Distinctive home and garden pieces that blend functionality, style andco-friendly features are in demand nationwide but can be hard to source.

That South Texas is home to a growing eco-luxury business is perhaps onef the regions most pleasant surprises.Five years ago, John and Duang Hanesworth converted a former body

hop near downtown San Antonio into Big Grass, an indoor and outdoorasis showcasing sustainable, handcrafted furniture and dcor from around

he world. Word about Big Grass has steadily spread, turning the Hanes-orths business into one of the regions most popular destinations for

istinctive and sustainable home and garden products. We established Big Grass to promote sustainable lifestyles and culturaliversity through handmade furniture, accessories and many other original

items that we discover on our travels and bring home to San Antonio, JohnHanesworth said. We select pieces that are made to last, that give indoor

nd outdoor spaces a truly original feel, and we have been building a loyalustomer base in San Antonio, Austin and i ncreasingly, the Hill Country.

Much of the Big Grass product collection isinspired by bamboo, a plant that regeneratesquickly, has a higher tensile strength thanome steel alloys and is naturally appealing to

the touch and to the eye. In Duang Hanes-worths native Thailand, bamboo is an integralpart of ever yday life, from food to construc-

tion, and is the source for the durable, elegantfurniture that Big Grass showcases. The Hanes-worths work directly with Thai artisans whoemploy techniques that have been handeddown for generations to create furniture linesthat cannot be found elsewhere in the United

tates. The Big Grass furniture collection includes

bedroom sets, dining and living room sets, bars and seating arrangements for outdoorrooms. In recent months, Big Grass haspotlighted two indoor furniture lines, the

    traditional Sabaicollection and the Loiline,

which stands out with its sleek, Scandinavianlook. Because of the Hanesworths direct rela-tionship with the Loiand Sabaiproducers, BigGrass is the only U.S. source for t hese productsand is considering making both furniture linesavailable to other retailers.

Big Grass features an array of other eco-friendly, handcrafted pieces that distinguishthis independent retailer from both big-namefurniture stores and more traditional interiordesign businesses. Reclaimed teakwood cart-wheels, Burmese stone rice mills and Laotian

rice storage baskets are among the originalcultural artifacts on display. Big Grass alsooffers versatile dcor items ranging from table
