Farrington Gurney Church of England’s chosen charity of the year is the Down Syndrome support group Ups and Downs. Earlier this year, the children held a “Dressing UP for DOWNS” mufti day which raised £137.15 and more recently, they organised a “Christmas Cup Cake Competition” which raised just under £100. The cup cake competition idea was launched by Ellie H. (Year 6) who is currently the school council’s chair and it was a great success. More than half of the children in the school participated, baking and decorating beautiful Christmassy cupcakes (with holy leaves, snowmen, Christmas trees and Santas galore!). Two outside judges chose a winner from the infants and one from the juniors. Pictured

here are Luke (Yr 2) and Charlotte (Yr6) with their winning designs. Well done to all our budding bakers!

Robobens

As a special Christmas treat the children at Paulton Infant School had a very special visit from Humble Pie Puppets for a morning of fun entertainment. Humble Pie Puppets bring stories to life through music, magic, juggling, mime and balloon modeling. As well as the children having a fabulous time joining in with the singing and dancing the teachers also joined in!! It was a wonderful treat for all the children which was funded by the great efforts of the PTA and fundraising by the school throughout the year.

Paulton Infant School The Robobens team at

St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, Midsomer Norton competed against 19 other schools at the First Lego League Wessex Regional Robotics Challenge on Monday 26th November 2012. The Robobens now go on to represent the West Country in the National Finals of the First Lego League at Loughborough University on 26th January this year. Teams were judged for their robot design, their research and presentation. After two heats, semis and fi nals of the competitive missions against the clock, the team of 10 and 11 year olds were crowned champions, much to the delight of the whole school. Teacher Mrs Serle and Governor Mr Tatar run the after school club and are very proud of the children’s achievements: “Although we have been on hand to give advice and support, the success is down to the children’s hard work, creativity, enthusiasm and teamwork”. Well done to Joe, Harry, Emma, Jasmine, Emily, James, Charlotte, Leo, Charlotte and Maisie and good luck in the National Finals later this month.

This week Year 5 from St John’s Primary School went on an educational visit to Bath Islamic Centre to explore and learn more about their RE topic: Islam. Pupils in Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their visit, especially meeting a fantastic Iman, named Rashad, who kindly offered to explain the Muslim way of life and to give a short tour round the mosque, where he plays an important role in leading the local Muslim community. In the photographs we are exploring the Islamic holy book, the Qu’ran; we loved how beautifully decorated they were with colourful geometric patterns.

WeatherIn Year 3 at St. John’s Primary School, we have created our own weather stations to kick off our Weather Around the World topic. With all the rain about lately we think that our rain gauge will defi nitely be put to good use! We also made an anemometer to measure wind speed, and a weather vane so we know which direction the wind is blowing from.

Barn Owl VisitThe children at St Benedict’s School had a visit from Chris Sperring and his barn owl, Beau, from the Barn Owl Project - a joint project between the Hawk & Owl Trust and the Somerset Wildlife Trust. The whole school got to meet Chris and Beau who taught them all about barn owls and the importance of wildlife habitats.

St John’s CEVA Primary SchoolYear 4 at St John’s are just beginning a topic on the local area. In order to excite and gain the children’s interest, we always start everything new with a provocation so that the children get a surprise and are inspired to give their own ideas. This time we presented Year 4 with a mystery bag and they had to guess what was inside it. Their descriptions of what they could feel in the bag got everyone buzzing about what the new topic could be. Eventually we pulled out a Gus and Crook and the children’s ideas about what its purpose was were inventive and imaginative. Children quickly established that it must have been used in mining or climbing in some way. Finally, we put it around a child’s waist and watched them demonstrate how they thought it would have been used to pull coal around in the mines. The children couldn’t believe that the mines were so small and that people had to work in such cramped dark conditions.Since our introduction to our topic, our children have been investigating our local history at every opportunity and are very keen on doing their own research at home. It promises to be a very rewarding term ahead!

Hansel and GretelAt St Johns School they have been reading Hansel and Gretel and learning how to write an interesting diary which includes adjectives. They all went into the woodland area and discovered a trail of breadcrumbs! The children followed the trail and found some logs, ready to make a fi re. There was also a piece of bread ready for toasting on the fi re. They continued along the trail and found a wigwam, but again it was deserted. The fi re circle made a great place to sit quietly and use their imagination based on what they had just experienced. They each wrote a diary, sharing their hopes and fears about their journey along the trail.

Year 6 children of Farmborough and High Littleton Primary Schools joined together for a visit to the ‘Lifeskills Centre’ in Bristol at the end of November. ‘Lifeskills’ is an interactive safety education centre, built as a realistic village, which has been developed to teach people how to deal with potentially diffi cult or dangerous situations whilst in a safe environment. The children from both schools worked together in groups and learnt valuable skills.”

Mothering Sunday&

Valentines Day

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent and will be on the 10th March this year. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as servants were given a day off to visit their mother and families.

