Bike Surgeon is the place to shop this Christmas! Widely known as the premier bike shop in the Metro East, they are also your go-to shop for outdoor adventure gear and apparel.

“We want people to get the most out of the freedom and fun that comes from getting outdoors, whether riding a bike, taking a hike, or going for a stroll around the neighborhood. We know how much we enjoy the great outdoors and we LOVE sharing that experience with our customers,” said Chris Norrington, Bike Surgeon co-owner.

Sharing a passion for the outdoors is a priority for Bike Surgeon staff, and it shows. The staff is well experienced in the products they sell. Whether it’s climbing mountains in the dead of winter to test the latest cold weath-er survival gear or making sure you are toasty warm at the local football game, the guys and gals of the Surgeon know how to set you up to really enjoy your time outdoors.

“This is the time of year when our outdoor side of the shop really shines,” said Bike Surgeon co-owner Jon Greenstreet. “We have some of the best gear and apparel in the industry, not your average run-of-the-mill equip-ment; but industry leading technology. This results in you staying warmer, dryer and most importantly more comfortable when out in the elements. From merino-wool base layers and socks to the latest in goose-down cold-weather jackets, we have everything you need to stay warm and dry this winter.”

Bike Surgeon is one of the only stores in the area that carries this level of gear and apparel from the industries’ best brands including: The North Face, Marmot, Merrell, Smartwool, Rab, MSR, and GoPro. You don’t have to be a mountaineer to appreciate the gear at Bike Surgeon. When you visit the Bike Surgeon, you’ll find jackets, vests, shirts, sweaters, footwear, pants, base-layers, shorts and more for everyone in the family. They also

stock accessories for everything outdoors: cycling, running, hiking, camp-ing and climbing. And, of course, there’s apparel for your indoor fitness activities, too, from spin shoes to yoga pants to the latest in work out gear for the gym. And finally, a cool selection of backpacks, sleeping bags, camp stoves, climbing gear and tents will get you set up to spend even more adventurous time outdoors.

Don’t forget the Surgeon when you are looking for GREAT GIFTS this holi-day season. They have all of your cold weather gear covered. And who doesn’t remember the joy of getting their first bike? Bring that same joy to your child’s eyes this Christmas with the best present any kid has ever received: the freedom and fun of their very first bike! Make this Christmas one to remember for everyone on your list with a great gift from the Bike Surgeon.

Bike surgeon is conveniently located at 3348 Green Mount Cross-ing in shiloh right out front of Target. Call them at (618) 622-1693 or visit www.bikesurgeon.com for more information. For the lat-est in shop happenings and deals, (like a FRee Helmet with any kids bike purchase this holiday season!) like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bikesurgeon and follow the fun!

Celebration is the theme at Bella Milano this month as they toast their 10th anniversary! Cheers!

After working on the concept of Bella Milano for over two years, partners Sam Guarino and Craig Kalogerou opened the first location with the intention of establishing a “fine casual” contemporary Italian restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere, and at a great price.

“We really wanted to provide this lovely ambiance, delicious menu at an affordable price for the community,” Guarino said. “Customers can expect a consistent, high-quality, well-priced product with every visit!”

Menu items are inspired by recipes from family, in-house chefs, Italy and the Hill in St. Louis. Guests will discover authentic dishes from Northern and Southern Italy as well as popular steak, chicken and seafood entrees. Other popular dishes are their signature items like the famous “Milano Salad,” Chicken or Beef Milano and Shrimp Rosalino to name a few. In addition, the bar for all locations features an exposed brick pizza oven where customers can watch their hand-tossed pizza, bruschetta and other items being prepared. Recently, the restaurant has introduced new dishes including updates on some old favorites and a whole new category of small plates, in which they invited the public to participate!

“We had a tasting contest using Facebook that turned out really well,” Guarino said. “And there’s a much more robust, value-oriented lunch menu. But don’t worry, we are not changing who we are – we’re just improving what we offer.”

