Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon.

For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and

secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Popular customs include

exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course,

waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

Storybook Time – for ages three through six –

Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

At Storybook Time, we sing a few songs, read one or two picture books and make a craft. We will read the

same books at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Here is what we have planned for this month:

December 4 – Bear just wants to sleep. It is winter time, after all, and that is what bears do. His friends,

however, have other plans for his evening. Can Bear stay up for Christmas? All will be revealed in Bear Stays

Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman.

December 11 – “Oh, gobble, gobble!” Turkey survived Thanksgiving, but lots of folks like to eat turkey for

Christmas dinner, too. Can this master (not really) of disguise trick his way out of being the main course for

two consecutive holidays? We’ll find out when we read Turkey Claus by Wendi Silvano and Lee Harper.

December 18 – Christmas is ONE WEEK AWAY and we’re excited! The characters in today’s stories are

excited, too…maybe a little too excited. Teddy keeps asking, “Is It Christmas Yet?” in a book by Jane

Chapman and Llama Llama just needs to calm down in Llama Llama Holiday Drama by Anna Dewdney.

Toddler Time – for age one through three – Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

At Toddler Time, we sing songs, recite nursery rhymes and read one story each week. The dates will be:

The Friends of the Pike Road Branch Library host our annual Holiday Open House featuring crafts,

refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus! Grown-ups should bring their cameras for photo opportunities with

Before Christmas (Moore) and a very special visitor will help us read When Santa Lost His Ho Ho Ho!

(Rader) December 11 and 12 With Christmas coming, we all know Waiting is Not Easy (Willems), we’ll learn why it’s important to wait

and how sometimes it’s worth it. Unfortunately, Llama Llama hasn’t learned that lesson yet in Llama Llama

Holiday Drama (Dewdney). December 18 and 19 Santa Claus gets really tired during his Christmas Eve flight and takes a nap, when he wakes up he finds

himself surrounded by bears in Santa Claus and the Three Bears (Modugno). Don’t worry! We have less scary

bears too, we’ll find out Where Teddy Bears Come From (Burgess). December 25 and 26 - Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays! No Story time!

**Open House Cookie and Recipe Exchange

Tuesday, December 5 @ 4-5p.m.

Description: Join us for milk and cookies (milk provided by us) for our first cookie exchange. Bring a plate of

at least a dozen cookies and we’ll send you home with a dozen of different varieties and a recipe booklet. If

you aren’t able to make the date/time, drop off your cookies the day of and we’ll hold a plate for you up until

closing Dec 6th. To get a recipe booklet, just share a cookie recipe any time before the 5th. Don’t want to leave

Rosa Parks Page Turners Book Club

Title: Georgia Bottoms by Mark Childress

Description: Georgia Bottoms may be Six Points, Alabama's finest feature - beautiful, worldly, a splendid cook

Really want to join a book club but don’t really like to read? Come join us at Cafe Louisa as we talk and color.

Read the book, or don’t! We alternate between fiction and nonfiction/biography as well as discuss other books

we read during the month or in the past that are related. Additional titles on the theme will be available, so

bring your library card! Just want to color and enjoy our company? You’re welcome! Bring your own supplies

or use some of ours. Coloring sheets provided.

Book Swap!

Description: Instead of all reading the same book we will choose someone to pick a book for. Pair off with

your chosen person and get to know their tastes and what they’ve enjoyed in the past. See if they’re looking to

read outside their normal genre, or if there’s a book you’ve read you think they’ll like. Then we’ll discuss

those books in January and see how we all did. This is a great time for new people to join! Books may be lent

from personal collections, but it is at the lender’s risk and borrowers should be made aware beforehand.

Small Mouse--and each time, the larger animal says to the small, "There's always room for a little one

here." Finally, Tired Donkey comes by, carrying Joseph and Mary, who asks "Where will my child be born?"

Kind Ox replies, "There is always room for a little one here." And so, Jesus is born in the stable with the

animals all around Him.

BOOK: “Santa Knows” by Cynthia and Greg Lritich Smith

Synopsis ---- Who knows if you've been naughty or nice? Santa knows, that's who! But not everyone believes

in Santa Claus. Bah, humbug. Consider Alfie F. Snorklepuss. He thinks he's proven that Santa Claus doesn't

exist. Alfie thinks there is no way that Santa could do all the things he's supposed to, like deliver billions of

presents all over the world in one night or know what every little kid wants. When Alfie starts spreading the

word that there is no Santa Claus, he makes someone very unhappy: his little sister Noelle. And so Noelle

turns to the only person who can help her. The one person Alfie thinks doesn't exist: Santa Claus. Ho, ho, ho!

In this sweet and funny picture book from husband-wife team Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith, with

Children will enjoy the movie “The Legend of the Poinsettia”, then Ms.

Anita will read The Legend of the Indian Painbrush, followed by a craft.

December 26: Everything Elephants Day

Children will enjoy singing elephant songs, then Ms. Anita

will read Little Elephant and Can You Move Like an Elephant?

Finally they, will do a coloring page activity.

Book Bunch Book Club

Wednesday, December 13 @ 2:00 p.m.

Book Bunch will discuss the Christian fiction novel The Gift by Richard Paul Evans.