So have you thought about the gifts for your mum or all the special things you’re going to do for her? Here are a few ideas of the things you can do and make this Mothering Sunday:

Breakfast in BedTreat mum to a delicious breakfast in bed. She can stay in bed and relax whilst you look after her and pamper her. Make a scrapbookMake a scrapbook of pictures and write about all your favourite times with your mum. Your mum will be able to cherish this gift forever.Time to relaxHelp mum to relax by running her a lovely bath and why not bring her favourite book to read as she enjoys the bubbles. Lots of mum’s like to feel pampered so you could treat her to a beauty treatment or a trip to the hairdressers.A Memory BoxYou can use any box that has a lid, it can even be a shoe box, but make it personal by decorating it, Then fill the box with photos and other special items and your mum can add to your memory box whenever she likes.

Whatever you decide to do for your mum on Mother’s Day however big or small she will just love you remembered and the effort you have gone to.

Healthy Choices WeekDuring November our school held a healthy living week. Pupils enjoyed a wide range of activities. The highlights included visits from Jim Imeson, the cycling development officer from Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Go Bike It Project. Children from across the school took their ‘blinged’ bikes completing an obstacle course around the playground. Later in the week our school became only the second primary school in BANES to benefit from the Life Education van. Specialist health and drug education was given using a variety of teaching and learning skills, including puppetry, drama and circle time. The aim was to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and attitudes encouraging them to make their own positive health choices. This visit was made possible by the support of local individuals and we would like to thank Ford Fuel Oils, Chelwood Rotary Club, Ken Biggs, Applet Technology, Timsbury Parish Council and Timsbury Horticultural Society.

Rugby MathsJack Howden, Bath Rugby’s Community Coach visited St John’s Primary School in Midsomer Norton on Monday 14th January to deliver the second session of Tackling Numbers to a very enthusiastic group of eight year olds!Put together by MBNA and Premiership Rugby, this six week programme has been structured in such a way that it brings fun to the classroom, motivating and encouraging children to enjoy maths. This week’s session was about polygons and the different shapes that can be found at a rugby stadium. They were shown maps of Premiership Rugby grounds to see all the formatons used for car parks, terraces, clubhouses etc. The exciting bit was when they were asked to draw their own vision of a first class stadium. They thought it was great fun and created some very artistic drawings. In amongst all the chatter they were heard asking if Jack would be doing tag rugby later. Tag Rugby is delivered in the second hour of all the Tackling Number visits, and the kids couldn’t wait! Class teacher Liz Hebditch said: “The children are loving Jack coming into school. They are very enthusiastic about the programme and enjoy the mixture of maths and rugby.” The Tackling Numbers programme is helping many youngsters to look at maths in a different way. Whether it is measuring the players heights or the size of a rugby pitch, it’s all great fun.

School Council NewsThe children at Paulton Junior School have successfully buried a time capsule! It contains each class’ favourite memories and work about the Olympics and Paralympics. The time capsule will be opened in 2016 with the new children of Paulton Junior School to share whilst the games in Rio are happening.

Bedtime StoriesChildren at St Mary’s Primary School Writhlington had an enjoyable evening and it was so lovely to see so many children coming back to school clutching their special (and sometimes HUGE) teddies and mugs for hot chocolate. Children in Class 1 were asked their thoughts: Sam said, ‘I liked bedtime stories. The stories were fun.’ Jack stated he loved the book ‘Calm Down Boris’. Toby said, ‘I loved all of it. It was funny to see Miss Hamblin in her pyjamas’.

Maths & SportIf you enjoy sport, you will also enjoy Maths! That’s the idea behind the ‘Tackling Numbers’ programme being delivered by Bath Rugby’s Community team in a number of schools around the South West.Put together by MBNA and Premiership Rugby, this six week programme has been structured in such a way it brings fun to the classroom, motivating and encouraging children to enjoy maths. At Farmborough Primary School they were full of enthusiasm as they took part in a maths quiz. Bath Rugby Community Coach, Vicky Heslop, had divided the class into two ‘rugby’ teams, Farmborough Fractions and Team Rugby. Mrs Roberts, Year 4 Class Teacher told me: “It’s been brilliant. The children love it. I’ve been really impressed with the programme. These activities have been really good because they have worked for everybody and kept the class together.” I asked a young girl called Aaliyah what she enjoyed when Bath Rugby comes to her lessons. She said: “I like being in teams. I also enjoyed drawing a rugby pitch and one week we pretended to buy things from the Bath Rugby shop - that was fun!” So, the Tackling Numbers programme is helping many youngsters to look at maths in a different way. They enjoy an hour in the classroom and a further hour outdoors playing rugby games. Whether it’s measuring the pitch or measuring rugby players’ heights, it’s all great fun.