Also debuting is the puccia bread sandwich made with puc-cia bread that is popular in Italy and oh, so delicious after a minute in the brick oven.

A lovely addition to the Edwardsville and O'Fallon locations is the fantastic all-season patio area. “There’s nothing more fun than dining al fresco with snowflakes all around,” Gua-rino said, smiling.

Bella Milano is known for their fun promotions and three of the best are the Family Feast, Martini Mondays and

Holiday Gift Cards. The Family Feast includes two pastas, or one pasta and pizza, or two pizzas; the famous Milano salad, bread and butter for just $29.95. This fabulous special can be enjoyed in the restaurant on Sundays and as a carryout everyday.

Holiday Gift Cards: For every $100 gift card purchased, the buyer receives $15. Cards can be purchased in the restaurant or online. Martini Mondays features half-price appetizers and $5 martinis all day.

Don’t forget it’s time to start booking holiday parties – no group is too small or too large. There is audio/visual equip-ment for presentations as well.

Metro east Bella Milano locations are: 455 A Regency Park in o’Fallon, (618) 624-0700; and 1063 state Route 157 in edwardsville, (618) 659-2100. Members of the military receive a 10% discount.

New! Winter 2014 Apple Vacations Non-Stop Flights from St. Louis to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta!

Featuring Fiesta Americana Hotels!

Business ProfILes

For the past 43 years, Ambassador Travel has achieved the highest levels in sales with Apple Vacations, and has been awarded as such. “This means that Apple Vacations designate us as their agency to go to because they

literally know us,” said owner Julia Crunk. “And we travel to all these resorts to check them out personally so when we book your vacation we are telling you by experience exactly what to expect.”

As an Apple Vacations Golden Apple agency for over 30 years, Ambassador has all the connections to get you on the beach with a cocktail in hand within four hours! “One of the things I like best about Apple is their great service, convenience and value,” Crunk said. As one of the nation’s first charter vacation companies, Apple Vacations was founded in 1969. The founders saw an opportunity to bring passengers to exotic locations at a fraction of the cost that the big airlines were charging. So they knew that by providing quality vacations at affordable prices, they could fill an unmet need in the travel industry and began building the nation’s largest provider of vacations to Mexico, Caribbean and Hawaii.

Just this year, Apple has added new non-stop charters from St. Louis to Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas weekly and there are always weekly non-stop charters

to Huatulco, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. And don’t worry if you want to go Cancun or Riviera Maya: there are non-stop flights everyday in the winter!

Call today for the latest Apple Vacations specials plus information on Ambassador’s annual Spring Training trip in March 2014 plus a Cards/Cubs Chicago weekend in July.

Ambassador is also a leading honeymoon vacation expert and they have a comprehensive web site that includes Crunk’s own creation called the “Honey-moon Registry” that is literally like “registering” for appliances at Dillard’s or Macy’s. “The couple books their honeymoon and then friends and family can make payments, buy upgrades, spa

services at the hotel, etc.,” she said.

The agenc y is also a member of the Bel-leville Business International (BnI) group. Ambassador Travel is located at 312 east Main street in Belleville; (618) 234-1046; www.4ambassadortravel.com.

Three years ago, The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) started a fundrais-ing campaign that helps Santa send letters – for just a $6 donation - to boys and girls before the magical night of Christmas. He knows if they’ve been naughty or nice, and what they need to work on before they hear the pitter-patter of reindeer hooves on the roof. For an additional donation, a special snowflake ornament or a magic key can be purchased to support the NCCS in fulfilling their mission to improve the quality of life for these precious children with cancer around the world. As a new year approaches, we hear more and more about revealing a NEW YOU. This applies to anti-aging for both face AND body, known as “total body reju-venation. With so many non-invasive technological advances, you can actually

tighten, tone, trim and improve your body and skin without the risks, pain, and cost of surgery.

