I would like to welcome you back to school this year. I am honored to be chosen to join the Hines community as Principal. I’m just as thrilled to begin the new school year while continuing the tradition of excellence that has been established here.

Everyone is energized and thrilled about the upcoming school year! Our number one focus is student achievement! We are dedicated to providing every student with a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment. Our expectations and goals for all students are high and together as a team we will work to help all students obtain their goals. During my first few weeks here (and truly the entire year), I will continue to listen, observe and meet with families to identify what works well and what things that although working, could really be improved upon. th, which is a FULL DAY of school. Please read through the information included in

this packet and take note of the following announcements and initiatives that will impact our students for the upcoming school year:

1. Backpack Peoria and Parent University Kick-Off We have been busy promoting and hope you have already heard about this exciting event. If not, Peoria Public Schools is teaming up with Dream Center Peoria for Backpack Peoria. Families are encouraged to visit the Dream Center Peoria on Saturday, July 28, 2012 (714 Hamilton Blvd # 200) between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Families will have access to community resources, students will receive backpacks filled with school supplies, medical providers will be available for medical and dental screenings, school and District staff will be on hand to answer registration or other questions. We will also kick-off Parent University just prior to the school year starting. Parent University is a resource for parents and guardians that will provide trainings and information throughout the school year on topics not only associated with education, but also community resources. This year, we are excited to welcome Dr. Steve Perry as our guest speaker for this special event. Please see the flyer included in this packet to learn more about this event and Dr. Perry. 2. Registration Only new students and incoming freshmen need to pre-register for the 2012-2013 school

year. Registration dates for these students will be August 13th from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and August 14th from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the student's new school. Families of sixth grade students may also turn in physical exam paperwork during this time. Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to have medical requirements documented at the school on the first day of classes.

On August 20th, 2012 (the first day of school full day for all students), each child will be sent home with a registration packet that will include an emergency contact form, photo release form, internet usage form, District calendar/handbook and information from the student's teacher and school. Families are asked to read through, fill out and sign the forms in this packet and return them to the student's school by August 24th.

3. Pay School Fees Online Skyward Family Access allows families to pay school fees online. This year, Family Access will be the only option to make online payments. If your family has not signed up for Family Access, call our Accountability and Research Department at 672-6761 to sign up today! Once your family has a username and password, you can login to Family Access by visiting www.psd150.org and clicking on the Family Access icon in the top right corner. Once logged in, families can make payments, check grades, update contact information and more. You can learn more about making payments by reading the information included in this back to school packet. One change to look forward to, is that you will soon be able to pay for multiple students in one transaction!

4. Compass Learning Many families have used Compass Learning, an online resource for students to

work on skills that have been identified as needing improvement and/or accelerating in order to keep the learning process going, even when the student is not at school. School computer labs were open this summer and many students participated in Compass Learning activities. This program is also used in our classrooms throughout the school year. It is a fun, interactive tool to help your child improve or advance in different content areas. Compass Learning links to each of our students testing scores (NWEA) to challenge them in the most appropriate areas. All students and parents should have separate logins. You can learn more about Compass Learning on a separate information sheet included in this packet.

5. Internet Essentials – We know that many students and their families would like to have Internet service at home so they can do homework, access Compass Learning, and maybe even look for a job or research a hobby. We believe the Internet can be an important part of your child’s education. That’s why we want to make sure you know about a new program provided by Comcast called Internet Essentials.

If you have at least one child receiving free or reduced price school lunches, your family may qualify for this fast, affordable home Internet service for the new school year. Internet Essentials costs just $9.95 per month (plus tax). For participating families, there are no price increases, no activation fees or equipment rental fees. In addition, you can buy a low-cost computer for just $149.99 (plus tax) and receive free Internet training — online, in print and in person. 6. Career & Technical, International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP) and AVID Classes

Peoria Public Schools is excited to once again offer a career and technical education program for high school students and a Growing Up Ready component at all middle schools (allowing students to increase their awareness of different career areas for them to consider). High school students participating in the career and technical program will have a choice of construction trades, engineering, electrical, health sciences or manufacturing. This year, students from all high schools have access to these programs!

Charter Oak Primary, Mark Bills Middle, Sterling Middle and Trewyn K-8 continue their pursuit to be recognized IB schools. Each enters its second year of a four year process in the pre-authorization phase. Previously, IB was only offered at the high school level. All high schools will again offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Additional staff members were trained over the summer to teach these courses that can challenge and give students an edge as they look to enroll in college. Finally, Manual Academy, Peoria High School, Richwoods High School and Lincoln Middle School will offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classes to a select group of students. AVID allows students and parents to commit to the challenge of a rigorous curriculum, offer them the tools they need to travel the college preparatory pathway, and become more involved in school activities. Approximately 200 students have committed to participate in the program this school year.

