It is always a gratifying experience teaching the MBA program at the HKU.
I am fascinated by the diversity and high calibre of the students. Their diligence and dedication to the course is not only a challenge but also the motivation to push the envelope for the design and delivery of the program. The HKU MBA is a reputable brand and I trust it will continue to attract the best talents.
It is indeed setting the standard for higher education locally as well as internationally.
Dr. Royce Yuen (China Marketing, Branding & Communications)
I have had many memorable moments teaching in the MBA program, including some pretty good laughs. But I think I most particularly enjoy when the tables are turned and I find myself not the teacher but the student, learning from the discussion and shared experiences of the class. Learning is a lifelong pursuit, and it is best done by questioning and collaborating with people who are more knowledgeable than we are. So thank you to all my students, who invariably teach me at least as much as I do.
Dr. David L. Bishop (Legal Environment in Asia, Business Ethics)
I walked into the Cyberport facility over the Christmas/New year period, as I wanted to check out the classroom for the course I would teach in January. It was mostly empty, but I noticed one person there. I thought she was part of the administrative team, but it turned out she was an MBA student. When I asked her why she was there, she answered she was preparing for the next term, and going through the readings for her courses. I then found out she was reading for my course. In a few words, I was very impressed by her dedication and eagerness to learn.
Dr. Nikhil Celly (Competitive Strategy)
Mr Maher Zarooni, the Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Swiss Bureau Projects Supply LLC in Dubai, UAE shared his vision of expanding his technology innovation. His significant contribution in Dubai and passion for entrepreneurship truly inspired students. Mr Miguel Lopes, Business Development Manager explained how the project works and how it has been implemented in Brazil.
Students found the project fascinating and actively participated in the Q & A session. Not only was it knowledge exchange about business expansion and innovative marketing through technology in the UAE, but also it definitely provides good networking opportunity and insight in career development to all MBA students, which would help to build corporate connections in the middle-east area.
On Feburary 21st, 2013, MBA programme launched the first
in a series of “Business Leader Series 2013”. The topic was
“Creating new business models, targeted marketing platforms
for brands and customizable experiences for mobile users”.
It was our great honour to listen to our first guests, Mr Maher
Zarooni and Mr Miguel Lopes and learn the invaluable lessons
in entrepreneurship.

On February 25, 2013, MBA students expe-rienced an enriching afternoon visiting the Hong Kong Airport Authority (HKAA). With over 30-year managing experience in aviation industry, Mr Henry Ma, General Manager of Airfield spoke to our students about the HKAA’s strategic planning, contribution to Hong Kong’s economy and obstacles to overcome. One of the witnesses at the “Kai-Tak” time before 1998, Mr Ma and many others did not expect today’s excessive demand. After the Chek Lap Kok airport started running, which contains two-runway system, it brought a significant growth in Hong Kong’s economy in terms of ca-reer opportunity and domestic consumption in various sectors i.e. Tourism and hospitality, and so on. Facing the drastic growth in need, HKAA released the 3-runway system proposal, which is under review by the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
On Feb 24th, 2013, full-time students celebrated the Chinese
New Year at the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day
of the first lunar month. Professors, MBA staff and students
gathered in traditional costume at Cyberport dining hall and
enjoyed the taste of Chinese food and the festive dessert –
Yuanxiao, or rice dumplings – meaning reunion. This tradition
denotes union, harmony and happiness for the MBA family.
Fantastic dancing and singing performance, impressive magic
show, as well as lucky draw and many games filled the night
with plentiful excitement.
04 Chinese New Year Night
Visit to Hong Kong International AirportMr Ma highlighted another competitive advan-tage of HKAA is that they pledged to be the world’s greenest airport. All cable vehicles operated on the airfield are electronic to reduce carbon emission. To improve energy efficiency, HKIA had replaced 5,500 lighting fixtures with light-emitting diode (LED) lights to save more than 530 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
The operation of an airport is about the “flow” of aircraft movement. How to keep it smooth? Mr Ma introduced the monitoring and con-trol room located at the restricted area. The operating team instructs each aircraft where to park after landing. Like the brain of airfield, the control room receives all information and takes appropriate actions. When there is time of emergency, all stakeholders will meet and make collective decision immediately.
Mr Henry Ma then took our group to the air cargo hub where the luggage is being allocated, distributed and delivered in a solely 100% au-tomatic system. The unique feature is that this system was built in vertical format (meaning luggage were transported vertically) because
there is not enough space, which is one of the biggest obstacles of HKAA’s development. He also showed the technology of RFID (radio frequency identification) – reading chip in dif-ferent dimensions. It had significantly improved the performance. The fastest time to obtain luggage through transfer passengers through HKIA’s baggage handling system has reduced to 50 minutes. HKIA is one of the first airports to begin introducing RFID technology, which it operates in parallel with a barcode-based system. Students found the visit absolutely fascinating by learning the work of HKIA.

