What do I need to say that I haven’t said already? Images from this past school year flash across my consciousness, and I scan each one, hoping an epiphany will strike. Several minutes pass, then more minutes tick off the clock, and I remain fixated on the blank screen. I wonder why it is so difficult to find something to inspire me...and then, as inspiration often does, it struck, like a lightning bolt ripping across the sky. It is not the somethings that inspire me at Lakota, it is the someones. e Lakota Local School District operates successfully each and every day to promote student learning and achievement because of the caring, dedicated some- ones who make Lakota what it is: Mr. Detwiler, who is the most visible and personable Superintendent in the entire state; Mr. Matz and Mrs. Sprow, two excellent building leaders; Mrs. Foos, the Director of Student Services, who can address the affective needs of students better than any other professional educator I have met; Mr. Abbott, the Technology Coordinator, who tirelessly answers questions from the staff and spent countless hours preparing the district for the PARCC assessments; the teaching staff, who place student learning and achievement as their top priority; the support staff, who work behind the scenes, often unheralded, to create a positive learning environment; the cooks and custodial crew, who provide a diverse array of essential services, always with a smile; and the transportation employees, who can be reliably called upon to provide safe transportation for the students to and from school each day. Added to all these wonderful people are supportive Board of Education members, all of whom volunteer their time and energy to support the Lakota community. In essence, I learned a valu- able lesson from that blank screen: it is not the somethings that matter, it is the someones. ese someones sure make Lakota some place to be. 5th GRADE PRESENTS Danger on the Midnight River On Monday, May 4th, Mrs. Bintz’s fifth grade reading class presented the story Danger on the Midnight River written by Gary Paulsen to the first grad- ers. is was an action adventure story retold by the students to their audience through the use of dioramas to interpret and create the scenery and action in the story. ese wonderful dioramas were on display at the district art fair. CHANGES FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEARThe ending of the school year presents an interesting contrast. On one hand, teachers are

busy covering any remaining content standards, finalizing testing results, and planning year-end assemblies. On the other hand, planning for next school year is already taking place! A major revision to the 5th and 6th grade wing of the building will occur for the 2015-2016 school year. The 5th and 6th grade teachers will divide into two grade level teams, with each team containing four content-area teachers. The two teaching teams are as follows:

5th grade 6th gradeEnglish Mrs. Bintz Mrs. Hushour (new to Lakota Middle School!)Social Studies Mrs. Henry Mrs. LinkeyScience Mrs. Davis Mrs. BentleyMath Mrs. Balsizer Mr. Balsizer

5th and 6th grade students will only have four classes, at 75 minutes each, and one fifty-minute Specials class, comprised of a Band, General Music, Gym, and Academic Assist rotation. The changes for the incoming 5th and 6th graders will provide many benefits, including the reduc-tion of a class, since Language Arts will return to one integrated period; less transition time, since students won’t have to switch classes as often; and extended periods in each content-area class. Further, a Raider Rally time will be added to the end of the school day, when students can review the day’s activities/homework expectations, receive important announcements and handouts, participate in team-building activities, and prepare for the end of the school day. All of these changes will enable teachers to ease the transition for incoming 4th graders and to prepare 6th graders for the challenges they will face in 7th and 8th grades. More information about the middle school’s new grade-level teams will be forthcoming, as the new school year approaches.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT WASHINGTON, D.C.!

Eighth grade students participated in the trip of a lifetime, as they ventured to Washington, D.C. for three full days, from April 29-May 1! During the trip, the students visited Arlington National Cemetery, the MLK/FDR/Jefferson Memorials, Mount Vernon, and the Smithsonian Institution, along with other important stops. Students who remained at the middle school participated in virtual tours of Washington, D.C. A note of appreciation is extended to Mrs. Henry, who spent considerable time and energy to prepare students for the trip.

For the 2015-2016 school year, the eighth graders will visit Washington, D.C. in early November. Parents, the planning for the trip has already begun. Please contact Mrs. Henry or Mr. Tackett if you want more information about the fall trip, or if you have other questions.
