The Holbeck Landslide

Lesson Objective:

To explore what caused the cliff at Holbeck to collapse

Success Criteria:

3 To be able to describe some of the causes of the landslide

4 To be able to explain the causes of the landslide and categorise them

5 To be able to explain in detail the causes of the landslide using own knowledge of coastal erosion to back up points made

The Holbeck Hall Hotel falls into the sea!

WHY?

LO: To explore what caused the cliff at Holbeck to collapse

What caused the Holbeck Landslip?

Task:

Sort your cards into the THREE categories:

• Weather• Sea• Geology (rock type)

Challenge Questions:

1) How do you think this landslide affected the owners of the hotel?

2) How do you think the hotel guests felt?3) Do you think there is anything Scarborough

Council could have done to prevent the landslide?

Either sort them in a table or a mind

map. Its up to you!

What were the effects of the Holbeck landslide?

'Our hearts were in it,' said Mrs Turner. 'I knew everything in it. Even the curtains you can see

swinging from the gable: I chose them. I've lost my dream.'

'It was a place I always knew. I was there just before Christmas for a

dinner: it was part of Scarborough, Christmas at Holbeck Hall. I can't

believe it,'

' Holbeck Hall's demise has become part of Scarborough's legend.

The business was worth £500, 000

Rachel one of the staff said ‘I feel so sorry for my boss. She loved the hotel. I am really sad. I need to find another job as I need the money.

The noise was really loud.’

The most interesting thing I have learnt today is …

I would like to know more about …

Task:

Create a short news paper report to explain the causes and impacts of the Holbeck Landslip.

Include:

• What caused the landslip

• What were the impacts of the landslip on:o The hotelo The hotel ownerso The hotel guests

Briefly describes some of the different causes using the

information directly from the cards. May explain some

impacts of the landslip. Lacks detail.

Detail description of the 3 different impacts. Starts to put

information in own words. Uses knowledge of coasts to explain how erosion works.

Explains the impact of collapse on people. Some detail. May

include some views from people

A detailed explanation of the different impacts that is written all in their own words. Uses knowledge of coastal erosion to explain in detail how the cliff was eroded. Evaluates which cause had the most impact. Describes how this impacted people by using interviews. Very detailed.

You can make up interviews and quotes

with people!

Holbeck Landslip Newspaper ReportPeer Assessment

Assess the news paper report given to you:

1) Underline the level criteria you think that person has met

2) Give them TWO STARS – things they have done well

3) Give them a WISH LIST – some points for improvement

The summer of 1992 was very dry leaving the cliff cracked

The coastline is eroded by the sea.

The cliff is made up of layers of “boulder clay” and “sands &

gravels”

Sands & Gravels – hold water creating a wet layer between the

boulder clay

The 1992 – 1993 winter is very wet.

The wet sand & gravel layers slips down causing the cliff to collapse

Rain seeps into the cracks in the cliff increasing the weight of the

steep cliff.

Boulder Clay – is impermeable (it doesn’t let water flow through it)

Erosion undercuts the base of the cliff making steep slopes.
