REFLECTION

Parables provoke interpretation. They make us wonder what Jesus was referring to and what he really meant.

At times, he is quite vague about the real meaning and his disciples are left wondering.

Think, for example, of the parable of the Sower, which Jesus must later explain (Mark 4: 13

-20). At other times, like the instances we have in this gospel reading, Jesus is quite explicit:

he tells his hearers that he is talking about the kingdom of God. Even so, he must still explain his meaning to the disciples when he is alone

with them. Unfortunately, Mark does not report for us what interpretation Jesus places on these parables. In the Old Testament, the

imagery of the reign of God had an apocalyptic dimension; it was to come to fullness at the

end times, when the wicked would be punished and the faithful vindicated. Only then would

there be a new heaven and a new earth. The message in Mark’s Gospel, however, is

quite different. Jesus proclaims that the kingdom of God has already begun.

It is among us now. ‘This is the time of fulfilment. The kingdom of God is at hand’ (Mark

1:15). Like the seed planted, it takes root and grows mysteriously into something much

larger than itself. The kingdom or reign is a gracious gift from God brought near in Christ

and demanding a response of faith from those who recognise the truth of his word.

The kingdom offers a challenge; like the man who sowed the seed, we must be ready to cooperate in God’s work when the harvest

time comes. • The kingdom or reign of God refers to the

time when God’s will is done. What signs of the growth of the kingdom of God can we discern in our world today? Where do we see God’s

will being done?

• What things do you think hinder the growth of the kingdom today?

• How are we called to cooperate in God’s work? What must we do?

NGA TAPUWAE PILGRIMAGE Auckland Diocese are planning a Northland historical pilgrimage, Nga

Tapuwae (sacred footsteps) for any parish or group or community who would like to participate. All parishes are cordially invited to get

a group of people together, to travel the road, hear the stories and remember our Catholic roots in Aotearoa New Zealand. This will

occur from 6th through 9th January 2022 culminating in the celebration of the remembering of Bishop Pompallier’s first Mass at Totara Point in 1838. Start planning your group of young adults (20 years and above), hire a van and gather some chaperones now, and

we will keep you updated with details of what package we will provide for your group. Formal announcement and registrations of Nga Tapuwae will occur in June 2021 and registration packs will be provided prior to travel. Please contact the parish office if you are

interested. Email [email protected]

According to Right to Life (RTL), The Minister of Health, the

Hon Andrew Little, supports changing the guidelines to allow more human beings to be made available for scientific experimentation.

RTL states that In March, the Minister directed the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology [ACART] to consider

recommending that the guidelines be extended from 14 days to 28 days for experimenting on human embryos. The Minister was quoted

in the media as stating, “If we want that research to happen and want to have the medical and health benefits to go with it, then we

need to change the guidelines.” Right to Life is opposed to all experimentation on human embryos and their destruction.

It highlights commendable examples of Austria, Germany, Russia and Turkey which prohibit such violations of human rights.

FIT FOR MISSION

107TH WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS & REFUGEES (WDMR) Sun. 26 September. The theme chosen by the Holy Father, Towards and Ever Wider “We”, echoes his appeal that, in the future, “we will think no longer of ‘them’ and ‘those’, but only ‘us’” (Fratelli Tutti, 35). To

journey together towards this year’s WDMR. The Migrants & Refugees Section is once again providing a communication campaign. It begins with Pope Francis’s Message, which pays special attention to the care of the family and the common home in order to bring about an even

more encompassing and welcoming world. For more Information check out the website https://migrants-refugees.va/ In the months

leading up to September 26, the Migrants & Refugees Section is happy to receive written or multimedia stories, videos and photos from local

churches & other Catholic institutions whose pastoral care for the most vulnerable demonstrates their shared commitment “towards an

ever wider ‘we’”. Materials can be sent to [email protected]
