounds. But how can holiday parkmanagers be sure that they are workingwith a reputable play company that isinstalling the best quality equipment andoperating to the highest standards? Wellthat’s easy – they can turn to aprofessional trade body they can trust.

The UK play industry is estimated to beworth £125 million and the voice of thatindustry is the Association of PlayIndustries (API) www.api-play.org.Founded in 1984, the API representsmanufacturers, installers, designers anddistributors of outdoor and indoor playequipment and safety surfacing. Itcampaigns at the highest levels forrecognition of the value of investment inactive play and champions the role ofactive play in combating child healthproblems like obesity.

API members abide by a strict Professional Code of Conductand operate to the highest standards. The API badge is aquality mark and there are clear advantages to choosing amember when specifying a play project. The API urges holidaypark buyers to ask their play supplier eight key questions toensure they select a reputable, experienced and financiallysecure contractor:

1. Can you provide details of similar projectscompleted in the last 12 months? Always ask for evidence of recent previouswork, case studies and references. Thisdemonstrates competence, commitment, credibility and reassurance that it is the righttype of company to deliver on your vision.

2. Can I see third party test certificates for theproducts you will be using on this project? This demonstrates compliance with BSEN1176 and other relevant safety standards.

3. Can I have 3 customer references for projectsyou have delivered recently? This will allow the buyer to talk to a thirdparty about the supplier’s service delivery.

4. What added value can you bring to thisproject? This will enable the buyer to evaluate if thereis something valuable that a supplier canprovide in addition to creating your new playspace, for example, carrying out astakeholder consultation.

5. Can you include costs for an independent post-installation inspection on completion? This will provide peace of mind by checking asite for flaws, fitting problems or safetyhazards prior to children using it. Rememberall play equipment requires regular inspectionand maintenance.

6. What can I do if something goes wrong and Iam dissatisfied with your performance? The API offers a free technical disputemediation service to all clients buying fromAPI member companies.

7. Can I see your annual certificate of APImembership? This is the best way to ensure that all of theabove issues are addressed. Companiesstating that they are 'Founder members of theAPI' are not necessarily current members.Ask to see their current membershipcertificate and double check online or call theAPI office directly for confirmation.

8. Have you been credit-checked?Always undertake a credit check on anypotential supplier and explore their tradinghistory. Remember that ratings change overtime. This is inexpensive and could save a lot

of inconvenience and cost by ensuring a supplier is financiallysound. The API monitors its members’ financial stability throughrigorous credit checking and regular financial performancemonitoring. Download the 2013 Directory of API Members at: http://www.api-play.org/api-welcome For further information about the API, its members and how it canhelp support your play project, contact: Deborah Holt, tel: 0247641 4999 ext. 208, email [email protected]

Empty-nesters wantingto downsize and buy adream holiday home, but who are groundedby the stagnant

property market, are now being offered an instant get-out plan.

It comes from major leisure group Park Holidays UK which can helpcouples part-exchange their house for a holiday lodge or caravan - witha guaranteed sum left to fund a new smaller home.

The scheme, believes the group, will help spell an end to the frustrationfelt by many who have had to put their downsizing dreams on hold inthe current slow-moving marketplace.

Now such property owners can choose a holiday home from one ofPark Holiday UK's 23 parks in Southern England with the certainty thattheir existing house will find a buyer.

The purchaser will be one of the UK's largest house buying companieswhich will use valuations from local estate agents to establish a pricewhich they will guarantee to pay.

The homeowners can then set about finding a new smaller permanenthouse in addition to their holiday home, sure in the knowledge that thesale is secure and will not fall through.

"Many couples tell us that they have found an ideal holiday home onone of our parks, but can't proceed until their property sells," said ParkHolidays UK director Tony Clish.

"Often their stories involve long frustrating months of unsuccessfulmarketing, even after the house has been reduced in price at leastonce.

"This scheme entirely removes estate agents from the frame, and doesaway with the need to show people around your home as well as the

hassle of negotiating on lower offers.

