    Safety engineering model

    - A well-known early study into safety management was undertaken by an

American engineer H.W Henrich in 1931 and is usually refers to as

    Henrichs dominion theory

    - He identies chain of e!ents and circumstances that ultimately lead toin"ury#1. $n!ironmental factors%. &ault of the indi!idual3. 'nsafe act or condition(. Accident). *gnorant- Henrich analyse a number of accidents and determine that ++, were due

unsafe acts and 1, due to unsafe conditions- hese ndings has formed a base of much subse/uent 0SH .- A similar nding emerged from a de!elo2ment of the safety engineering

    model S$45

    - *n this model de!elo2ed in the united states of America6 research conrmsthe similar balance of unsafe acts +),5 and unsafe conditions 1),5

    - 7esearchers further suggested that unsafe acts are best educated through

education and enforcement whereas unsafe conditions are best 2re!ent

through im2ro!ed engineering 2ractices and enforcement of these

2ractices- he addition of management and worker beha!iour to the basic model

include a focus on the following elements#1. $m2owerment of workers%. Ado2tion of 2rogressi!e labour 2ractices3. 8romotion of health and safety as a 2ersonal and organisational !alue

(. e!elo2ment of 2ositi!e worker attitude to focus on beha!iourmodication

). A22lication of ergonomic and human factor analysis- *n addition a focus of healthy in the work2lace was introduced6 this

introduced an em2hasis on 2rotecting and 2romoting healthy and safety in

    the work 2lace- :ey as2ects included#

    1. 8re!ention and control of occu2ational diseases and accidents%. e!elo2ment and 2romotion of healthy and safe work 2lace3. $nhancement of 2hysical and mental of social well-being of em2loyees(. $m2owerment of em2loyees to conduct social and economically

    2roducti!e li!es- hese early studies and de!elo2ments created a 2latform for the

emergence of more systematic a22roach to 0SH in the work 2lace