Entrepreneurs, investors and business people with sector-specific experience bring a real-world perspective to student projects and act both as a “reality check” and as a source of potential networking opportunities. During each session, Industry experts offer a generous amount of time to discuss frameworks and to brainstorming ideas.
As part of this programme, students undertake 10 days of trip across South East Asia to study small and big enterprises which have thrived due to idea generations, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Syllabus highlights: At the end of term 1, groups have worked on the framework matrix of the BusinessLab system, experienced dynamic brainstorming sessions and active discussions on real cases. During Term 2, groups conceptualize their idea (product, service, company…) and their strategic approach.
Finally on Term 3 the teams refine their proposals and have the opportunity to do a sequence of presentations to different experts who provide valuable input and ongoing reality-checks. On the final session, all teams have the opportunity to present their final project to a selected jury that carefully evaluates the concept under a specific parameter matrix. A diploma of participation is given to all students and a prize awarded to the best project.

The importance of such programme for a Business School: Dr. Maurice Tse, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, remarked, “business schools and the business community are strategic partners as corporations look at MBA programmes to provide the talent pool critical to future growth and sustained success. At HKU MBA, we help students connect with the markets and also market themselves. Therefore, we continuously introduce new elements to the Programme, such as the Business Lab, that bring in up-to-date practical skill sets and academic knowledge relevant to the ever-changing business world. We feel encouraged by the recognition from the international and regional communities.”
From a student perspective:• learn how to articulate concepts and how
to package them together into a business proposal
• actively engage in discussions on different business-related topics
• interact with top industry professionals (guest speakers) and perform the “acid test” on your projects
• receive a distinctive diploma of participation (for all members / teams) that can be used in your CV, LinkedIn, etc.
• earn prizes and recognition• develop problem solving & framing
capabilities• improve presentation skills (every class
involves group presentations and class discussions)
• learn to work with ongoing iteration models• provide a supportive communal environment
both in class and outside / online• all classes require full participation from all
participants
Last fall, HKU MBA added a new non-credit module, the “Business
Lab”, which helps students to develop their entrepreneurship
skill. This parallel module was facilitated by Mr Pedro Eloy, who
is the course coordinator. Mr Eloy is director of New Media and
Information Technology at Fung Group and he actively participates
in various speaking engagement in topics of IT marketing and
social media.
What is the BusinessLab? The Business Lab programme provides a unique opportunity for students and alumni to pursue their passion for entrepreneurship. The aim of this module is to incubate the development and consolidation of business concepts by HKU MBA students whilst using all the knowledge and tools learnt throughout the MBA programme.
New Entrepreneurship Element to HKU MBA
05“Being an entrepreneur requires critical thinking on many different areas such as marketing, strategy, risk analysis, cash flow modeling… The Business Lab is essentially a mini-MBA on its own!”