The theme of the book is based on a personal experience the author had when he was 9 years old. His older

brother fell out of a tree and grabbed a seven-thousand-volt power line. He had fallen to the ground and gone

limp, but survived with holes burned through the soles of his shoes and deep imprints burned on his fingers.

That night his grandfather came to the house. He had what Christians call gifts of the Spirit, particularly the gift

of healing. He blessed the brother’s hand to heal without scar or blemish.

A week later, when the doctor removed the bandage to check the wound, there was no evidence of any injury.

There was neither sore nor blemish.

The Gift is about healing of the wounds within us. Please come join us for an interesting discussion of this

powerful book.

science projects. This program is geared specifically for boys and girls fourth grade and up.

On December 7th the Young Classic Book Club will meet from 4pm to 5pm to discuss A Christmas Carol

On Thursday, January 4, 2018 the Young Classic Book Club will discuss The Bridge to Terabethia by

Katherine Paterson.

Summary: Jess Aarons has been practicing all summer so he can be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. And

he almost is, until the new girl in school, Leslie Burke, outpaces him. The two become fast friends and spend

most days in the woods behind Leslie's house, where they invent an enchanted land called Terabithia. One

Lowder’s Friends and Family Chess Club meets every Saturday 10am to 1245pm (All children must be

picked up by our 1PM closing time). If you have ever wanted to learn how to play chess or if you have been

looking for a place to play join us each Saturday. All ages and levels are welcome! There is no need to pre-

register, just show up on Saturday. If Chess Club is canceled we will post a sign on the Meeting Room door.

Gamer’s Club meets the second Friday afternoon of the month. You must pre-register to play either a 330pm

to 430pm slot or 430pm to 530pm slot. Parents must stay in the Main Area during play time. Join us Friday,

December 8!

Registration is also required for the Lowder Lego League on the third Friday afternoon of the month 4pm-

5pm. Participants under the age of 8 must have an adult present with them while they play. Participants older

than 8 must have an adult with them as well, but adult may wait in the Main Area of the library. Complete

rules are available at the Circulation Desk. Come and sign up for Friday, December 8!

Open Mic Night is back! Join us the third Monday of the month at 6pm to “show your stuff!” If you can sing

or dance, if you write poetry, or if you like to make people laugh sign up by 5pm the day of the program and

show us what you can do! As always this is a family oriented program so nothing offensive to little (or big)

ears and we never ever criticize. Join us Monday, December 18.

Come be a part of DEACT! And just what is DEACTMAL? Drop Everything And Color (in the Main

Area of Lowder)! All ages are invited to come and spend the hour coloring the second Thursday of the

month. Monthly we will have a different theme. Join us Thursday, December 14 from 4pm-5pm. Since

Alabama became the 22nd state to join the Union on December 14th, 1819 we will celebrate our state’s 198th

birthday as this month’s theme!

Homework Help at Lowder is every Wednesday, 6pm-730pm-- unless school is out. Everyone must fill out

a new registration each year and they may be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Textbooks, worksheets, and

assignments must be brought to every session in order for students to receive assistance. We are also taking

applications at the Circulation Desk for Homework Helpers at this time.

Join us Tuesdays from 4pm to 5pm for a new program – Study Break! We would like to invite everyone,

from elementary to college age to drop by and take a study break by playing a board game, putting together a

puzzle, coloring a picture, or even filling a page with doodles!

We are excited to announce that we are going to be offering Help Me! Computer Classes for senior adults

the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 930am to 1030am. In December we will have classes Tuesday,

December 12th and Tuesday, December 19th. Please remember that pre-registration is required no later than

24 hours in advance of the class.

Our annual Christmas Open House will be Thursday, December 14th starting at 10am. We will have a visit

from the Jolly Old Elf Himself from 1030am to 12N and everyone is invited to come tell Santa what they want

for Christmas!

We are pleased to announce a new Lap Sit Time! It is for ages 0 to 1 year every Thursday 10am to 1015m for

a Librarian led Lap Sit time and then from 1015am to 1030am the parent will read board books to their

children. There is no craft associated with this program.

Our regular Preschool Story Time is Fridays at 1015am. All ages are welcome but please remember that

programming is geared towards ages 3 to 5. The usual program is to read a couple of books interspaced with

songs and movement ending with a craft activity.

Computer Classes for the Month of December 2017 TUESDAY ADULT CLASSES

Tuesday adult classes are held on the first, second, and third Tuesdays of the month at 10:00 a.m.

December 5 – Internet for Beginners Students learn how to access the Internet and surf the Web. The course examines the makeup of Web addresses and

teaches how to find information using search engines.

December 12 – Word I (MS Office 2010) Microsoft Word is used to create documents and letters. This course covers basic features such as ribbon, tabs, and

scrolling. Students learn to enter and select text, double space, and print. Word Art and Clip Art are also covered.

December 19 – Excel I (MS Office 2010) Microsoft Excel is used to create spreadsheets, which are used to organize information or to do numerical record-

keeping. The course covers creating a basic spreadsheet and a chart.

SATURDAY CHILDREN'S CLASSES

The first Saturday of every month is for 1st-4th Grades 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 5th-8th Grades 11:00 AM- 12:30 PM

December 2 – Publisher I (MS Office 2010)

Students will learn how to create holiday greeting cards and invitations using Publisher.

December 16 – PowerPoint (MS Office 2010)

Students will learn basic functions of this program to create presentations, including adding graphics and

multimedia.
