are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.
Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.
As you enter please remember the Coast Salish People, the original inhabitants of this
area, and join us in praying for healing and reconciliation.

Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a
Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
MISSION OBJECTIVES
•To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and
welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;
• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;
• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among
parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;
• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God
within and beyond the Parish;
• To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our
assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to

If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the
Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.
In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.
Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.
Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the
church on the opposite side to the entrance.
Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the
service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make
an appointment.
The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the
Mass.
The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to
those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also
customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.
You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and
prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.
We adore you,
most Holy Lord Jesus Christ
here and in all your churches throughout all the world;
and we bless you because
by your Holy Cross
you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection
The desert in our lives is the place where in our poverty, our sin and our need we
come to know the Lord. For us, like the Israelites, before us, it is the place of the
essential confrontations, where the irrelevancies are stripped away and the
elemental things become all-important, where the truth in our hearts is revealed.
Our desert place is any place where we confront God. It is the place of truth, but
also of tenderness; the place of loneliness but also of God’s closeness and care.
The journey is precarious, but God is faithful, even though our own fidelity is
shaky. In the place of hunger and poverty of spirit we are fed by the word of God,
as Jesus himself was in the desert.
Part of our poverty may be that we are not even aware of our longing for God,
only aware of the suffocating burden of our own sinfulness, of the slum within.
But the desert is the place of confrontation not just with our sins, but with the
power of God’s redemption. You come to see it as the place where there can be
springing water, manna to keep you going, the strength you never knew you had,
the surprise of the quail that plops down at your feet, a tenderness that cares for
you and a knowing Lord. These things are not the promised land, but they are
tokens of love and may be sacraments of glory. Your life, your prayer, can be the
wilderness to which you must look steadfastly if you would see the glory of God.

London, 2nd edition, 1994, pp. 36-8.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.
When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an
inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first
of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is
giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God
will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that
time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the
land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket
from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make
this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he
went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a
great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted
us, by imposing hard labour on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the
Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord
HIGH MASS | 11
brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying
display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and
gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the
fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the
Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the
Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the
Lord your God has given to you and to your house. Deuteronomy 26:1-11
PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, abides under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall say to the Lord, "You are my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put
my trust." Antiphon
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him
and bring him to honour. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.
Antiphon
Psalm 91:1-2, 15-16
EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.
"The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" that is, the word of faith that we
proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the
heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture
says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." For there is no distinction
between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on
him. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:8B-13

THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the
wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all
during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If
you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered
him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'" Then the devil led him up and
showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To
you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I
give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus
answered him, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" Then
the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to
him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He will
command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and 'On their hands they will bear
you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is
said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil had finished every test,
he departed from him until an opportune time. Luke 4:1-13

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
Celebrant Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly
Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our na-
ture upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;
who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and suffi-
cient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did insti-
tute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his
precious death, until his coming again.
Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we
receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus
Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of
his most blessed body and blood;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks,
he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given
for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for
you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remem-
brance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy
holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrec-
tion, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before
thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salva-
tion, the memorial which he hath commanded.
lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,
Lord our God.
Celebrant And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of
praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and
death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole
Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we
pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy commun-
ion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour
and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

THE MYTH OF TODAY’S SECULAR WORLD-VIEW
Many people assume that our world today is profoundly secular and that a secular world view is
a necessary and logical result of modernity. Many of us accept the notion that an ideal moral and
ethical political system can only operate in the absence of religious belief. In fact, however,
religion has failed to disappear, and in the twenty-first century it thrives, diversifying and
growing all over the world. In this series we confront the “myth” of the secular, shedding light
upon the religious beliefs at the foundation of both our cultural epistemology and our social
institutions. In the first part of this series we will play excerpts from a CBC radio broadcast
entitled, “The Myth of the Secular” and discuss the contradictions behind the myth. We conclude
with a look at the work of philosopher Charles Taylor (A Secular Age), who redefines
secularization in light of its failure to uproot the religious and spiritual values of our age.

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP
St James' Outreach Committee is currently
assisting with the sponsorship of a refugee family
from Iraq, together with St Mary's Anglican
Church, in Halifax. This elderly couple fled from
their homeland to Syria, where they were
registered with the UNHCR, and subsequently
selected to come to Canada through the private
sponsorship scheme organized by the Primate's
World Relief and Development Fund.
Unfortunately the outbreak of civil war in Syria
led to the withdrawal of Canada's diplomatic
representatives in Damascus, including the Visa
Office, which deals with refugee affairs. This has
now been relocated to Amman, Jordan. Contact
with the refugee camps in Syria is consequently all
the more difficult.
Because of this disruption, the time for this
couple's medical examinations and chest X-rays
had expired, and they have had to be done again.
This happened in late November, but the results
had to be sent to Paris for verification.
We have had no further news as to when this
couple may be allowed to travel to Canada. Their
daughter, who has already arrived in Halifax, is
naturally extremely anxious.
Your prayers are asked for this family.

conscious commitment to the way of Christ.
Reaffirmation is an opportunity to renew your
baptismal vows and Reception is for members
who were confirmed in other churches and who
now desire to be received into the Anglican
Communion. The sacrament is a means of grace
and strength for living out the vows made at
baptism.
We hope this may be a rich time of learning,
prayer, and relationship building. If you are
interested in preparation, please contact in
person or via email Fr. Mark, rec-
[email protected], or Mtr. Jessica,
[email protected]. The celebration of
confirmation/reaffirmation/reception will take
place on April 28 at Christ Church Cathedral.

