JULY 2013 2 Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225). Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters. We are heading to Moscow and St Petersburg initially and then other parts of Europe. Malcolm will chairing the next couple of meetings. John Cannon has offered to fill in on Exec as quite a number of the committee will be away. Our last meeting was rather a long one. Alison and Chris gave us a demonstration of the new members website and it will be live by the time the Circular comes out. The members site will be password protected and initially you will be able to change your contact details. The next stage will be that you will be able to put in walk previews directly onto the web. They will be approved by the Walks Data Officer. Members will still be able to put in previews by mail or email. We decided that we would attend the Sustainable Living Festival again this year, 9 & 10 November. There has been a letter about the dog walks that have appeared on the programme. These walks are different from previous dog walks and the committee considers they are within the Constitution. There has been very little comment for or against the dog walks but the most prevalent comment has been “if you don’t like dogs don’t go on a dog walk” just as if you don’t like carrying a pack don’t go on an extended walk etc etc. It is one of the strengths of our wonderful Club that we can cope with such a huge range of members’ interests and abilities. The parameters are that dog walks would be a separate category - DWNQ (Dog walks non qualifying). Dogs would not be allowed on any other walks and they would only go to approved dog walking areas. We resolved to buy a second oven for the Hewardia side of the hut. Linda Cook is organising a skills day for cyclists on 28 September.

Page 7: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC

JULY 2013 7Anne McConnell has prepared a 4 volume report on Mt Wellington Historic Huts and Tracks. David Leaman and John Street have waded through these volumes and have made a number of comments. We do not support many of the recommendations. Ask John for further comments. We have also written to 17 Members of Parliament requesting that part of the money to support the wind back of Forestry be spent on upgrading and maintenance of tracks. There have been numerous comments about the state of the South Coast Track, which is just one where money needs to be spent. At the Steppes weekend we met with members of the Mountain Huts Preservation Society and Parks rangers for the area. It was a very productive and amenable meeting. The Hut Preservation Society would welcome support from our members. If you are interested in helping maintain some of Tasmania’s huts, please contact Roger Nutting : [email protected] . As a very long term plan we had a look at the Constitution. Over the years it has become totally apparent that members want to walk or cycle and participate in the Club activities. Many members make a huge contribution to the administration of the Club, but in general they do not want to be involved in the Executive side of running the Club. They like to be kept informed of what is happening but they expect the Executive to do their bit. The Constitution is currently set up so that members make the decisions, whereas most organisations have updated their Constitution to have an executive committee which makes the decisions and if you don’t like what is happening you sack them at a Special or Annual General Meeting. Good governance is very important and our present Constitution makes it very easy for meetings to be stacked. It does not represent the way members want the executive to run the Club or good governance. Any changes which might be made would be debated over the next year or so with a view to being formally voted on at the AGM in 2014. Happy winter walking and I’ll see you in August. Rupert Manners, President

JULY 2013 10SAREX 2013 This annual S&R training weekend is being held along the Overland Track on the weekend of 3-4 August. People on the Day Search call-out list should have received email details about the weekend but participation is open to all Club Members. Brief details about the weekend appear below. Please contact Malcolm Sherlock or one of the S&R contacts listed at the back of this Circular if you require more information. SAREX will be a state-wide exercise this year with involvement of police SAR from the north and north-west. Southern Tasmanian involvement in the exercise will again involve a trip to Lake St. Clair and deployment in the field from Cynthia Bay by boat or on foot. The helicopter is involved in the exercise but will be based at the northern end of the park. It is unlikely you will have exposure to it this year. The scenario this year is a treasure hunt. No missing person who never gets found. You will have to practice wide and varied SAR techniques to find clues and hopefully prizes. Exercise Objectives relevant to HWC are to:

• Develop liaison links between Tasmania Police, other agencies and volunteer groups.

• Practice and develop the practical Search and Rescue skills of Tasmania Police, SES and volunteer personnel.

• Assess the capabilities of the SES portable radio network, the National Parks and the Police radio network and mobile phone service along the length of the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair Overland Track

• To test the capabilities of general volunteers in a hostile winter environment.

Plan A is to walk along Taroona foreshore tracks and the Alum Cliffs track to Kingston Beach and to continue to Boronia Beach for lunch, returning via the same tracks. This option is dependent upon low tides and the goodwill of a local landowner. Should either of these be unfavourable then we'll adopt Plan B i.e. to walk in the opposite direction along the recently reopened Grange Track to the Truganini Track, ascend to Mt. Nelson Signal Station and return via Porters Hill. Whichever walk we do afternoon tea will follow at No. 7 Karingal Court. Medium pace. Bring water. Prospectives welcome but must book.

