For the past year we have been in a self-study and planning process to move forward with calling an associate pastor serving in a half-time position The Call Committee is currently meeting and interviewing several qualified candidates for the position Please remember the Call Committee and these candidates in prayer This is a confidential process that does not allow us to reveal the names of any candidates at this time In the meantime Pastor John Marboe continues his capable work with us as our interim associate pastor

I am taking an opportunity to greet all of you as Congregation President Our new council members began the year with a morning retreat sharing breakfast devotions prayer and voicing our hopes for GA in 2013 We also shared a meal the following week with our outgoing council members Thank you outgoing council members for a wonderful job done in the past years I truly sense The Holy Spirit at work in us with the energy excitement and willingness to pitch right in I would like to thank Christopher Stordalen for accepting the Vice President role When my husband and I returned from California and itrsquos warm breezes blue skies and flowers everywhere a few weeks ago I have to admit looking at all the snow took a bit of getting used to again Spring will come and with it always brings hope and hope and trust in Godrsquos wisdom is how I feel about our church

I have told the story to many of you of my friend from college with whom I shared a car trip from Michigan to Minnesota Now ldquoJimrdquo was one of those people for whom the world fell neatly into two categories right and wrong I had no idea to what extent until this trip I soon discovered that not only would Jim not break the speed limit by one mph but he was happy to make sure others would not either by staying in the left lane There were times when people could not get around us and a line of cars and trucks bunched up behind When I asked him to speed up and move over he responded through clenched teeth ldquoThey shouldnrsquot be going any faster than thisrdquo To me this is kind of a parable about the way we ALL can be at times righteous We get all roiled up over somethingmdashprobably not the speed limit but somethingmdashas though it is all about that thing When in truth a spirit

has come over us Our way of being has become infused with an indignant sense of our own right-ness Luther worried that this way of being (righteous) could pass for true religion Therefore he advised never to be so righteous that you come to believe it Instead the Holy Spirit of God creates faith or trust in the forgiveness of Godmdashwhich constantly undermines the indignant self During this season from Easter to Pentecost we take up readings that speak of the birth or creation of the Christian community in its earliest days This community happens when the Spirit is given the spirit of forgiveness that alone can bring a sense of peace with God Dietrich Bonhoeffer the German pastor and martyr of last century wrote a little book called Life Together In it he says that when we love what we think the

community SHOULD be more than the community itself (warts and all) we become destroyers of community (pastors need especially to take note of this) The longer I live in Christian communities the more I think this is profoundly true Why are we here What do we want To be criticized judged and accepted only for the way in which we fit in or produce what others want No we get enough of that in the world We come because we all need and want to be affirmed in our being for no other reason than that we exist and we are here We need the affirmation that comes from Godmdashbut must come through othersmdashin words and deeds in bread wine water and word This is not at all to say that the Christian community should let any kind of behavior go on We do not tolerate abuse theft slander violence and the like But these are ground rules for any community The spiritual community guided by Christrsquos Spirit must be deeper than that It is love without condition It is radical acceptance of one another as sacred beings This is the miracle of Christian community the foundation of anything we do
