THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The pop tabs keep rolling in! It’s always a joyful surprise when I see a big bag in my mailbox, or see some that have been dropped in the little green bag in the hutch outside the church office. This is a continuing project of our St. Charles Golden K Kiwanis Club to help maintain the Ronald McDonald House that was re-cently built near Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. It’s especially delightful to know that classes of school children are col-lecting and donating them to the cause. I can’t think of a project that is so painless as taking the tab off a pop or soup can, and collecting them on the kitchen counter, that does so much good. I know one tab isn’t much, but when we put them all together – wow!Just want you to know your contributions, large or small, are all so appreciated!!! Thank you!!!~Pat Kitner

DEPosition – by the Rev. David Pattee, senior pastorIn some ways, it’s hard to believe that I’ve been with you for six months. It seems like I just got here, and there are still so many things that feel new.

In other ways, though they may be few, these first months have been intense, and I am craving some time away for rest and play. So, I’m off to Oregon and family there, with excursions to visit friends in Door County and in Los Angeles also planned before I return to a regular schedule here at the church on August 1.

While I’m gone, Pat Kitner will continue to be available to you for pastoral care concerns and will be the preacher on July 17, 24 and 31. Bill Nagy will preach on July 10, and will be avail-able as back-up to Pat for pastoral care, should the need arise.

It is a joy to be settled with you, and to be confident and relaxed in taking time off, knowing that you will be well served and cared for while I’m gone.

In case you’re wondering, Sugar will be at home in Geneva, with a young friend (biped) moving in to take care of her for the month.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Dave

A special thank you to Nancy Noonan and Celtic Custom for providing the embroidery on our baptismal blankets

- they are beautiful!

September 16th: THE HOUSE OF MIRTH (1905) by Edith Wharton; discussion at the home of Janet Zohorsky A bestseller when it was originally published nearly a century ago, Wharton’s first literary success was set amid the previously unexplored territory of fashionable, turn-of-the-century New York society, an area with which she was intimately familiar. The tragic love story reveals the destructive effects of wealth and social hypocrisy on Lily Bart, a ravishing beauty. Her downfall begins with a romantic indiscretion, intensifies with an accumula-tion of gambling debts, and climaxes in a maelstrom of social disasters. The House of Mirth reveals Wharton’s compelling gifts as a storyteller and her clear-eyed obser-vations of the savagery beneath the well-bred surface of high society. Made into a successful film (2000), starring Gillian Anderson. November 18th: THE BOOK OF DANIEL (1971) by E. L. Doctorow; discussion at the home of Carol LudemannThe central figure of this novel is a young man whose parents were executed for conspiring to steal atomic secrets for Russia. His name is Daniel Isaacson, and as the story opens, his parents have been dead for many years. He has had a long time to adjust to their deaths. He has not adjusted. It is a book rich in characters, from elderly grandmothers of immigrant culture, to covert radicals of the McCarthy era, to hippie marchers on the Pentagon. It is a book that spans the quarter-century of American life since World War II. It is a book about the nature of Left politics in this country—its sacrificial rites, its peculiar cruelties, its humility, its bitterness. It is a book about some of the beautiful and terrible feelings of childhood. It is about the nature of guilt and innocence, and about the relations of people to nations.January 13th: A GREAT DELIVERANCE (1988) by Elizabeth George; discussion at the home of Denise Dojka To this day, the low, thin wail of an infant can be heard in Keldale’s lush green valleys. Three hundred years ago, as legend goes, the frightened Yorkshire villagers smothered a crying babe in Keldale Abbey, where they’d hidden to escape the ravages of Cromwell’s raiders. Now into Keldale’s pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an axe in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father’s headless corpse. Her first and last words were “I did it. And I’m not sorry.”

2016-2017Novel Approaches

March 10th: EUPHORIA (2014) by Lily King; discussion at the home of Tony and Donna GiamberdinoWinner of the 2014 New England Book Award for Fiction A Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award A Best Book of the Year for: New York Times Book Review, Time, NPR, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Newsday, Vogue, New York Magazine, Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, The Guardian, Kirkus Reviews, Amazon, Publishers Weekly, Our Man in Boston, Oprah.com, Salon. Euphoria is Lily King’s nationally bestselling breakout novel of three young, gifted anthropologists of the 1930s caught in a passionate love tri-angle that threatens their bonds, their careers, and, ultimately, their lives. Inspired by events in the life of revolutionary anthropologist Margaret Mead, Euphoria is “dazzling ... sus-penseful ... brilliant...an exhilarating novel.”—Boston GlobeMay 12th: A MAN CALLED OVE (2013) by Fredrik Backman; discussion at the home of Dave and Marilyn SchaveMeet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict rou-tines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and acciden-tally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. A feel-good story…Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others.