Overnight & Extended Walks 22-25 Aug Meander Valley Base Camp MM Rupert Manners email: [email protected] I plan to camp at the Quamby Corner camp ground and to do day walks to Mother Cummings Peak, Meander Falls, Quamby Bluff and Bastion Cascades. Quamby Corner has a great BBQ under cover but portable fuel stoves may be useful. Suitable for fit prospectives. Numbers limit. Book with coordinator by 10 August. 6-8 Sept EXT Lake Dobson MM Dawn Albert 6225 0921 7-8 Sept South East Cape MR Rupert Manners email: [email protected] The South East Cape is the southernmost point of the Tasmanian mainland. It is a bit too far for a day walk from Cockle Creek so I plan to drive to Cockle Creek on the Saturday afternoon and walk to South Cape Bay, camp the night and then go out to the Cape on Sunday and return to Cockle Creek and Hobart on the same day. I have been down there before and it became scrubby and we gave up but maybe we took a wrong route - so be prepared for some scrub. Fuel stoves required. Suitable for fit prospectives. Numbers limit. Book with coordinator by 1 September. 14-15 Sep WE Shadow Lake and Mount Hugel 30km MR John Street email: john.street.hobart@**gmail.com Cradle Mtn/Lake St Clair NP Although I haven't actually tasted it yet, Mt Hugel seems to me like one of those magnificent Marlborough Sound Sauvignon Blancs with tasting notes of dry track, light scrub, alpine flora, magnificent views and a rough bouldery finish. We will open the bottle on Saturday afternoon with a short walk to the delightful Shadow Lake campsite, and finish it off on Sunday with the climb of Mt Hugel and then wander back home. It may feel like a drunken wander but you'll get home stone cold sober looking forward to that bottle in the fridge. Suitable for fit prospectives with dry throats. Book with the coordinator by 7 Sept.

Book with coordinator by 10 September. 10 -13 Oct The Tasman Coastal Trail MM Rupert Manners. email: [email protected] 17-20 Oct EXT Mt Ida 30km MR John Street Cradle Mtn/Lake St Clair NP email:john.street.hobart@**gmail.com 13-16 Nov EXT Tasman Peninsula SE/SM Jeanette Brown 6227 1828 and Felicity Walch 6229 5391 We are planning an extended trip to the Tasman Peninsula to fit in with our mid week and weekend SE/SM programmes. We will be staying at Port Arthur Holiday Park tel: 6250 2340 where a variety of accommodation from cabins to tent sites is available. They are offering 3 days for the price of 2 which makes the Waterfront cabin price $87 per night for 2 people or $97 per night for 3. (when booking mention the 3 nights for the price of 2 deal). It is expected that participants will make their own bookings but we are happy to pass on the details of those who wish to share and for car pooling. Wed 13 Nov - Waterfall Bay: Meet at car park opposite Sorell Police Station ready to move off at 10.00am or meet at the Blowhole car park at 11.00am. Thurs 14 Nov - Crescent Bay Fri 15 Nov – Coal Mines historic site Sat 16 Nov - Marion Bay on the way home We may organise a group dinner at the RSL one night. Come for all 4 walks or just one. Please contact Jeanette or Felicity for further details or when you have made a booking. 15-23 March 2014 Maria Island Dawn Albert 6225 0921 WALK REPORTS Bluff River Gorge - Apr with Jim Baptist A cool and sometimes breezy day with occasional showers failed to dampen the enthusiasm of 15 keen participants. Plenty of stinging nettles and bracken ferns were cleared away as we passed through. River level extremely low. Some evidence of recent flooding, but track remains in good condition and appears to be getting plenty of use. Circuit completed in 5 hrs.

