COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe purpose of the AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth’s surface. Students learn to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human socioeconomic organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications. Areas of study include population, migration, culture, languages, religion, ethnicity, politics, agriculture, industrialization, development, and cities and urban land use.

Additional Comments:

Students are expected to read the text and participate in class discussions. There is additional reading including case studies and other supplemental material. The pace of the class is rigorous in order to cover the large amount of content. Students who have a strong background in social science are best suited for the class. Students will develop critical thinking skills to help them on the AP Human Geography Exam.

Eleventh graders study the major turning points in American history in the twentieth century. Students consider the major social problems of our time and trace their causes in historical events.

AP English Language and Composition

COURSE DESCRIPTIONAP English Language is a class that marries the junior-level American literature curriculum to the college-level non-fiction composition curriculum. Students will read approximately 8 major works of American literature in a multiplicity of genres and will also read a wide-variety of non-fiction work, spanning from the beginning of America to today.  The class emphasizes close reading, critical thinking, analytical writing, the structure of argument, and rhetorical analysis. Students will write dozens of in-class essays as well as multi-draft essays in order to improve writing. The class is designed to prepare students for the rigor and responsibilities of being a college student and will provide support for those students who are doing all of the work to the best of their abilities. Students are expected to take the AP English Language and Composition exam given in May.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONTwelfth grade Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition is a college level course designed to meet the senior requirement for students who have achieved a level of reading and writing skills generally expected of first year university and college students. Students will be prepared for advanced or more specialized English course in college. Students will read major works of English and world literature in each literary genre (poetry, drama, fiction) with an emphasis on critical thinking and analytical writing. COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course in a non-calculus based introduction to statistics exposing students to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, observing patterns and departures from patterns; planning a study, deciding what to measure and how to measure it; anticipating patterns in advance, introducing probability and simulation; and statistical inference, confirming models for explanations of patterns. This course is designed for all college bound students, but it is specifically applicable for those students who will major in the social sciences or humanities. COURSE DESCRIPTIONAP Biology is the equivalent of a college introductory biology course taken by biology majors. We use a college-level textbook and materials. The expectation is that students will spend (and schedule time for spending) 1-2 hours of work outside of the class every weekday and two to four hours per weekend studying material we have learned or preparing for upcoming material in lecture or lab. This course is aligned with and conforms to the standards instituted by the College Board for all AP courses and covers all topics in the AP Biology Course Description.

Thus, there are some expectations that we need to make clear for you before the school year begins:

AP courses are rigorous and demanding, therefore students may be required a great level of time commitment (i.e., summer work is often a requirement and students may be required to complete an average of 2-6 hours of homework per day). Success in AP courses may require that students give up school or outside activities, interests, and/or entertainment. Students are expected to make a commitment to stay in AP courses for the entire year, regardless of the grade they earn in the first semester. Thus, students in AP classes are normally NOT permitted to drop the class once the school year has started. Failure to complete summer work, the difficulty level of the course, the personality of the instructor, a poor grade in the class, and/or stress factors are NOT reasons for removal from an AP class after the year has started. In the event that students encounter difficulties with the AP course content, parents are encouraged to conference with AP teacher(s) about student’s academic progress and ensure that students attend tutoring, additional meeting times, study sessions and practice exams outside of class.

Como padres deben estar orgullosos de su estudiante y reconocer la importancia de tomar clases rigorosas para que los estudiantes esten preparados para la universidad. Su estudiante quiere ir al colegio entonces a decido inscribirse en estos cursos. Las clases de aptitud universitaria son diseñadas para enseñar a los estudiantes como sobresalir en las clases universitarias. Por lo tanto, estos cursos requieren muchas horas de trabajo y tarea. Los maestros las enseñan de manera acelerada y a un nivel universitario. Esto significa que los estudiantes tienen que organizar su tiempo para cumplir todos sus trabajos y mantener calificaciones altas. Clases de AP son rigorosas y tienen expectativas universitarias, requieren un compromiso de mucho tiempo (tarea de verano, vacaciones y 2 a 6 horas de tarea diariamente) Para sobresalir en clases de AP estudiantes a veces tienen que suspender algunas actividades despues de escuela. Estudiantes que estan inscritos en clases de AP normalmente no se les permite dejar la clase despues de que empiece el año escolar. El no completar la tarea de verano, la dificultad de la clase, la personalidad del maestro/a, calificacion baja en la clase, o estres, no son razon suficiente para que mi hijo/a se salga de una clase de AP. En el evento de que los estudiantes tengan dificultad con el contenido y trabajos de la clase; padres tendran una conferencia con el maestro/a del estudiante para hablar de la situacion, sobre el progreso academico del estudiante en clase y asegurase que el estudiante se reporte a tutoria.