Inspiring Rabbis 2016Menachem CohenMitziut Jewish Community and The Night Ministry | Chicago, Illinois | 47 years oldIndependent | Hebrew Seminary: A Rabbinical School for Deaf and HearingMenachem Cohen joined the Youth Outreach Team in 2006 and has brought his ability to build relationships and find creative strategies to engage young people we serve to the homeless youth he encountered in a safe, nonjudgmental way. Inclusive, kind and relatable are words often used to describe him. Helping to restore hope in the lives of young people who’ve felt cast aside and invisible has been his passion since day one. It is Menachem’s ability to connect with youth and adults on the street and provide leadership, training and awareness to community stakeholders that has allowed him to establish a strong presence within the homeless provider community and be seen as a trusted adult youth can depend on. His kilt and beard make him unmistakable and impossible to miss. Homeless youth have a friend in him. They can get basic needs met through him. He works to provide comfort and safety when there is none. He embodies the faith and the work of rabbi and is an inspiration to all.— Allison McCann-Stevenson

Friends, please see below the wonderful honor bestowed on Menachem with the Night Ministry.  We have worked closely with him through service in the Lakeview neighborhood and orientations at The Night Ministry headquarters.  In friendship and support~ Ann Richards

In 1989, Eric and Michele met in Miami Airport on their way to an archeological dig in the Arica desert of Northern Chile. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with an archeology degree, Eric was a grad student from the University of Chicago. Michele was attending Califor-nia State University, Long Beach and was also working on her archeology degree. It was, as they say, love at first sight! They had a lot in common and after the dig, knew they were meant to be together. After dating long distance for two more years, they both graduated and married in 1991.If you did the math, you know this year is their 25th anniversary. To celebrate, they took the whole family to northern Chile to show the kids, Chloe and Evan, where they first met and worked together on the dig. As an added bonus, they went to Easter Island and Machu Picchu where they did a four day hike to 14,000 feet. As college students, they weren’t able to afford seeing the sites so this became a special trip for the whole family.Eric grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Michele in Long Beach, California. When they first married, they lived in Hyde Park in Chicago where they stayed for two years be-fore moving to a small home in St. Charles. Then in 2000, when they decided to have a family, they went to a bigger home west of St. Charles. They have two children. Chloe is a sophomore at St. Charles North and Evan a freshman. Growing up, Eric attended a Catholic Church. Michele did not go to church. After they married, they did not attend a church right away, but when they started having a family they wanted to find a church in which to raise their kids.

The “big white church” was close to their home so they visited and knew this was it. They joined in 2000. They love the church, the people and the programs for the kids and adults. Eric won first place in our first chili cook off and still enjoys cooking at our fall fest the first Saturday after Labor Day each year. He has been on council for three years. Michele was on the Congregational Life Committee and was instrumental in helping plan the last church auction. Chloe and Evan went through the Sunday school program, participated in puppets and last year Chloe was in GF. This year they both will be in GF and plan to attend the Wednesday night fellowships and go on all the mission trips. Eric has had an online web design business for 21 years. He is also in the midst of developing a new app for truck-ers to use, helping them know where to park for deliv-eries and little details to make it easier to drive across country. Michele has had a variety of experiences. Besides being a stay at home Mom for several years, she has a certificate in American Sign Language and has worked in the early childhood program at Ferson Creek. Two years ago she started her own business in Elburn called Move into Focus where she works with those who have ADHD, giving them special techniques to help them focus independently. The Weidls have several interests and hobbies. As a fam-ily, they started Tae Kwon Do together about 9 years ago and they all have black belts. Evan is testing for his third degree black belt soon. They love to travel and go boating on Lake Carroll in Illinois. Besides cooking, Eric belongs to a running club where he is known as the pacer. Introduce yourself to the Weidls and find out more de-tails about their 25th anniversary trip and much more.

Marla Hecht, a long-time member of our congregation, passed away on Friday, June 17, after a long illness. Marla served our church in many capacities through the years, including as an advisor on a youth mission trip to Back Bay Mission, as secretary of the church council, and as a member of the Search Committee that chose Rev. John Rodgers. She was also a member of our singles’ brunch bunch that met for several years. A memorial service will be held sometime in the future. May God grant Marla eternal rest and peace.

Concerts in the ParkAn even dozen of us enjoyed the sounds of “Brass From the Past” at Lincoln Park in St. Charles on Thursday evening, June 30. We really did have a good time and some of us even got out on the dance floor. These 2-hour outdoor concerts continue until mid-August. They are free and family-friendly. Bring a lawn chair, and your own food/drinks, or buy a sub or pizza at the park. Concerts begin at 7pm but make sure you’re there by 6:30pm.

The schedule includes:

July 7 Dick Diamond & the Dusters July 14 The Hat Guys July 21 Second Hand Soul Band July 28 7th Heaven August 4 Wild DaisyAugust 11 TropixplosionAugust 18 Howard and the White Boys

I want to suggest that we have another “church night” on August 18. “Howard & the White Boys” are a very popular group, and you won’t be disappointed. This is a show when you definitely need to get there extra-early to get a spot on the lawn.

Change to CommunionHoly Communion will be served at the front of the sanctuary in July, August and September. As a relationship to which we are all invited, we will walk forward to receive the bread and cup by intinction. Those who require pew communion will be served where they are sitting. We will continue to offer gluten free bread. There will be a special table in the narthex to the right of the central doors. If you need gluten free bread, please take some with you in a cup to your seat before the service. It can be placed in the pew holder until communion time. If you don’t get it before the service, feel free to walk out at the time of communion and return to your seat with your piece of bread.
