AUGUST 2012 2Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225 Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters. Broken River Ski Club I am the Marketing Officer for Broken River Ski Club, which is a non-for-profit ski club that is maintained by it members. We are found in the Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand. .We offer ski weeks (6 night/7 day packages with 3 group lessons included in the price) at very reasonable rates. http://www.brokenriver.co.nz/prices/australian-ski-package/ We have a ski week with Telemark instructors (ski week includes complimentary 3 telemark lessons) - Level One of the NZSIA Telemark Instructor's Course - finishing off with a fun weekend of telemark events and clinics. http://www.brokenriver.co.nz/news-events/telemark-events/ We also run avalanche courses http://www.brokenriver.co.nz/prices/avalanche-courses/ Claire Newell Broken River Marketing Coordinator Milton Rotary Tramping Club Inc We are a non commercial group of unpaid volunteers, who have, over the past 26 seasons taken almost 16,000 people (mostly middle aged), on some of our most famous tracks and activities in the southern part of NZ. Many return year after year, to participate in another trip. As word has spread, we find that more and more Aussies are joining our activities, and a quite a number are from the Bush Walking Clubs. We often find that

AUGUST 2012 8members of your Bush Walkers Clubs are generally well suited to our trips, as most have done some backpacking and tramping. And we love Aussies !!

Our trips are not the "up Market" excellent guided trips, run by Commercial operators on some of our tracks,. We undertake the "Freedom Walks", where we use the very adequate Department of Conservation Huts, carry all our own gear & food (we supply food), and do our own cooking etc. We are a Tramping Club, and as such, as we operate on Public Lands, are required (by law) to run our trips at "cost recovery'' only, and hence can offer these adventures at very moderate cost. We do ask that participants become members of our Tramping Club, for the season of their trip(s) ($50), and also suggest an optional donation to our funds, so we are able to support the 2 Charitable organisations, that are the parent bodies of our Cub. We organize all Leaders, Transport, (Dunedin or where applicable Queenstown return) bookings, food., boats, etc.

We support community development programs in Asia and Africa with the goal of eliminating hunger and extreme poverty. In support of World Food Day, October 16, we run a campaign called hike4hunger and I'd like to invite you and the members of the Hobart Walking Club to be involved. hike4hunger aims to raise awareness about the global hunger crisis and to inspire people to take a small yet effective step towards ending global hunger. So what would we like you to do? We would love to have you involved! Our concept is simple, we ask people to create and lead a hike, and get your friends, family, colleagues and like-minded hikers on board. The hikes can be as long or short as you like and can be wherever you like. We have also planned two long hikes, which we call pilgrimages, from Canberra to Mount Kosciuszko and along the Kokoda Track, which are open to anyone who wishes to join. To be involved, all you have to do is register your interest with us, and be prepared to do a little fundraising.

AUGUST 2012 9By creating a hike you are choosing to walk in solidarity with the women, men and children who are fighting to end their own hunger. The money you raise will be used to support The Hunger Project programs in Africa that have been proven to be effective and sustainable in reducing poverty and hunger. In the past, we have raised over $120,000 for our programs in Malawi and Mozambique. This year, we hope to raise over $150,000. We would like to invite you and your group members to join us in achieving this goal by creating a hike or joining one of our existing hikes. Further information about who we are and what we do is located on our website. Please click on the links to learn more about The Hunger Project and hike4hunger. If you prefer to contact us directly, please email me at [email protected] or call us at 02 9222 9088. If you would like for us to meet with your members to tell you more about the campaign or the work we do, please contact us and we would be happy to set up a time to do so. We hope you will share our message and consider partnering with us to end global hunger. Sincerely, Cyra Patel Slide Show: The Himalayas. Presented by long-term mountaineer, expeditioner and wilderness photographer Grant Dixon. Grant is an off-the-beaten track expeditioner and his slides are always a treat. To be held at the Stanley Burbury Lecture Theatre, University of Tasmania. Wed 29 August 7.30 pm The evening will include refreshments. The event is a fundraiser for the Tasmanian National Parks Association, a not for profit organisation. This years event has a different focus to those of the past and will aim to improve/refine search communications [testing both the VHF and EDAC networks and a HF link] and also evaluate the search capabilities of volunteer groups in wilderness areas [in what could be quite snowy conditions]. People with expertise in cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing are especially encouraged to attend. Helicopter deployment of search teams is likely if the weather conditions allow. For more information please contact Malcolm Sherlock on 0417 653 548 or email [email protected] Circular Production Homes Volunteers are required to assist in preparation of circulars for mailing which is followed by a sociable cuppa with friends. The clubs take rostered turns to run the tows on the weekends during the ski season. Our tow duty dates are 11-12 August & 15-16 September. Come along and help operate the ski field should there be skiable snow, and enjoy sharing a sociable evening in our hut. Many hands make light work and can give you a chance to learn or brush up on your skiing. All welcome - non - skiers too. Contact me for further information. ph 6225 4216