Feeling like a stuffed turkey? Are you frustrated with your belly pooch, inner thighs, or love handles, but not ready for surgery? These areas are often resistant to diet and exercise. It’s a special kind of fat - stubborn fat! Until recently the only solution was a tummy tuck or liposuction. However, many women (and men, too!) don’t always have the luxury of time or the desire to deal with post-procedure recovery.

CoolSculpting, an FDA-cleared procedure, actually freezes stubborn fat. On average the treatment is one-hour and it’s performed in a medical office, not a hospital or surgical center. With CoolSculpting there isn’t any downtime or needles, just an applicator that is applied to the treatment area.

Lose your turkey neck! Ultrasound therapy is shown to lift and tighten loose skin on the neck (“turkey neck”), around the eyes, and on the jawline. This high-performance, physician-grade, non-surgical treatment uses ultrasound energy. Small, focused depos-its of ultrasound energy are delivered just below the skin, to the same tissue layer that is addressed in a surgical procedure. By delivering ultrasound in such a strategic method, it actually reconditions the current structure of the skin while stimulating the growth of new collagen, resulting in an uplifting appearance.

This treatment takes about one hour or less depending on the focus: full face, lower face, or upper face and eyes. Because the ultrasound energy is targeting structures deep

in the skin, patients may experience slight redness or tenderness in the treatment area. Otherwise, there isn’t any downtime and you can resume your normal activities. No more turkey skin – with Botox and Fillers! These are two extremely effective, anti-aging treatments. When done in a medical office, under the care of an artistic, precise Physician, Botox safely and quite easily helps to relax lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes and around the eyes. Dermal Fillers, on the other hand, are used to add volume to folds around the mouth (nasal labial folds) or enhance lost volume in the cheeks and lips. When these procedures are combined, which is referred to as a “Liquid Facelift,” they actually mimic the enhancements of a face lift.

While looking good enhances confidence, FeelInG good is equally as important. As the holiday season approaches, make a commitment to yourself to be Healthy and Happy!

To learn more about the treat-ments described above, contact ooh la la spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center at 618.288.9117 or oohlalaWellness.com. Complimentary consultations are available at our Medical spa in Glen Carbon, Il.

Plastic surgeon enjoys Making A difference In Patients’ lives

dr. Ryan diederich

MidAmerica Plastic Surgery is found at the centrally located An-derson Hospital in Maryville. Led by Board Certified Plastic Sur-geon Dr. Ryan Diederich, MidAmerica Plastic Surgery specializes

in Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Body Sculpting, procedures for the Hand, Eyelid and Face as well as Fillers and Skin Cancer services.

Offering a warm and inviting office that feels like home, Dr. Diederich said, “I really love the facility here at Anderson. My staff, and the staff at the hospital, are so helpful and willing to assist with anything our patients need.”

Growing up in Southern Illinois, Dr. Diederich attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and actually owned a software company for a time. “One of my best clients was a group of physicians and I just really liked what they were doing and how they made a difference in people’s lives,” he said. From there he attended SIU’s medical school followed by residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with time spent at St. John's Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Ill., as well as a rotation at Children's Hospital in Chicago.

He and his wife, who is from Springfield, chose the Metro East as their home rather than a West County address. “We love the people here – everyone is so friendly,” he said, “and my patients are so wonderful. It’s so nice to get to know such hardworking, honest people. That just makes what I do so much better.”

Cosmetic procedures are the most popular types of surgeries he performs including breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, body contouring, facelift and mommy makeover.

For breast augmentation, “We employ state of the art technology such as the Vectra 3D which allows patients to view results pre-surgery,” he explained. “This is an amazing, real-time 3D application. It quickly takes a three-dimensional snap-

shot of you that can be moved to any angle on the screen.” Then

Dr. Diederich is able to select the

exact implants and show you the results, from

any angle, on you. No more guessing!

Currently, “The new buzz word is the ‘mommy makeover,’ which involves breast lift with or without augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction or anything else a patient desires to regain their body before having chil-dren,” he said.