There are many other changes I am excited about in our District for the upcoming year, but unfortunately, there is not enough space to list those in detail. So briefly, here are some additional opportunities that we are offering: 1) continued expansion of social emotional supports, such counselors, psychologists and social workers, for students District-wide. 2) continued expansion/implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) in every school. 3) a Freshmen Orientation for all incoming freshmen prior to the first day of school (call your home high school if your family has not already received information). 4) a Reading Buddies Program that is seeking volunteers from throughout the community to work with third grade students throughout the District that are not on grade level in reading (more information is available at www.psd150.org under the A Classroom is Calling link). Last year, nearly 450 Reading Buddy volunteers helped approximately 250 3

rd grade students become better

readers. Please consider volunteering and help us expand this program. Ways to stay informed:

• I encourage you to visit our website frequently for updates throughout the District. • We will also continue Remarkable Times, a weekly email newsletter to send out to all families registered

with an email on Family Access. A form will be provided in the First Day Registration Packet for your family to sign up, if you are not already registered for Family Access.

• Each school, as well as the District, frequently sends out Skylert phone messages with updates for parents and families, using the phone number listed on Family Access.

Dr. Perry is in a hurry to transform the educational experience for all children.

Born into poverty, he believes that success in life is determined by where you end, not where you start. It’s this philosophy that inspired him, early on, to

transform the lives of poor and minority children by providing them with access

to a college education, and more recently, has inspired him to bring his ideas and passion to children everywhere, no matter what their socioeconomic or

academic background.

In 1998 Dr. Perry founded ConnCAP, the Connecticut Collegiate Awareness Program, at Capital Community College. For a

period of six years, the program sent 100% of its low-income first-generation graduates to four-year colleges. Then in 2004 Capital Preparatory Magnet School was established in Hartford, Connecticut’s lowest performing district, and since its

inception that school, too, has sent 100% of its graduates to four-year colleges!

Capital Prep has been recognized by US News & World Report as one of America’s Best High Schools. Dr. Perry’s uncompromising, no-excuses approach to designing the ideal educational experience for children led to his being featured on

CNN’s documentary “Black in America” and from there to an official role as a weekly education contributor to the network.

His “Perry’s Principles” and other reportage, regularly seen on both Anderson Cooper 360 and American Morning, tackles the most contentious issues being debated in American education.

Dr. Perry is a columnist for Essence magazine, and the author of the bestselling self-published book Man Up! He is also a

nationally sought after speaker who has appeared on hundreds of radio and television broadcasts and at education and

cultural forums around the country.

In his forthcoming Push Has Come to Shove, Perry will spare no sacred cows in describing what steps need to be taken to

ensure that all American schools, whether urban or suburban, deliver a first-rate education to our kids – the kind of schooling

that will return the United States to the top of the global education rankings.

Dear Parent/Guardian, Peoria Public Schools has partnered with Compass Learning – Odyssey to provide students with access to a powerful online tool that provides academic resources for students. This summer, we opened computer labs at schools throughout the District to allow students to take part in this exciting resource. If you do not know about this program or have not logged in with your student, students and parents can access Compass Learning using any computer with high-speed internet access. If you do not have high-speed internet access at home, we encourage you to take advantage of computer access available through the Peoria Public Library or other locations, or look into Comcast’s Internet Essentials program. Every student has a username and password for Compass Learning/Odyssey. Once students log in to the system, there will be activities available to the student based on his/her grade level. Students in grades 2-8 will also have a “learning path” identified through Spring 2012 NWEA scores, which will be updated with each administration of NWEA (three times per year). Activities should be completed in the order listed and students should strive to attain 80% correct on each assignment. For assignments with a score of less than 80%, a code will be provided. Students can restart these assignments by typing in the code in the “Activity Finder” box. By participating in Compass Learning, your student will continue his/her learning over the summer and when school is not in session. Compass Learning is also used in our classrooms throughout the year. In addition to student access, login and password information for parents is also available. Paying Student Fees Through Family Access

Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, Family Access began accepting online payments for required and

optional fees.

Required fees include course fees for high school students, PE uniforms for high school students, student ID,

and the student handbook for high school students. Certain fees are determined by courses in which students are

enrolled.

Optional fees vary from school to school, and may include publication fees, yearbook fee, activity pass fees,

PTO dues, etc.

Parents must be enrolled in Family Access to pay fees online. If you have not signed up for Family Access, you

can obtain an application by following the link provided below.
