Flowers made from flax leaves can be incorporated into the decorations. It’s easy to go overboard, but the idea is not to overdo the ‘kitch’ element, but to add a little sophistication and look for subtle ways to reflect the theme such as ribbon or table napkins in paua or greenstone coloured fabric, flax placemats, or silver ferns and other native plants in the bridal bouquet, buttonholes and table arrangements. This theme lends itself to many fun interpretations, and there are plenty of ideas at local stores, often at affordable prices – all it takes is a little imagination and flair to put it together in a way that will make your wedding unique and memorable. Brides are increasingly turning back the clock, choosing flowers similar to those their mothers, or grandmothers may have carried on their wedding day. Barbera Everiss of Flowers by Joanne in Orewa says the flowers that are currently in demand reflect the popularity of simpler, more low-key style weddings, as well as vintage or retro themes. She says a vintage bouquet will be a mix of cottage garden type flowers such as lizianthus, spray roses, dahlias and gypsophila, mainly in soft, pastel colours. A simple twine binding is used, as opposed to ribbon. For this style of wedding, the reception tables may be decorated with Agee jars or glass milk bottles filled with mixed wildflowers, for a casual, retro look. Barbara says this option is not necessarily easier on the budget than the more formal floral arrangements as a large amount of different types of flowers are required to make it work. By Fiona MurraySome of us are civilly united, others are ‘until death do us part’, and for some it’s pretty much all there, save for that marriage certificate, white dress and speeches. So, what’s the difference? When it comes to property, after three years, regardless of whether you’re married, in a civil union or in a de facto relationship, in the event that you separate or if one of you dies, each partner is entitled to a half share of all relationship property assets. So, although after three years you may have only just got to the part where he sees you without any make up on, already there are ‘relationship assets’ which you are each entitled to a half share of. Hang on – what about my girlfriend who hasn’t moved in yet? Under the law, when looking at whether a couple is in a de facto relationship, there a number of factors to consider including, the length of the relationship, the extent of common residence, the degree of dependence, the arrangements of financial support and the ownership or acquisition of property. No-one factor is determinative, so even though she may not be living with you, you may already be in a de facto relationship.Asset baseWhat assets are considered relationship property assets? The home where you and your partner live is deemed to be the family home, regardless of who owned it at the start of the relationship or who has paid the mortgage and outgoings: you are each entitled to a half share. It’s the same for family chattels (including that plasma television you got before

you even met). Bank accounts, shares and other investments generally go into the relationship property mix. A lot depends on what monies you use to purchase those things, but if it’s from your salary, for example, salary is relationship property and anything you purchase with it becomes relationship property too. In the same way, any debts accumulated during the relationship are shared equally. If you own a rental property and your partner has worked on it, managing the books, perhaps, or finding tenants, those contributions may see them have an entitlement to that property too. This may apply even if you transferred the flat into a Trust – the law compensates partners for relationship property transferred into a Trust during the relationship. The long and the short of it is that whatever type of committed relationship you’re in, whether it’s for 25 years or 3.1 years, it’s all the same when determining your rights to relationship property. The equal sharing provisions apply. However, if you want to depart from those rules, and identify what belongs to each person, you can. Under the law, you and your other half can agree on what you want to be relationship property and what you want to be kept separate, but you can’t just write it down on the back of an electricity bill – any agreement like this is only valid if you each meet with a lawyer and receive independent advice before you sign it.Fiona Murray is a relationship property solicitor at Simpson Western. Wedding hair goes back to natureSoft and natural are key words when it comes to hairstyles for this year’s weddings. Anita Werner of Vivo Orewa, who specialises in hair ups, says loose soft waves, pretty constructed braids and high sleek buns, with the additions of floral pieces and/or lacy fascinators, are part and parcel of these natural looks. Anita says these styles will carry through to winter’s college ball season. She suggests teaming these looks with hues of pink and silver and pale toned make up for a soft, yet elegant, natural look. On the horizon are bolder styles, such as metallic and heavy set eye makeup to complement the up and coming hairstyles such as slick, pulled back and moulded hair, worn off the face. Anita says this year’s Oscar ceremony pointed the way, with many hairstyles heavily parted to a side with the remaining hair swept up with soft curls. She recommends clients book a pre-wedding day trial, which includes a full consultation, personal input and stylist’s recommendations.

In 2009 Hibiscus Matters published a story about the lack of local wedding reception venues on the Coast, and, according to Hellen Hyndman of Event Designers, little has changed in the four years since.Hellen says that although there are a number of good restaurants on the Hibiscus Coast that can be hired out for wedding receptions, the only venue she is aware of that is specifically designed for this type of function is Gulf Harbour Country Club. There is also the option of hiring a 360 Degrees ferry if you fancy a reception at sea.Hellen says the most popular reception venues with her clients are the vineyards in the Matakana region.Coast couples also hold their weddings in Auckland city, the North Shore and Helensville.“The many beaches on the Hibiscus Coast are very popular for wedding photos, but there is a shortage of nearby places to hold receptions,” Hellen says. She says recent weddings that her company organised, in Red Beach and Dairy Flat, were held in marquees on private properties. On the horizon are Orewa Surf Club’s new clubrooms, which will have function space with grandstand views of the beach. The Club is still mired in the resource consent process.