Staying on the forefront of innovative plastic surgery, Dr. Diederich of-fers the latest techniques such as fat grafting and progressive tension abdominoplasty. Fat grafting has revolutionized facelift and breast pro-cedures by replacing volume lost over time or from medical conditions. This volume replacement is with your own fat and the correction can be permanent. Progressive tension abdominoplasty is a tummy tuck tech-nique providing greater improvement in appearance, less complications, and no drains after surgery.

The best time to undergo any of these surgeries is of course in the winter months to be prepared for the warmer months. The earlier the better because results of surgery will only get better with time.

Of course, MidAmerica Plastic Surgery offers a full line of medical-grade skin care, botox, fillers, laser and more.

In addition to cosmetic procedures, Dr. Diederich’s specialties are hand procedures and reconstruction, and removal of cancerous skin cells with a surgical procedure that completely removes the cancer giving it a 98% success rate. He is also well versed in skin cancer reconstruction.

Hand surgeries can be anything from carpal tunnel and trigger finger, to fractures and injuries. “I also do many hand and face procedures from car accidents, sports incidents, etc.,” he said. MidAmerica Plastic Surgery performs most of their surgical procedures at Anderson and Edwardsville Ambulatory. Soon Dr. Diederich will be available for surgery at Alton Memorial.

MidAmerica does offer financial help and infor-mation can be found on the web site at www.midamericaplasticsurgery.com or by calling (618) 288-7855 to schedule your consultation today.

Dr. Diederich is a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstruction Surgeon. He is a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, The American Association for Hand Surgery , Illinois State Medical Society, and is president elect for the Madison County Medical Society.

Happy Holidays From The Louvre Salon and Spa

The louvre salon and spa in Fairview Heights has been “the” hot spot since it first opened in 1999 on Lincoln Trail. Since then it has evolved into a full-service salon and spa, and eventually moved to a brand new building on Old Collinsville Road in 2005.

“Our spa offers a professional atmosphere using quality products for the care of our cli-ents,” said esthetician Liz Kaiser. “We have seven stylists and technicians to offer skincare, nail and massage services – anything the client needs.”

The spa is designed with spacious therapy and private pedicure suites to provide all the comforts of home. “Our clients are our family,” Kaiser said.

Meet The stylists and TechniciansTraci Fietsam, nail tech (910-8144), has worked in the Belleville area for 11 years. “I specialize in gel polish, manicures and pedicures, and pink and white acrylics,” she said. “It is a dream come true to work in a high-end salon like the Louvre.”

Keo Geschwend, nail tech (696-9569), has over 20 years of experience and loves her position doing pink and white acrylic nails, gel manicures and pedicures, and spa mani-cures and pedicures. emily Holcomb, massage therapist (610-6106), has been working in her field for three years. “The satisfaction of helping clients with their aches and pains brings such happiness,” she said. Holcomb specializes in Swedish and deep tissue.

liz Kaiser, esthetician (444-6360), has worked at The Louvre Spa for five years and had been in the area for 11 years. “Being at The Louvre is a dream job for me. I specialize in facial peels and microdermabrasion for all skin types,” she said, “plus I do full-body waxing including Brazilians.”

darla Knight-lewis, nail tech (444-2159), has 10 years of experience in her profession all in the Fairview Heights/Belleville area so she really knows her clients well. She also spe-cializes in pink and white acrylics, manicures, pedicures, gel manicures and gel pedicures.

Amy lippert, nail tech (604) 5504), has been doing nails for 10 years and started working at The Louvre Nail Salon in 2005. “I specialize in pink and white acrylic nails, and enjoy doing pedicures and gel manicures,” she said. “My favorite part of the job is talk-ing to my clients and hearing about their family. I truly feel that my clients are more like my friends that I have built relationships with over the years. I couldn't imagine doing anything else!” Terri Terhaar, healing touch therapist (401-8128), “fell in love with the practice because it’s a gentle, non-invasive approach to health,” she said. Involved with this type of massage since 2010, she said Healing Touch Practitioners are certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. “Healing touch is energy therapy that supports and facilitates physical, emotional mental and spiritual health.” To schedule an appointment with any of these professionals, please call the number listed by their name. The spa is located at 5721 old Collinsville Road in Fairview Heights. www.thelouvresalonspa.com.

