The history: I conceived the concept of the High Performance MasterMind Immersion Coaching Program around 2008 when I was Head of Performance Psychology at the Australian Institute of Sport. At this time the landscape of performance psychology changed forever; a new third generation approach to success thinking had arrived. In the years since I have been fortunate to share and refine the methodology with thousands of results-driven professionals in both elite sport and profit-focused business.

How Many Negative Thoughts Every Day?

Repetitive thoughts wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the next statistic cited in the study.

For the average person, 80% of these habitual, repetitive thoughts are negative. That means, that every day most people have more than 45,000 negative thoughts... That’s a whole lot of “stinking thinking!”

Basically, that leaves you 5% of your mental capacity to use to be creative and to focus on getting results. You’ve only got a small, precious chunk of psychological resource left to pursue success.

Performance Under PressurePeak performers rule the world! Or at the very least they reap higher levels of respect in their field, have more valued opinions and get greater praise for their admirable achievements. Just one step below are numerous talented performers, who, strive to become peak performers, but plateau just below that peak level. Realistically there is very little difference between the technical skills and abilities of the two – it’s just that the peak performer is the only one who can always deliver under pressure.

High performance is about two things – concentration and composure. Concentration is your ability to focus on the “right things at the right time.” Composure is your ability to stay focused on those “right things” when the pressure in on.

But once composure is gone, washed out by the “waterfall” of negative thoughts that we listen to, concentration quickly follows. Results suffer. Not through a lack of ability to do the job, but through a lack of ability to do the job when it really matters. At the end of the day, composure is the key to results.

For over two decades, I worked and prospered in the cut-throat world of elite sport. One thing I can tell you is that the progress of results is never linear. Inevitably you will encounter plateaus, even setbacks, on your road to success.

You see it in sport all the time... a team is good in the first half, but struggle in the second. They can do it one week, but not the next. One month it has all come together, the next it’s turned to mud.

Maybe you have the same experience… You develop a great forehand shot in tennis, but now your backhand isn’t working. You can putt like a PGA Tour Pro, but your drives end amongst the trees. One year you win the “Star Employee Award,” but this quarter you can’t “kick a goal” to save your life.

“At some point, most people’s results drop off. However, your results depend on how you respond to the negativity and self-doubt.”

These setbacks can be some of the most important moments in your drive to success.

The old-school approach to deal with the negativity, self-doubt and disappointment of a setback, was first, ignore it, and if that didn’t work - fight it! This meant you had to start a psychological tug-o-war inside your head - between the negative thoughts that would pull you one way - “No, you can’t do it” - and the positive thoughts that would pull back - “C’mon, yes you can.” As this tug-o-war continued back and forth, over and over, you lost focus on your goals and you became consumed by the fight.

With all your attention turned to the back and forth emotional struggle and, not focused on your performance, your results suffered. Eventually, you felt composed enough to start focusing on your results again. However, as you fought to regain control from your negative thoughts you wasted a massive amount of focus, time and psychological energy. You lost ground. That is why your results suffered. The old-school psychological tug-o-war with yourself insured that you lost focus on the main game of getting results.

The new-school approach is completely different; it’s designed to get better results, faster! It accepts – doesn’t fight - the tough negative stuff, and stays focused on what you need to get the job done. The graph highlights the difference in the two approaches.

How Acceptance Gets Better Results, Faster!

Here’s the challenge…

As you drive your bus towards your goals and dreams, some big ugly monsters show up on the road – negativity, fear, self-doubt, just to name a few. They gnash their terrible teeth and roar their terrible howls. They have stalked you with menace, disgust and terror at every turn. Now they block your way and paralyze your progress towards your goals and dreams. They even try to push you off course, into a less acceptable side road.

Suppose you decide to persistently head towards your goals and dreams in spite of the monsters. How do you deal with them when they shout, carry on and block your way?

There’s only one solution: Let the monsters ON your bus so they can’t block you anymore.

That’s right! Just open the door, let them on board and accept them as part of your journey. Eventually they’ll take their seats at the back. They’ll still jump up and wave their arms from time to time. They’ll yell their threats, predict failure and try to scare and discourage you. The whole time you can see them in the rear-view mirror and you can hear them shout. Sometimes they’ll probably try to tell you where and how to drive your bus. They’ll usually try to grab the wheel.

But with the monsters on board, they won’t block your way, and keep you stuck with mediocre results. You can put the bus in gear, pedal to the metal and head straight for your goals. You’re taking the monsters with you, along with all the grief they cause you, but you’re still moving forward to where you want to go. You’re the one in charge. YOU are the driver of the bus.

This is what acceptance is - you can say “yes” even when you want to turn away. It’s how you turn your goals into action and how you get from struggle to success, fast! It’s the steel backbone of the High Performance MasterMind Coaching Program.

Once you accept the pain of the setback, the quicker you can immerse yourself in your goals again. You can dedicate yourself to your results with renewed energy. You start to create incredible results faster, because you’re not distracted and discouraged. You don’t use old-school motivational strategies in an attempt to “psych” yourself back into the saddle again. You simply accept the setback, refocus and start to hit goals that are even greater than last time.
