Like all insects, butterflies have three main

parts:1. Head

2. Thorax

3. Abdomen

The Importance of Wings

• Butterfly wings are covered with scales and each one is a single color

• The wing color sometimes protect butterflies from being eaten

This tasty Viceroy butterfly has wings that make it look

like the yucky tasting Monarch

• Five main species in Loudoun County:– Swallowtail– Whites and Sulphurs– Gossamer-wing– Brush-footed– Skippers