Midwestern Propane Gas Co. is a long-time business in Belleville dating all the way back to 1936 in the downtown area. Founders A.J. and Martha Urban first opened as a butane retailer, which at that time was the “new” energy fuel for

cooking and heating. They had customers from Chicago all the way to Cairo.

The business thrived as the Urbans established a reputation for dependability and service throughout the state and in the early 1950s, the company moved to its present location on South Belt East near Belle-Clair Fairgrounds.

As the market and technology changed, so did Midwest-ern Propane Gas Company. In the 1960s, sales of gas grills and gas logs were added to their services and by the mid-1980s, demand for high-quality leisure products grew exponentially and Hearthside Grill & Fireplace, Ltd. was born in 2000.

Today, Darrell and Don Urban are the third generation owners of the company and their nephew, Mark Urban, is manager. Hearthside has a charming showroom filled with an amazing array of fireplace, stove, and gas log displays as well as charcoal, gas, and pellet grills.

“The company has always sold products that customers can heat their homes with,” Mark Urban said. “We also have a great relationship with area home builders but as their market declined we then focused on remodels.”

Interestingly, web sites such as Pinterest inspire do-it-yourselfers to come in with a plan in hand and the staff at Hearthside helps them with their list. “But there are those customers who are not as handy, and we can do the whole project from start to finish.”

Those projects can include indoor fireplaces designed with wood, stone, slate, brick or any material available today, and they can be woodburning or gas. Stoves come in all shapes and sizes and heat with wood, gas, electric or pellets.

The latest trend is outdoor fireplaces and firepits which also come as permanent as a built-in stone model or a portable fire pit. Both are fabulous for an evening with family or to entertain a large group of friends. Hearthside staff can design and construct whatever the customer needs.

A special event presented every year a weekend or two before Mother’s Day is GrillFest, which is a fun day for all but also a canned food drive for Zion Lutheran.

“The Urban family has been an active part of the Belleville community since we opened in 1936,” said Urban. “Five years ago, we started this event to give back to the community that has done so much for us. Our first year

customers brought in 700 to 800 cans – last year we were up to 1,500! It’s just a no-pressure sales day where some of our best customers come up and show off their grilling talents and we’re able to help

out the Zion food pantry.”

The showroom also showcases all manner of grilling accessories perfect the outdoor chef in your life: tool sets, rubs, sauces, gloves, gift sets, cookbooks, grill gadgets, aprons, thermometers and so much more. Of course there are gift certificates available.

Visit Hearthside at 418 s. Belt east in Belleville; (618) 257-0700; www.hearthsidegrill.com.

The majority of homes today still rely on natural gas or electricity generated by coal-fired power plants. But as energy costs have risen steadily over the last decade--with no end in sight-- making a home more energy efficient is a must.

Where Does Your Money Go?According to Energy Star, the average American family spends approximate-ly $2,200 per year on utilities. But where does all that money go? Heating costs account for the largest chunk of the pie, encompassing 29% of total utilities expenses. Air conditioning costs account for 17%, water heating eats up 14%, and appliances (such as the refrigerator, washer, and dryer) account for 13%. The remainder is spent on electric appliances, such as the TV, computer, and lighting.

Practical Energy UpgradesHomeowners looking to save money should focus their efforts on the areas that use up the most utility dollars, mainly upgrades that affect heating and cooling costs. An added bonus is that sometimes these upgrades will also improve the value of your home.

