May fair Saturday 5 May The fete committee has started planning and has requested your kind donations of any of the following items: - Could members please start make plant cuttings for the plant stall. - We need clean glass jars, please. Labels removed, for the jams and pickles ladies (no bigger than 375ml) - Donations for Mother's Day hampers would be much appreciated: chocolates, gourmet items, champagne, gift cards, luxury bath products etc. Baskets will be welcome too. - Donations for the White Elephant stall- to be delivered to church no earlier than Thursday 3 May 12pm. The back hall is rented out on a permanent basis and we have no storage space available. We are not allowed to sell clothes, mattresses, electrical goods or entertainment units. REGULATING CHARITIES AND CHURCHES

You may have heard the discussion in the media about proposed Federal legislation which could

limit the ability of churches and charities which receive donations to speak on issues which may

be deemed “political”. If you would like to know more, and/or express concern about this, there is

information to assist in the foyer.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Collated reports for the AGM are available today in the foyer. There is still the opportunity to nominate people to be Elders or members

of Church Council; nominations are due in the office by Tuesday 13 March.

PETITION: JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES There is a petition available in the foyer of the church, calling for

an end of the indefinite detention of asylum seekers and for

permanent protection to be offered to refugees who have sought

protection in Australia. Please consider adding your signature.

The World Day of Prayer, Frankston Local Committee wish to thank the Rev David Fotheringham and High Street Uniting Church for allowing St Paul’s Anglican Church to host this year’s WDP Service in your church at short notice due to installation works being undertaken in the tower at St Paul’s. Thank you to all members of HSUC who attended as part of the congregation or actively participated within the service or helped with the morning tea. It was a very successful service with over 50 people from various churches learning about Suriname, praying for the people and their country plus exploring the theme ‘All God’s Creation is very good’. The Genesis creation story was effectively portrayed visually. In place of a speaker, the reflective activity focused on the issue of recycling organic and non-organic waste, highlighting that we must all play our part in preserving and caring for God’s creation. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION David Dunn, who is currently attending our mid-

week Lenten studies (day-time), has been doing

training in Spiritual Direction and is offering to meet

with anyone who would like to explore it. Spiritual

Direction is not “directive”; a Spiritual Director

invites people to explore their understanding of God,

paying attention to their perceptions of what God

may be doing in them. If you are interested in finding

out more, please talk to David Fotheringham, who

can put you in touch with him.

EXTRAORDINARY CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING The Presbytery is reviewing the needs of congregations around the Presbytery, with a view to how it structures resources when the new funding model for Presbyteries takes effect in September. The Presbytery is using a particular model to understand and map congregational life. To do so, they are asking church councils to respond to some particular questions about the congregation’s life, and provide feedback by the end of March – a short time-frame, because of the need to gather information and respond to it as quickly as possible. We are tentatively looking at holding a special Church Council meeting on Tuesday 20 March, from 7:30 to 9:00, to hold this discussion.

THE PROMISED HELPER

I have said these things to you while I am still with you.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything,

and remind you of all that I have said to you.

(John 14:25-26)

As part of Jesus’ farewell speech to his disciples, Jesus promises that his

going will allow the Holy Spirit to come to them. In this part of John’s

gospel, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as either the “Spirit of Truth” or the

“Paraclete”, which is translated as “Advocate” (NRSV, NIV) or

“Helper” (Good News Translation).

The Greek behind the word paraclete comes from the idea of “one called

to be alongside.” As the Alongsider, the Holy Spirit accompanies us as we

bear witness to what we know and/or experience of Jesus’ life, and guides

our search for grace and truth in life.

“Truth” encompasses more than just propositions that could be written

down in books – hence God’s revelation of grace and truth coming in a

person, rather than in a series of propositions that demand our assent.

Deeper truth is found in the journey of discovering what God reveals to us

in ourselves, through other people, and in Jesus; the Holy Spirit comes

alongside us in that journey.

For followers of Jesus, that journey isn’t always “safe”. As parts of this

passage makes clear, we may encounter those who are opposed to Jesus’

way, but the Advocate stays with us through such trials. Even there, we

may continue to learn God’s grace and truth.