Page 25: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC

JULY 2013 25Trestle Mountain - Apr with Jenny Ford A lovely walk on my birthday, lunch on top of Tresle Mt. Good views all round. We enjoyed birthday cake back at the cars. CYCLE- Cambridge-Seven Mile Beach - Apr with Anneliese Ortmann Ten minutes ride out of starting point, half way to the Airport Roundabout, it started to rain and pouring down with sleet! Some of us sheltered at several points to put on over-trousers until we all got together and executive decision was made to abandon the ride, go back and have coffee at Red Square instead. It was only 11 degrees, showers and we were wet enough. Fortescue to Dolomieu - Apr with Roger Hurd Not a promising morning but 5 enthusiasts arrived. Spent the day dry with lots of sun looking out over Fortescue Bay then the Hyppolytes and Thumbs above Bivouac Bay. Hazards Traverse - Apr with David Chung The cheerful party of nine spent a challenging day scrambling on rock with spectacular backdrops all day. Everyone coped well with the traverse but the granite took a toll on both flesh and cloth. A satisfying walk which was enjoyed by all. Knocklofty to Junction Cabin - Apr with Roger Hurd Nice new track over the Knocklofty (374m) summit then onto The Slides and main fire trail. Climbed Myrtle Gully to Junction Cabin for relaxed lunch. Our return was on the northern part of Old Farm Trail, very steep and slippery. Then on main fire trail and back to Forest Road. Fagus at Cradle - Apr with Carolynne Smith The fagus was pretty, the weather was very wet and very windy. Had a comfortble two nights in the hut (2 camped), and came home a day early as any walk option would have seen the milk blown out of your cuppa. We did have an interesting visit to waterfall valley hut though. CYCLE - Cremorne/Mortimer Bay - Apr with Mary Foster The rain which threatened all day finally came when we were safely back at “Windy’s” having coffee. Quite windy. Coningham - Apr with Jeanette Brown The weather forecast was for gale force winds so we decided to make a slight change to the route. The wind did not come in with full force until we got back to the cars so a very pleasant time was had by the nine brave souls. Mt Wellington - Apr with Rosanna Cameron The low cloud kept us away from the advertised walk on the top of Mount Wellington. Instead we walked to The Springs and set off to Junction Cabin. We explored two old hut sites off the track and then returned directly to The Springs and the Quarry.

Page 26: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC

JULY 2013 26 Tarn Shelf Circuit - Apr with Philip Le Grove The colour change of the deciduous beech was late this year and the timing for this walk was about right. 10 walkers enjoyed a circuit walk across Tarn Shelf and return via Lake Webster in fine but cold weather. We called into the Club hut to show some of the members in our group who had not been inside. Very impressed. New Norfolk - Apr with Dieter Buechner Our group of seventeen enjoyed a pleasant walk around the outskirts of New Norfolk following the trails along the Derwent and Lachlan Rivers. Selma & The Plug - Apr with Philip Rogers We were lucky with the weather which was foul at Mt Field only a few kms away. We enjoyed the little secret spot tucked away on a tight loop of the Ouse River. Good camping area and a cute little free standing sandstone arch. The old house “Selma” sadly needs a lot of attention. Mt Connection Circuit - Apr with Jim Baptist A perfect sunny and windless autumn day for the 10 walkers to complete this 7 hour circuit walk. Mt Arthur, Tom Thumb, The Lecturn, Mt Connection, Pulpit Rock and Thark Ridge were all visited and the views soaked up. Wellington Falls Bike & Walk - Apr with Nick Hume Bicycle is the best way to access the beginning of the Wellington Falls track from Ferntree. What a day we had. The correas and dracophyllums along the walk were a delight. The autumn weather absolutely stunning. The company marvellous. The enjoyment of coffee and cake at the Ferntree Tavern a bonus at the end of the return ride. These sorts of trips are a pleasure for a trip coordinator to lead. Ship Stern Bluff/Tunnel Bay - Apr with Trish Colles It had been a while since I had done this walk and even longer since the tide allowed us to walk out on to the platform. We were very lucky with the weather so the views were spectacular and especially enjoyed by those who were doing the walk for the first time. The tide was out so we were able to wander along the rock platform and enjoy the spectacular cliffs. An enjoyable day with pleasant company. Umbrella Point - May with Dieter Buechner This was another day in paradise. Twenty walkers enjoyed a great day out following the rough tracks along the coastline to reach Umbrella Point for lunch. Even the large pod of dolphins played their part, as arranged, to entertain us on our crossing to reach Bruny Island. The icecreams were a welcome treat before boarding the ferry again for our return trip to the cars.