Healthy Schools CertificateFarrington Gurney C of E Primary School has achieved the top ‘green grading’ in every category of the Healthy Schools Certificate. They are the first school to achieve this in every category! Pupils have been working hard on lots of different healthy projects including working on their allotments at Farrington Farm where all the children grew their own vegetables. The pumpkins the children grew were not only used to make pumpkin soup for the entire school but also won prizes in a Bath and North East Somerset Council competition. They have also been involved in activities such as cooking and cycling all to promote healthy living. The Third Wheel is the next book in the best-selling award winning Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Greg’s next middle-school challenge is a Valentine’s Day dance where he must fi nd a date. Greg scurries to fi nd a date for the dance and fears that he will be the only one without a date and even though his best friend Rowley doesn’t have a date either, Greg sees this as no comfort.

Then something unexpected happens and Greg fi nds a date for the dance which then only leaves Rowley as the odd one out. But as usual in Greg’s life nothing runs smoothly and to plan and a lot can happen in one night. Who will end the night lucky in love?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third WheelAuthor: Jeff KinneyAges: 7+

Stick DogAuthor: Tom WatsonAges: 5+

Stick Dog is a new breed of hero. Stick Dog along with his friends Mutt, Stripes, Karen and Poo-Poo are on an adventure to steal a hamburger. They smell the delightful hamburgers and now all they have to do is follow the scent to fi nd the barbecue and eat the delicious hamburgers. Although it sounds like an easy task to fi nd the barbecue it doesn’t quite pan out that way and although Stick Dog and his pals are not short of ideas on how to get to the barbecue they struggle to come up with a plan that isn’t ridiculous or dangerous.

Stick Dog features some very funny illustrations which makes it an enjoyable read for both children and adults.

Billionaire BoyAuthor: David WalliamsAges: 9+

Joe Spud should be very happy, he is extremely rich, he even has his own bowling alley, his own cinema and his own butler who is an orangutan. He is the richest twelve year old in the world but Joe certainly isn’t the happiest...he has no friends at all. But then someone comes into Joe’s life, who likes Joe for being Joe and not because he has lots of money.

Joe has to learn that the best things in life really are free and if Joe’s not careful he’s going to lose them all.

This is a thought provoking story about the perils of having way too much money.

Our children’s birthdays come round so fast every year and for most of us we have the same panic each year “What party am I going to organise?!”. There always seems to be so much to do when arranging a birthday party and never enough time to do it in. Use our check list to make sure you’ve covered all the bases.

The Check list:InvitationsAbout three weeks before the party you’ll need to send out your invitations make sure they include the following information: Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. Your address and phone number. The date, start and fi nish time of the party. The theme, if you are having one.Theme and decorationsMake sure you order any decorations and balloons in plenty of time before the party. Have plenty of blu-tac with you on the day of the party so you can put your decorations up.The Food Every child loves party food, but it may be an idea to make sure you fi nd out if any of the children attending the party have a food allergy. The cakeMake sure you have plenty of serviettes to wrap the cake in as you give it to the children or put it in party bags. The party gamesIf you are planning on entertaining the children yourself be prepared with plenty of party games to keep them amused.First AidAlthough all venues should have a fi rst aid kit it might be wise to take your own.

There are many local companies who can help organise, entertain and supply you with everything you may need to relieve you from the stress of party planning and make sure your child’s birthday party goes with a bang!PA

Nearly one million children are looked after each day in the UK and this number continues to rise so you’re not on your own when it comes to choosing the right nursery or pre-school for your child.

Where to start? It can be very overwhelming and mind boggling so don’t panic, to start with you can obtain a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Services, you can then start your research! It’s very important to book a visit to the nursery or pre-school you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are.

Some things you may wish to consider and check:Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you should enquire as to provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any?Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money. Is the nursery registered with OFSTED? Ask to see the latest OFSTED report. If you work outside of your local area would it be benefi cial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?Think of drop off’s and pick up’s and how this fi ts with your daily routineDoes the nursery provide all meals, if so what is it and where is it cooked? What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activitiesFor babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies?Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep? Is there an outside play area so children can enjoy the fresh air?Is the nursery entrance secure? Is there a settling in period? Will your child have a key worker?

Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school you and your little one are happy with you can then start to relax and look forward to watching your child fl ourish & grow amongst other children of the same age...and more importantly you can start to get some sleep at night instead of worrying!

PETS

CORNER

My name is Colin and I am a corn snake. I live in my glass tank and I am a very good pet as I like being handled by my owner and I am very easy to keep.I am originally from Florida in the USA and I used to live in a woodland and would catch mice, young rats, birds and bats and other small creatures for my dinner.I now live with my family and they feed me baby mice, baby rats and chicks. As we are constrictor snakes we like to bite our prey and then wrap our bodies around it to suffocate it before eating it but my owner gives me frozen mice, which I love. I eat 2 mice every week.We also like to have a large water bowl to drink from and this should be fi lled with bottled water rather than water from the tap. We like to have fresh water every day.We also like to hide and my owner has given me some terracotta pots and plastic pots with holes in for me to hide in. I do not need any UV light in my tank as I love natural light which shines on me from the window. I have a heat mat that is on one side of my tank and I like to move from the heat to the cold so that I can maintain a regular body temperature. We can live for up to 25 years if we get lots of tender, loving care from our owners.