"Instead, a price is agreed and the completion date set for whateversuits the sellers best. They then take possession of two perfectproperties in exchange for one major headache!" said Mr Clish.

The price achieved for the home, he said, was typically around 90% ofestate agents' estimates.

However, added Mr Clish, such valuations are often considerably over-optimistic in order to win the instructions, and frequently bear littleresemblance to the finally agreed selling price.

Neither will sellers have to factor in thousands of pounds' worth ofestate agents' fees - and can also avoid conveyancing costs by usingthe legal services provided free by purchasing company.

The equity in many people's homes, says Mr Clish, allows amblelatitude for buying a caravan holiday home or lodge as well as a moresuitably sized bricks-and-mortar property.

At Park Holidays UK, brand new two and three bedroom holiday homesstart at under £20,000. They are also fully equipped and furnished, removing another potential major expense.

"Swapping a family house for a smaller home and a luxurious holidaybolt-hole on the coast can usher in a lifestyle that many people wouldenvy," said Mr Clish.

"With this scheme, it becomes an instant possibility - and means thatcouples will never again be rushing around with a vacuum and dusterevery time the estate agent calls!" he said.

More information about the guaranteed property sales programme isavailable on the company's website at www.ParkHolidaysUK.com - orcall 0843 178 7065.

The equivalent of a small woodland has been planted by central Englandpark owners in order to balance the books on carbon produced by their carswhen attending branch meetings.

More than 400 saplings are now flourishing on parks belonging to membersof the Heart of England branch of the British Holiday and Home ParksAssociation.

With each tree calculated to have a carbon offset value of around 255 miles, members are able to attend branch get-togethers knowing that theirjourneys have actually benefitted the environment.

Inspiration for the scheme came last year after green issues were on theagenda at one of the branch's quarterly meetings, explained branchchairman Denis Lloyd Jones:

"Many parks in the branch already hold the David Bellamy ConservationAward, and we all have taken measures to help protect the natural world inone way or another," he said.

"It seemed logical, therefore, to find a way to ensure that our travel tomeetings - and the journeys of our guest speakers - were not in any smallway undoing our members' good work.

"There was unanimous support for the idea of planting indigenous trees tocounter our cars' carbon emissions, and in under a year we have offsetmore than a hundred thousand miles.

"That is the equivalent of seven years' worth of branchmeetings!" said Mr Lloyd Jones, owner of Lickhill ManorCaravan Park in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire.

Lickhill Manor is the holder of a number of topenvironmental awards, and has been praised by David Bellamy for the manywildlife-friendly initiatives in its 55 acres of grounds.

The 423 trees planted under the scheme, said Mr Lloyd Jones, were inaddition to the 1800 specimens planted by branch members in 2012 as partof their scheduled horticultural activity.

Species planted as part of the offset project include oak trees which, throughout their lifetime, will remove up to eight tons of carbon dioxide fromthe atmosphere.

Mr Lloyd Jones also points out that trees support a wide variety of wildlife, and are home to many small mammals, mosses, lichens, and also insectswhich are a food source for birds.

To mark the 400 tree landmark, a commemorative planting ceremony wasorganised recently by the branch at Woodside Lodges in Ledbury,Herefordshire with park owners Ken and Janet Davies.

The new saplings at Woodside Lodges will join more than 600 indigenoushardwood trees planted at the park over the past two years by its familyowners. Lickhill Manor

Swimming pools are expensiveand valuable assets, it makessense to enable them to be

used earlier and later in the seasonor throughout the year.

The fact that the “Great British Summer”has failed to make an appearance for thelast few years makes putting them undercover them even more important.

A pool is undoubtedly the campsitesmajor attraction and is even more so if thepool is enclosed. When it comes tobooking one of the questions most oftenasked of campsites is whether or not theyhave a covered pool.

For camping enthusiasts who are naturallymore inclined to put up with the vagariesof the weather, it’s reassuring to choose

anestablishmentwith a coveredpool. It meansguaranteedswimming

whatever the weather. It’s even moreimportant for families, for whom it’sessential to have activities to keep thechildren occupied. A pool enclosure isalso a strong argument in favour of off-season holidays.