JULY 2013 27Ice House & Wellington Circuit - Apr with Roger Hurd First reminder of autumn, cool morning, cold wind. Fifteen starters warmed up on the Ice House climb. Very cool trip across the summit. Returned happily via Panorama and Organ Pipes tracks. A very comfortable walk. Cape Raoul - Mar with Lee Douglas A blustery day with a few welcome showers was enjoyed by six walkers who went to Cape Raoul and back. Plenty of seals to be seen sheltering from heavy seas at the rocks at the base of Cape Raoul. Salters Point - May with Jim Baptist A beautiful clear and sunny day greeted the 12 walkers joining me on this scenic coastal walk. Some portions of the track have become somewhat indistinct since my last visit and would benefit from some clearing. Circuit completed in 6 1/2 hours. The Steppes Training Weekend - May with Pam Powell Overall it was a successful weekend, despite the dire weather warnings. The snow overnight on Friday was a real bonus and something new for a Steppes Weekend. Our numbers were limited because of the broadcast warnings (snow, high winds, road weather alerts). The weather was cold with a chilling wind most of Saturday with the wind dropping towards evening and the temperatures rising overnight. A large group went to Rats Castle on Sunday, with a smaller group going to investigate the opening of the Lagoon of Islands Lake. I'm pleased with what we achieved in discussion with NPWS and Mountain Huts. A lot of goodwill was demonstrated by NWPS which I hope we can build on to have a formal agreement regarding use of the Steppes. Windermere - May with Linda Cook Most people will drive straight past Austins Ferry and never know the joy of walking around this meandering area of the River Derwent. It is only a short walk but it takes a long time returning to the cars because there are many locations that demand our attention! Walkers are delighted by water birds swimming in numerous secluded bays and the stunning views up, down and across to the eastern shore. “Gosh, it's beautiful here,” is often spoken, “I'll have to come back again.” Tasman Trail - May with Bonnie Tilley This was rather a long walk for the short hours of autumn daylight, however we still enjoyed our delicious afternoon tea at the finish at Fortescue Bay. So then it was dark by the time we packed up and set out for home, but the compensation was that many of us saw the beautiful owl fly by. The very helpful Steve and Tracy Mundy of Tasman Peninsula Buses ferried us to the start at Waterfall Bay. It was a pleasure to deal with them (Refer p.13). I had 14 walkers, four of whom had not done this walk before.

JULY 2013 28Miena Base Camp - May with Rupert Manners Base camping in style in a wonderful 5 bedroom fishermans shack (more like a mansion) with all mod cons. The day walks we did were on day 1 to Rats Castle, day 2 Wild Dog Tier which has a boulder field about a kilometre long. day 3 we went up Sandbanks Tier and then over the top to Mt Blackwood, and day 4 we went up Split Rock. The overriding impression on these mountains is boulders - there were a lot of them but the weather was perfect which made them dry and easy to manage. It was a great trip. Devils Backbone - May with Geoff Morffew Having been forced off the ridge by 100km winds (yes, and confirmed by BOM) last year we returned. The Devils Backbone is the ridge to the north of Hartz Pass, consisting of a variety of rocky outcrops, interspersed with scrub that gets worse the further north you proceed, with very occasional pads. Visibility was reasonable when we started, but a cloud of mist developed making finding our drop-off point difficult. Lunch was enjoyed at Lake Osborne and stone-spinning on a very calm Lake Perry before we returned. Berriedale to Windermere - May with Rinda Burgess The 10 of us had a lovely walk that Friday. Thanks to the weather and to walkers very knowledgeable of the area. Hooray for Isabel, Hilary and John who know the foreshore path which leads from the Berriedale Reserve to Windermere Beach. I would have taken the party up along the cycling track! Oh well, I’ll know for next time. A good time was had by all. Kermandie Track from Bennetts Rd - May with Brian Garland A party of 10 enjoyed a walk from Bennetts Rd to Hartz Mountain National Park. Thanks to the working bee which cleared this track last year - definitely a very rewarding track to walk. After walking through magnificent rain forest, we had lunch with a refreshing breeze at scenic Lake Osborne. The day concluded with a convivial cafe stop at Geeveston. Sentinels - May with Carolynne Smith Uncannily calm conditions allowed for views in the ‘WOW’ category! Peaks of blue and grey in a 360 degree panorama. Patches of mirror reflections in the lakes. A group of 5 on a lovely day out. Thank you. Echo Sugarloaf via Randalls Bay - May with Walter Bartlett Six walkers enjoyed the walk over Echo Sugarloaf on perfect autumn day. Most of the route would be classified as ‘easy’. However, the climb from Randalls Bay to the top of the hill is on the challenging side of ‘medium’. One member of the party elected to return to the starting point rather than face the challenge of the climb. The day’s activities culminated in afternoon tea at the leader’s home. Lindisfarne - May with Phyl Wyatt This walk was shortened to Anzac Park, Lindisfarne because of the drizzly rain. Six persons walked to a shelter, had an early lunch and returned to their cars in heavier rain.