Teaching design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), while pursuing a Doctor of Busi-ness Administration at Polytechnic University, Chris Yin strives to succeed along his career path—to merge business and design.
Chris graduated in 2011 from the HKU MBA part-time programme. After working at brand consultancies for many years, he decided to pursue an MBA to be more competitive in the design industry.
“My HKU MBA gives me more credibility in my current role.” Chris started his teaching posi-tion in Fall of 2012. Even though this was not a direct result from the MBA, he believes what he learnt will help students to prepare them-selves for future career advancement or start their own companies. ‘Business Practices for Graphic Design’ is a course that Chris currently teaches at SCAD.
The HKU brand name and campus location were a few reasons why Chris chose HKU for his MBA. He selected the part-time programme because it helped to expand his professional network without gicing up his full-time job. Chris learned a lot about working with other people and made a lot of friends from the programme.
In 2012 fall, Dina and her business partner accomplished a road-trip from Shenzhen to Shanghai. It was a combination of attending an award-winning announcement dinner and speak-ing engagement at a university in Shanghai. Therefore, they decided to visit many cities in Southern part of China, i.e. Shantou, Xiamen, Ningde, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanjing, to see how people’s life have been changed compared to two years ago. Dina believes the understanding of local culture and change in living style will lead to success in product design and continuous development. Throughout the road-trip, extensive research data had been collected. And they used dif-ferent measure to draw the massive trend for the past 5-6 years, which helped to track the changing behavior and impact.
Chris is currently working on a DBA at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His experience at HKU made him want to learn more about business. HKU MBA professor, Dr Royce Yuen, is one of the prominent alumni of the DBA at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Chris took full advantage of the programme and took part in all the field trips available. Both the Europe and Shanghai trips provided a sense of reality for MBA Students. In his current teachin role, he tries to incorporate field trips for stu-dents to learn more about the real world.
Combining his experience in both business and design is a future goal. He believes that there will be more opportunities for people that can bridge the gap between design and business. He hopes to teach in both business design schools in the future.
Giving some advice to the MBA seekers, Chris feels that “prospective students need to know exactly what they want when going into the pro-gramme.” An MBA does not guarantee a job… You can go through the motions, but without knowing why you are getting an MBA, it can be useless.”
Entrepreneurship, It’s About Time!
Merging Business and DesignBeing an innovation entrepreneur, you need to
be at the very beginning of new trend always. Dina strives to high quality of design to stay ahead of the competition. TECA Studio patents a lot of their innovation. After going through the legal procedures, products can then get the patent approved. Therefore, most of the products were patented. The other asset is the intellectual property of the business, which pro-vide solutions to clients and introduce a better product to the market.
“Not only the products to be beautiful, but a bet-ter product to the clients.” Dina stated her vision which drives her to pursue the market leader in the industry. “You should look forward to new challenges.” Clearly, Dina is able to overcome the difficulties and be curious of new trends.
With the entrepreneurship background, Dina was impressed by the international component of HKU MBA. Interacting with people from different backgrounds led her business into a
06
more multicultural environment. She was happy to take her MBA in Hong Kong where is the business- and finance-driven region, that also make an easy access to mainland China, India and other countries. Combining the London experience, HKU MBA helped Dina to further operate her British company.
“It keeps surprising me! Running a business in this side of the world has been a very enriching experience” Dina speaks frankly that years ago they moved to China for manufacturing reason originally, but things has changed. More highly-educated and design talents rises and it flourished a significant pool of new ideas and insights, which becomes even the better reason to stay.
Dina and her team believe that design and innovation is about exploring and identifying new method, which cannot be found in the patent. Individual should carry the combination of talent as well as to be open-minded, be hard-working, work well with people and love what they do. Education in design, engineering and business would be highly desired.
Now it is the good time to be in entrepreneur-ship. “I encourage whoever wants to follow their entrepreneurs’ aspiration should start their own business; now it is easier, for inves-tors across the world.” Dina commented that MBA is a great education to direct into both corporate and entrepreneurship. It won’t be in much different if graduates remain in their medium- size companies. “
Dina Guth just came back from Tokyo. She will fly to Europe in May, then to US.

met Dr Simone Ahuja, the founder
of Blood Orange, a marketing and

innovation and emerging markets in

mindset of transforming marketing
strategy.
Dr Ahuja shared the six principles
used by today’s top jugaad innovators
and showed case studies in videos to
explain how these principles shown
in action. The 6 principles of jugaad
innovation that we have identified as
being common to jugaad innovators
worldwide are: Seek opportunity in
adversity, do more with less, think and
act flexibly, keep it simple, include the
margin, and follow your heart.
The jugaad approach is flexible, frugal
and democratic: it is often bottom-up
rather than top-down and involves a
much larger number of people beyond
those who are typically taske d with
doing innovation in corporations. The
strength of jugaad innovators lies in
their ability to get more from less,
experiment continually, and creatively
engage people who are typically left
out of the innovation process.
Dr Ahuja encouraged the audience
