Picture yourself at a luxurious holiday resort, or maybe on a cruise, this summer and if you dress accordingly, you’ll be right on trend. According to Rhonda Clark of Charisma, spring and summer fashion sees a return to flowing, loose and comfortable garments, such as kaftans, with bell or batwing sleeves. The kaftans are in bold, colourful print fabrics and range from short to mid- calf styles so they can be worn like a tunic. Rhonda says lots of crystal, sequins or beading on the necklines of these garments make it easy to turn them from daywear into eveningwear. The addition of white pants turns this into the kind of style popular in seaside locations such as the Gold Coast or Florida. Alternatively, the crisp, nautical combination of white with navy blue or indigo is a very strong trend. Casual chic Sportswear has also been seen on catwalks around the world, heralding a return to the “sport lux” look. Rhonda describes this as “a modern take on the 1980s” with styles that turn tracksuits, sweatshirts and sneakers into all day wear. Crop tops are a big part of this style, if you have the abs for it, often Bold is beautiful Bright colours, as well as graphic and bold designs, bring a fun element to this summer’s fashion. The biggest news is that orange and tangerine shades are everywhere, replacing red. Other on-trend colours include vibrant fuchsia, bright greens and metallics. There is also a movement towards fabrics in pastel colours such as pink, peach and mint. Gold and silver jewellery and bright, fun necklaces suit these colourful looks. Shoes are a mix of platform and fine heels, as well as sporty sneakers and flats which look good with kaftan and Batik styles. paired with loose fitting pants. Ethnic prints The graphic, but still earthy styles of Batik and folk/ethnic prints are featured on dresses and tops. These are worn with loose fitting pants and tie in nicely with the resort trend. No summer wardrobe is complete without accessories, and this season, big, bold and colourful is what’s in vogue. If the budget is tight there are still plenty of stylish options – here are some we found at local recycled boutiques. The basket of accessories, left, are from Cherry Picked in Silverdale and the bangles, right, from Lindyloos Recycled Fashion in Whangaparaoa.

Beards are backYoung men are letting their facial hair grow long, with full beards and moustaches a current trend. Ian Gravatt of ID Hair in Silverdale, who is currently sporting a beard himself, says young men are combining sharp, modern haircuts with full beards. Others are opting for a long, Salvador Dali-like moustache, which can even be waxed into pointed tips – expect to see more of this kind of moustache artistry next month during the Movember fundraiser for men’s health.

Local fashion stores are lining up to take part in this year’s Hibiscus Hospice Fashion Show, which is entitled Endless Summer, and tickets are available now.

Although the Cancer Society’s official Daffodil Day has been and gone, Wentworth College held its own version on September 19, creating a golden glow around the school.

Students of Wentworth College turned out in yellow to support a special Daffodil Day on September 19.

Special Daffodil Day held at Wentworth College

The fundraiser involved the sale of yellow helium balloons, fresh and fabric daffodils and cupcakes as well as the yellow-themed mufti day. It was organised by Fleming House, including senior students Rosalie Reeves and Sam Clarke, with all funds going to the Cancer Society.Although it is just one of many House fundraisers this one had special

meaning, with the recent death of Principal Bruce Tong’s wife Janine from cancer.Bruce says he has been amazed and touched by the volume of support that he has had from the students, their families and staff but says that the point of Daffodil Day is how all-pervasive the disease is, affecting people of all ages and their families and friends.

There was plenty of fashion flair on display at Whangaparaoa College recently, with garments made by students featuring on the catwalk. The college held a showcase on September 11 which included students’ work in fashion, drama and dance. More than 100 students took part. As well as a fashion show from the Fabrics Technology students, pictured, there were dance and drama items, as well as music and artwork. The Year 13 Hospitality class did the catering, impressing all those who attended.