Upgrade to a New Furnace Energy efficient furnaces are a very attractive item for energy savings and for resale. Since heating makes up the biggest chunk of your energy expen-ditures, it makes sense that upgrading here will make the most impact on reducing utility costs. Energy Star rated furnaces are reportedly 16% more efficient on average in energy costs.

If your furnace is more than 15 years old or is frequently in need of costly repairs, consider installing an Energy Star-qualified model.Conventional gas furnaces are usually located in a basement, utility room or a well-vented closet. They contain a combustion chamber where natural gas or propane is burned. The burner is ignited by a pilot light, a flame that burns 24 hours a day.

High Efficiency FurnacesHigh-efficiency furnaces produce a lot more heat from the fuel they burn, saving homeowners substantially over the long haul. Most high-efficiency gas furnaces are induced-draft models — so named because they contain an energy-efficient electric fan. It draws air from outside the home into the combustion chamber and propels exhaust gases from the combustion chamber out of the house via the flue pipe. The efficiency of induced-draft furnaces results from the use of more efficient heat exchangers, but also from an electronic ignition, which eliminates the need for a constantly burning pilot light.

ENERGY SAVING HEAT . . .

The most efficient gas furnaces on the market today are condensing models. These furnaces contain a second heat exchanger, which extracts additional heat from the flue gases, cooling them until the moisture they contain condenses. (Condensation of moisture releases additional heat.)

Both condensing and non-condensing furnaces can be equipped with sealed combustion chambers. This feature prevents dangerous exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, from entering our homes.

When shopping for a new furnace, look for Energy Star qualified models. Their efficiencies, which are listed as annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), run from approximately 83 percent to 97 percent. As a rule, the induced-draft furnaces have efficiencies in the 80 percent range, and induced-draft condensing furnaces are in the 90 percent range. You can save $500 off a new Furnace this month at Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. For a free estimate call 618.623.0572

Pool Tables to PianosIn a world of the temporary, gifts of history and heritage.

An antique pool table is lovingly restored to its former beauty. Such an object preserves the history and craftsmanship of a bygone era. It makes a statement about the values of the owners and provides a unique focal point for family games.

An old toy piano is handed back to its owner following refurbishing. After enriching the childhood of the owner’s daughter, the old piano will find new life in the hands of a grandchild.

Let us preserve your family’s heritage.

Precision Wood Restoration

Classmates at Collinsville High School, Lisa Paul and Gary Lutman saw each other on and off over the past 25 years but recently thought the combination of her love of antiques and his talent as a former professional pool player and billiard-room owner, would make a very special business: Fine Billiard Gallery.

Their business is to find and restore antique and vintage billiard tables to their original condition, and then resell them. “Not only do they look great, but they play great, too,” Paul said. “These tables are with us so long that we've become very attached to them. We love what we’re doing.”

Indeed, they started working on a few tables in March of this year and they are just now beginning to see the finished products. “It’s a painstaking process because we are both such perfectionists,” she said. And because they use only the most specialized artisans in the country to help with every little piece to the billiard table “puzzle.”

For example, they send the actual rails of the table to a specialist in Atlanta. And “we located the best metal worker in the area, the best pool table mechanic

and the best wood restoration ar tist in John Hurn at Precision Wood Restoration,” Paul continued.

Before finding Hurn, Paul said they “went through a couple other wood work-ers, but John at Precision is the best there is! He has helped us more than anyone else. And I’m sure we’ve given John many headaches,” she laughed, referring to the duo’s perfectionism.

“I have found working on these projects to be enormously interesting,” Hurn said. “They are like antiques and the older, the more fun! I’m also lucky to have clients like this who understand the process.”

For sure it is unique in that no one else in St. Louis is doing this type of res-toration and really only 10 or less in the whole country. So far, pieces have come from as far away as Martha’s Vineyard, Detroit and Nashville, Tenn. “These tables are beautiful pieces of history,” Paul said.

Pictured on this page are tables either undergoing restoration or having just been completed. For more information, call (314) 791- 9711 and find us on Facebook (Fine Billiard Gallery).