AUGUST 2012 158 Aug – Wed Pelverata And Slippery Falls MM 15 km 50 m 5 hr Mary Jolly 6227 8506 Huonville/D'entrecasteaux My first intention was to lead this walk starting from Pelverata to the bottom of the Falls, then to climb up the steep scree and rock slope to the top of the ridge, to cross the 2 creeks with a short scrub bash in between and so to the top of Pelverata Falls. On my first reconnoitre we found and taped the remnants of the track from there to Slippery Falls. This section is an easy 1/2 hour walk. On a subsequent visit this week those creeks were running high (one impassable after snow melt) so --- I have decided to start from Van Morey Rd, Margate. From here a fire trail takes us across the plains to the top of Pelverta and then on the newly marked track to Slippery Falls. Parks are doing major repair work on the fire trail so it will be re-opened and hopefully in good condition by August. Both Falls should be spectacular at this time of the year. Recommended for prospectives who must book. Bring water and full foul weather gear. Pace Medium. Depart Fitzroy Gardens at 8.00 am or meet at Margate Hall, Van Morey Road, at 8.30 am. AUGUST 2012 26 28th Nov -2nd Dec Central Plateau, Mt Oana and Layatinna Hill MR Rupert Manners 6292 1310 I always like to have one wander on the Central Plateau and this year I plan to drive as far as we can towards Olive Lagoon and then to walk through to Layatinna Hill, Mt Oana and then through Chinamans Plains and back to Lake Ada. This will be off track walking and although the plateau is reasonably open we are likely to find bits of scrub here and there. It will require a car shuffle. Suitable for fit prospectives. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Numbers limit . Book with the leader by 15th November. Email [email protected] 13 – 16 December Cradle Area MM Rupert Manners 6292 1310 A year ago a good friend of ours broke her ankle in her garden. She was told it would take a year to heal and this will be the test. We will base camp in cabins in the Cradle area at Waldheim Chalets or Cosy Cabins and do day trips from there. The walks will include Hansons Peak and Twisted Lakes, Hounslow Heath, Crater peak and others. These are all relatively short walks of 4 – 5 hours duration and the pace will be slow. Suitable for fit prospectives. Full wet weather gear required. Numbers limit . Book with the leader by 1st December. Email [email protected] 26 Jan - 3 Feb 2013 Port Davey Kayak Mt Hean Paul Geeves Phone (Wk) 6233 3905 (H) 6231 5215 or email [email protected] If you like kayaking and want to climb some remote South West Mountains with day packs this is the trip for you. We will take a catamaran from Southport around to Port Davey with a maximum of 12 kayaks on board, landing at the hut site at Bond Bay. You will need sealed possum proof containers to stash food as we have two sorties. First paddle across Bond Bay and Kelly basin to within 1km of the coast, stow kayaks and walk across to coast and up to Wreck Bay to camp behind the shipwreck on the beach. It was quite an impressive site from Mt Hean a few years ago, half the ship is stuck in the sand, exposed at low tide. Day walk up Mt Hean, then return to kayaks, pick up more supplies from our stash, and head up the Davey river. There is wonderful camping at settlement point, and we will explore upstream as far as the Davey gorge. Also will go up the De Witt river for a day walk up a couple of unnamed but impressive peaks. After exploring as much as we like we return to civilization on the Catamaran. The intention is to leave Kent and companion(s) at the De Witt river to walk out over the Propsting Range, Piners Peak and Davey Sugarloaf to Port Davey Track and Scotts Peak, anyone wishing to accompany Kent see him. We will tow the remaining kayaks back to the rendezvous point. Walks Reports Victor’s Hut - May with Jim Baptist A good 6 1/2 hour leg stretch was enjoyed by 14 walkers. A cool autumn day with light drizzle for the last few minutes only. Native plants are re-establishing in the garden,

AUGUST 2012 27affording little in the way of views from the old hut site. It was interesting exploring around the area to imagine how it must have been when in use. Much improved access in recent times via the North-South Track. Cape Hauy - May with Trish Colles Pleasant weather and great views but so many steps! The new track is well made and wide and a credit to the hard work of the track builders. Nice to be out walking after several days of rain. Trestle Mountain - May with Roger Hurd Almost the perfect autumnal day with just an intermittent cool breeze on top to join us for lunch. Views to the south west obscured but otherwise excellent in each valley. Track in good condition after weekend downpour. Fishwalking on Crescent Bay/Mt Brown - May with Lee Douglas Seven walkers were treated to a clear blue day, frothy breathing blowholes and warm autumnal sunlight on orange doleritic boulders. The pace was relaxed, there was time for photography and laying about on sunwarmed rocks. Colin even had time to catch a sizeable mackeral which attracted few hitch hikers trying to get a feed (European Wasps). Thanks to my companions for a really enjoyable day out. New Norfolk - May with Dieter Buechner Our group of 12 just missed out on the usual colour display along the Derwent and Lachlan, but still enjoyed a pleasant walk in good company. Mt Wellington - May with Ken Chilcott Most walkers had not been on the new cycle track before so this was a new experience. From Rangeview Avenue, we walked the 2 km to the end of Lenah Valley Road then up to where the Old Hobart Track crosses the new cycle track. We headed north and downhill towards Glenorchy until a smidgen of disgruntlement was evident. We back tracked and eventually reached Junction Cabin for lunch. The forecast rain was proved correct, so our return on the Lenah Valley Track was a damp one. The day ended with a delightful visit to the Lady Franklin Museum where we viewed an exhibition of paintings and ceramics by local artists. Mt Giblin - Folded Range - Feb with Paul Geeves This was a combined trip with the Launceston and North West Walking Clubs. We also walked in with a party proceeding onto Greystone Bluff. On Day 1, we boated across Lake Gordon and climbed onto Mt Jim Brown before proceeding along the range to Mt Giblin and then dropping down to Jones Pass to camp. On Day 2 we attempted the Folded Range from the western side to get to the western summit of the range but ran out of time. On Day 3 we exited via the same route as we came in. Fine weather made for an enjoyable trip even though we didn’t quite get to our summit in the Folded Range. South East Peaks - June with Paul Geeves This was a trip to some small peaks on private land near Buckland. Peaks visited were: Mount Calvary, Mount Minnie, Mount Calder and Hodgsons Sugarloaf. The weather was mostly good with the occassional light shower and the walking was mostly open and easy. A good winters trip to some seldom visited peaks!