JULY 2013 29 North/South Track Mt Wellington - May with Roger Hurd Left The Springs in sunshine on a day forecast to have showers, none evident and none at all in reality. Walked to the Saddle above Lenah Valley then up to the crest of the hill above Tolosa Park in a clearing for lunch. Returned using Lenah Valley Track from OHA track junction. A good leg stretch on a very good day for our 23 walkers. Frenchmans Cap - May with Alison Street Despite my plan to avoid crowds by walking mid-week and off season, we shared the huts with a school party of 11 for 2 of the 3 nights. However almost all the students were enjoying the experience, were cheerful and friendly and were very well supervised. The new section of the track to Frenchmans Cap leaves the old track about 1km past the Loddon bridge on top of a small rise. After crossing a creek, the new route contours around the N side of a ridge, gently climbing through open forest until it meets the old track again on the steep climb up through rainforest. Some of the new track is in excellent condition, but parts of it have 6 inches of sticky mud on the top, drainage is incomplete and it appears unfinished. The new route is a great improvement on the muddy swamps of the Sodden Loddens. It is pleasant walking and after 3 days of fine weather we still had dry boots. It rained on the last morning. An excellent track walk with reasonable weather, enthusiastic company, good huts and a bit of a rock scramble on the way to the top. It was windy, cloudy and cold on the summit so we took a photo and promptly departed. A highlight of the trip for me was sighting a platypus on land just before the Loddon bridge. Nierinna/Margate Rivulet - May with Jeanette Brown The still autumn weather helped to make for a great walk. The scenery was as varied as the topics of conversation. St Crispins Well - May with Dieter Buechner On a perfect day our group of 16 tackled the ups and downs of the Pipeline Track between Neika and St Crispins Well without anyone getting lost. Some might have upset tummies after tasting too many of the native pepper berries. Cape Bernier - May with Ruth Raward Very picturesque walk on a beautiful sunny day. Ten happy walkers, grateful to David Walsh for allowing us to walk through his property. Mount Stuart to Glenorchy – May with Ken Chilcott This was a new experience for 15 of the 18 walkers. After a bit of confusion arranging a car shuttle, we headed off from Mt Stuart, inspecting the mighty Lenah Valley quarry, then on towards the mountain. After morning tea we scaled Break Neck at a sedate pace then proceeded down the Lenah Valley track, up Old Hobartians track and on to the North South track, eventually emerging at the top of Tolosa Street. Along the way we were impressed with the stonework of an arched bridge and made the most of the photo opportunity. All agreed this is a great walk which should be programmed again.