For any holiday park or campsite, acovered pool is a major source ofattracting new customers andencouraging them to return in future years. With an enclosure an average 20% +increase in the occupancy rate wasrecorded by a French campsite survey.

Lower financial investment less than 20%of a brick and mortar building

Very importantly a pool building will- - Take control of the weather – wind, rain and cold. - Ensure no cancellations due to bad weather.- Guarantee your daily timetable.- Provide safety. Access to the pool is controlled. Itis inaccessible outside of opening and supervisiontimes.- Reduce costs of heating, Even on dull days solargain through the roof will provide free heat to theinterior. - Reduce costs of cleaning, chemical usage andgeneral maintenance

Although Arch enclosures suppliesenclosures from 5m wide we are knownfor our larger enclosures up to 25m wide

(16ft – 82ft) andany length. Toaccommodatethese largerwidths we havefive differentstructural archdesigns.

A great feature of an Arch enclosure is thespecial side panel between the archeswhich are sliding windows. Thesewindows give you three opening andventilation options; fully open 2m x 2m,half open 2m x 1m or a ventilation slot (inthe middle) of 10cm x 2m wide.

The windows are made up in two sections. This allows the top half to be openedseparately to assist ventilation whilstkeeping the lower half in situ to ensuresmall children and pets are kept awayfrom the water. When both sections of theside panels are opened up, they slideopen to a height of 2 meters, allowingeasy access to the surrounding areas.

Are you sick of enquiries that are stopping you from getting on with your daily tasks,Do you miss bookings because you're not in the office when the phone rings?

Park Holidays UK is urging otheroperators to join it in supporting a newnational accreditation scheme for parks

which sell caravan holiday homes and lodges.

Under the scheme, an official National Caravan Council(NCC) kitemark is awarded to parks which adopt astringent new code of practice for treating customersfairly.

The 23-strong group was among the first in Britain toqualify for NCC Approved Holiday Park status when thenew official standard was announced this February.

Now the park's director, Tony Clish, says he hopes that allUK parks selling caravan holiday homes will strive to gainsimilar recognition for their commitment to customer care.

Park Holidays UK has been one of the principalchampions of the accreditation scheme since it was firstput forward as a way of providing extra assurances andsafeguards to customers.

The company also played an active part in drawing up itsworkings as a charter for fair play.

To receive Approved Holidays Parks recognition, parkbusinesses must agree to adopt a Consumer Code ofPractice which is modelled on code guidelines from theOffice of Fair Trading.

The code spells out the ways in which parks will adhere tothe principles of best practice both during the sale of aholiday home, and throughout the lifetime of a customer'sownership.

One of its chief aims is to ensure that buyers of caravanholiday homes are able to make fully informed decisions

with which they will continue for be satisfied for years tocome.

The code also builds in additional safeguards forcustomers which go beyond the levels of consumerprotection set out in law, and lays down new disputeresolution procedures.

Administering the scheme is the NCC, the representativebody of caravan manufacturers, which will also ensureparks' compliance with the code through an independentinspection process.

Tony Clish says he hopes that the adoption of the schemeby major groups such as his will act as a clarion call forall members of the holiday home parks industry:

"For the first time, this accreditation allows holiday homebuyers to tell at a glance if a park has committed itself tothe highest standards for dealing fairly with customers."he said.

"We are delighted to be founder-members of the scheme, and have been working with the NCC to ensure that itoffers an attractive set of undertakings for our customers.

"Potential holiday home buyers will have the assurancethat an approved park has been independently audited toa high level, and works to rigorous standards of customerservice. "I am sure customers will welcome this developmentwhich we see as a very positive step to further strengthenthe future of Britain's successful holiday home industry. "I am personally pleased to see this scheme beingadopted as I have long been an advocate for a code ofpractice which all professional operators would be keento embrace," added Tony.