Shakespear Regional Park is among the popular locations for wedding photographs, but nearby reception venues are hard to find. Photograph, Kate Tyler, TopKat Photography

Reception venues hard to find

Constant canapés If you’re short of space for a sit-down reception, the recent trend for cocktail food only may be the solution. This style of reception is increasingly popular for people who want to have their reception in an intimate venue, or in a moderately sized marquee without room for large tables. It involves the provision of seating around the venue, while some guests stand. Canapés are served by waiters circulating through the venue. Wedding planners advise that this is a great way to provide a range of food that ensures all guests are catered for. However, while this approach saves space it is not generally cheaper than a full, sit-down meal.

The Hobbs Wharf development now underway at Gulf Harbour may also include a venue that can be hired for functions.Hellen says the ideal venue for the Coast needs to showcase local character.“People getting married here want to have coastal views and be near the beach for photographs and anyone who can provide that will be onto a winner.”

Seamless colour for autumn hairAccording to Linley Wade of Hair Scene & Beauty of Whangaparaoa, many of the autumn/winter season’s hairstyles feature colours that require special application techniques to create a seamless blend. She says included in Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks 2012 are soft browns, coppers, caramels and blondes but also some bolder colours, including strong violets, with an Oriental theme. A modern take on the pageboy cut and the short, stylish “Mia Farrow” look are right on trend and there is also a strong, androgenous look that will turn heads with its cool colours that combine purple, greens and blues.

Structure and a harder edge are evident in the fashions for the autumn/winter season but the look is still one that flatters many figure types.A punk influence is everywhere, with metal studs used as a textural element on garments as well as accessories (for more on accessories, see below).Rhonda Clark of Charisma, who recently returned from the latest fashion trade show in Sydney, says metallic and beaded looks, as well as sequins are on trend – for example plain tops with metal stud detail on the shoulders.Structure, including narrow, tapered pants, pencil skirts (to the knee, or just below) and shaped, blazer-style jackets provide a flattering, slim silhouette. This look is, in general, a lot more simple with clean lines as opposed to the layered look that once ruled supreme. However, Rhonda stresses that simple does not mean plain – fabrics are textured, lacy, wet-look or prints. Fur (including dyed fur) makes an appearance for vests.Shirts have pretty details such as slightly puffy sleeves or a bow, and patterns including Baroque. These add a lot of interest when combined with a structured skirt in a plain colour.

Patterned pantsThe racks devoted to pants will be among the most colourful this season, with embellished and textured fabric, and Baroque-style patterns a feature.Rhonda says slimline pants that taper to sit on the ankle are in vogue, especially worn with an ankle boot. The demand for jeans in prints and patterns shows no sign of waning.

Structured styles step up for autumn fashions

Warming winter colours y Merlot, mustard and orange are among the strongest colours this season

y Rather than black, look for inky and navy tones

y Prints include animal (such as leopard), geometric or modern flower designs

y Colour blocking and splicing – a mix of solid colours on a garment, such as a skirt with black at the sides and a mustard centre panel – is very popular and can be very slimming.

A store packed with the type of high quality fashion that is also found in department stores across the USA opened its doors this month in Orewa.Importing clothing direct from stores such as Macy’s, JC Penney and Sears has enabled FMP Fashion Trends owner Ane Pedras to provide customers with a huge variety of items to choose from.Ane says that she wants to provide good quality, affordable fashion, which is why prices are kept below $100.Ane and her husband recently moved to Orewa from California after visiting NZ regularly for more than 20 years. The move has proved an ideal opportunity for Annie to combine her love of fashion and contacts in the industry by opening her own store.FMP Fashion Trends, in Tamariki Plaza, includes both formal and informal wear for teens, women and men – everything from lingerie to ball gowns, suits, t-shirts and jeans – in a wide range of sizes.Manager Tracy Hettig, who has worked in clothing retail for 25 years, says that what makes the store unique is the new and exciting labels on offer and the fact that there’s something for everyone.

The store stocks many well-known American labels, as well as some that are not often found in NZ, and sharp-eyed fashionistas will discover plenty of exclusive one-offs.“We have everything from casual beach wear to beautiful after-five dresses, but although there’s a big range, the store still has a boutique-feel,” Tracy says. “Stores like this are ideal for Orewa, because it is the specialty shops, and lack of chain stores, which are making it into a shopping destination.” FMP Fashion Trends officially opened on March 11.

This season’s accessories are not for the faint hearted, with big, outsized pieces that make a strong statement. Necklaces in a dazzling mix

of materials, including chrome, silver, gold and rose gold as well as glow mesh, crystals and

coloured or black plastic are designed to look good against a plain top • Bling

is back, with crystals and chains often combined for a slightly harder edge

• Fur brooches add texture, and earrings are big and long • Metal studs in silver and

gold adorn boots, shoes, belts and bags as well as clothes. Boots pictured are from Charisma.