JULY 2013 30Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) – Mar-Apr with Mark Nelson This was an international walk mainly in the Torres Del Paine National Park (NP). Chile and the glaciers NP in Argentina. The itinerary and booking process was organised through Adventures Unlimited, a local agency with extensive experience of walking in Patagonia. My role was to instigate the walk and round up a group within the HWC. We had individual and group meetings with Geoff Batten from Adventures Unlimited in preparation for the trip. We made our way independently to Sydney staying overnight in a hotel close to the airport and heading out together (though scattered around the plane) the next day. We transited Santiago on our way to Buenos Aires where we overnighted. There was some excitement when 7 of us were refused entry (Bob was on a British passport and blithely passed through customs) as we had not paid a reciprocity tax. We knew we had to pay such a tax imposed on Australians as pay back for a visa fee on Argentinians, but what we did not know is that this now had to be paid prior to entry to the country, and online. We were being threatened with expulsion. Another Australian, a Tango dance instructor from Melbourne and frequent visitor to Argentina, was also caught out. The day was saved when it was pointed out to the LAN representative that it is their responsibility to ensure that we had appropriate documentation to allow entry into the country we were being flown to and so they organised for their office to pay the tax on my credit card and issue us with receipts. We were up at 3.30am (not as bad as it sounds as we were still biologically in AEST) to catch a flight to El Calafate via Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. The distances in South America are big (3000 kms and 5½ hours to reach our destination. Unfortunately we were not permitted to exit the plane in transit in Tierra del Fuego although Geoff Morffew did make it off the plane! We picked up 2 hire cars (VW station wagons), nominated 2 drivers for each vehicle and headed off on the right side of the road into El Calafate. This town seems to be a Mecca for adventure touring with walks, climbs, kayaking etc advertised and provisioned for. We were travelling by car to Chile the next day so those who were not fully catered for in the refugios (NP huts in Chile) stocked up at the local supermarkets. Although Torres del Paine is a literal marathon distance from El Calafate as the condor flies it is 220kms by road. We headed off the next day through dry flat pampas country stopping every now and again to photograph the wildlife (guanacos, a type of llama, rheas, flightless birds just a little smaller than emus, and various raptors and scavengers). When we crossed the land border fresh food was confiscated by Chilean customs so there was a lot of banana eating going on! Our first refugio sat near the valley leading to the Torres del Paine (Paine towers). Paine is pronounced Pie-nee. Our first walk was to the towers. We had a sunny and still day. The towers were 3 granite columns stretching 2000m above our heads. It was agreed that this sight was worth the cost of the airfare on its own! This was typical of the walking from here on. Modest climbs at low altitude (200-800m) on scrub and mud free well graded tracks with lots of signs. The biota was enough to make anyone homesick with fagus, cushion plants and flowers betraying our common Gondwanaland origins. The other thing was witnessing the geological process of glaciation that is past in Tasmania but ever present in Patagonia with a vast low level ice shelf feed by 8 metres of annual precipitation. We carried overnight packs to allow us to stay in the refugio up in the valley. Our next day walk to the Valle Silencio (Silent valley) was denied by the ranger as only climbers with a permit were allowed further up the valley. We improvised a walk along the southern flanks of the Paine massif in delightful weather. I encourage you to look at my photographs posted on the HWC Facebook site to see how delightful. Our next walk was a beach walk and circuit at Lago (lake) Grey. This 20km glacial lake is fed by a 30km long glacier. Carved icebergs are pushed down the lake by the prevailing katabatic winds and strand in the shallows of the coarse gravel beach. Here they slowly

JULY 2013 31melt leaving the residual harder, deeper and intensely blue ice. We then returned to catch a catamaran to our next refugio after visiting Salto Grande (big waterfall) and surrounds. Our walk up the Valle Frances (French valley) was my favourite of the trip. Again fine, still weather, we passed still reflective lakes steadily climbing beside the river to the glacier where we witnessed a number of avalanches as the sun warmed it. We then followed a tributary into this extensively beech forested valley with an amphitheatre of sheer narrow and broad granite peaks. Imagine 270 degrees of Geryons that are 2 to 3 times taller. Even the view out of the valley was sublime. The next day we walked up along Lago Grey to Refugio Grey the most superior refugio we stayed at. It had leather Chesterfield couches for heaven sake. A general comment on the refugios. They were comfortable with 4-8 bunk beds to a room. Sleeping bags could be hired if you did not want to carry one. All meals, including cooked breakfast and takeaway lunches, could be catered for. Alcohol could be purchased on site. The showers were hot and strong. Some of us (Bob and Darren) went kayaking to the Grey glacier. The rest of us regretted we did not as the threatened wind and rain did not arrive. We than walked and ferried out and drove back to El Calafate sweating on the amount of fuel left in one of the vehicles. There are very few facilities on the Chilean side of the border. We had completed most of the ‘W circuit’ there but had failed to see a puma. El Calafate was our base for a wander around the waterbird sanctuary of Laguna Nimez, a boat trip on Lago Argentina to visit 3 glaciers and witness seracs (icefalls from the terminals of the glaciers) on another cloudless day, and a peak bag. El Calafate was good for steaks, ice-cream and red wine. Our next area to visit was El Chalten, a new town (1984) created by the Argentinians to prevent Chile claiming the area. It gave good access to the northern part of the Glacier National Park with Mt Fitz Roy (3400m) visible from our hostel. The walking here was bookended by beautiful days with overcast conditions on the mountains most days. The landscape was very similar to Torres del Paine with the standout being Cerro Torres, a 3100m column of sheer granite considered unclimbable until the invention of modern climbing equipment and techniques. The last day’s walk was in clear still conditions summiting at around 1590m on the hills to the south of the main range and paralleling it. We then had three days in a very quiet Buenos Aires (it was Easter) which had none of the festivities I would have expected at this time in a Catholic country. CYCLING