THE PASCHAL CANDLE
Most of you are familiar with the Paschal Candle.
It is the first flame lit from the new fire at the
Easter Vigil, which represents the light of Christ
rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts and
minds. The candle is marked by special symbols:
the cross; the Greek letters for alpha and omega
reminding us that God is the beginning and the
end; the current year, representing God present
with us now; and five grains of incense
representing the five wounds of Christ. The
Paschal Candle is processed into the church at the
Easter Vigil and remains in its holder near the
altar throughout the Easter season, during which
it is lit at all Masses held in the main sanctuary.
The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be
ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the
neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to
support this meaningful tradition by making a
donation toward the cost of the candle, please add
the amount to your offering envelope, and on the
outside of the envelope write the amount and
beside it write “Paschal Candle”. If you do not use

PAX EASTER 2013: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline is tomorrow!
The PAX editorial team gives thanks for your
ongoing contributions to our Parish magazine.
We now welcome submissions for our upcoming
Easter issue, the theme of which is renewing our
baptismal vows. This theme could be addressed in
any of the following ways: baptism as the
beginning of our journey of conversion to Christ;
the significance of baptism in the liturgy, such as
the invitation to our statement of the Creed ("Let
us confess the faith of our baptism"); exploring the
Church's practice of baptism at some moment in
Christian history; or the importance of baptism
within the Easter liturgies. As usual, we also
welcome submissions on other topics that you
may wish to explore. The maximum length for
written submissions is 500 words. All
submissions, whether articles, photos or artwork,
are due no later than Monday, February 25th.
They can be emailed to
[email protected] or left in the PAX mail
slot just outside the Church office.
NEWS FROM GENERAL SYNOD
Join our push for affordable housing
Ali Symons, General Synod Senior Editor.
Housing continues to be a joint priority for
Anglicans and Lutherans as they support Bill C-
400, a private member's bill calling on the
government to develop a national housing
strategy. Anglican and Lutheran staff leaders
engaged in this issue invite local church members
to connect with MPs about the bill before it goes
before Parliament, Feb. 13.
An estimated 400,000 Canadians do not have
healthy homes. The UN Special Report on
Adequate Housing has observed that "Canada is
one of the few countries in the world without a
national housing strategy."
Bill C-400 recognizes housing as a human right. It
would commit the government to work with non-
profits, the private sector, Aboriginal
communities, and all levels of government in
developing a national housing strategy. With set
timelines and goals, the strategy would then
address the root causes of homelessness and set a
plan to provide housing for all.
Church members are encouraged to write to or
meet with their MPs about Bill C-400 as soon as
possible. Resources are available through
Dignity for All, a campaign co-founded by long-
time ecumenical partner Citizens for Public
Justice. http://dignityforall.ca
This advocacy push is one example of housing
HIGH MASS | 31
St. James’ News & Announcements
work Christians do on a daily basis across Canada.
In Victoria, Evangelical Lutheran churches
network with other non-profits to ensure
adequate housing for all levels of poverty: those
who live on government subsidies, the working
poor, and the lower middle class.
In Winnipeg, St. Matthew's Anglican Church is
converting its property to 25 units of affordable
housing for limited income families, a
neighbourhood resource centre, and a dedicated
worship space. Many more examples exist across
the country, including at a regional level.
On a national level, the Anglican Church of
Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Canada are developing a shared resolution on
housing and homelessness to be presented at Joint
Assembly, to be held July 2013 in Ottawa. The
resolution will commit both churches to
continued local action and government advocacy.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
UPDATE FROM DIOCESE
1. TRC National Event, Vancouver.
The dates for the TRC event proper are Sept. 18-
21 (Wednesday-Saturday). In addition, the Indian
Residential Schools Survivors' Society and
Reconciliation Canada, in partnership with many
other community groups including churches, are
planning "book-end" events around the hearings.
These are: the All Nations Canoe Gathering on
Sept. 17; the event "A New Way Forward" at BC
Place on the evening of Sept. 21; and a Walk for
Reconciliation on the morning of Sunday, Sept.
22. Church participation is welcome, and indeed
essential, at all three of these events as well as at
the TRC hearings themselves.
The TRC hearings will be held in the facilities of
the PNE at Hastings Park, which is within the
parish boundaries of St David of Wales. We are
hoping that it will be possible to designate St
David's as the "parish church" for the TRC event,
and that the parish will be able to co-ordinate
spiritual support, and, to a limited extent,
logistical support for our Diocese's participation
in the TRC hearings.
