The Club

Set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport’s premier residential area – Hesketh Park – is The Hesketh Golf Club, the town’s oldest golfclub, founded in 1885. Standing alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, the clubhouse dominates the golf course, and the surrounding district. Thecourse is at the northern end of southwest Lancashire’s sand dune system, which is the home of so many great golf courses. Professionalchampionship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club’s earliest days, and the course is regularly used as a final qualifyingcourse when The Open is played at Royal Birkdale. The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes;whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. Here the course`s neighbour is a nationally renowned bird reserve, where winter visitors arerewarded by seeing great flocks of migrant geese, swans and waders. Across the estuary the mountains of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshireprovide an unforgettable backdrop. The ambience in the clubhouse and on the course is that of a traditional town golf club. The English Golf Unionhas its roots in The Hesketh Golf Club. The initiative to form the Union came from a former Hesketh Captain, who became the Union’s firstpresident. The Club’s two most famous members were the Bentley brothers - Harry and Arnold – who were possibly the most illustrious pair ofbrothers in the history of amateur golf. Significantly, as boys, they could have driven a golf ball from their garden or their school playground onto theHesketh course. The drive up to the clubhouse is alongside a short hole that Henry Cotton described as the best short hole in Lancashire. What isbeyond doubt is that emerging from Southport’s urban landscape and driving alongside this picturesque hole to approach the clubhouse, will fill avisitor with anticipation at the prospect of playing on these fine links. The Club is renowned for its friendly welcome of visitors.

1 - Hole 1

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 11

Championship - 382 Medal - 382 Regular - 365 C'ship Ladies - 346 Ladies & Juniors - 346

A dramatic opening tee shot with the clubhouse in the foreground. Playersneed to favour the right side as this will open up the green. This becomesparamount when the prevailing wind is blowing on shore from the left. Thesecond shot plays in to a green surrounded by sand dunes.

2 - Hole 2

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 15

Championship - 152 Medal - 152 Regular - 158 C'ship Ladies - 135 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A tricky par 3 with players hitting back toward the clubhouse. Hitting from anelevated tee players then hit toward a raised green. A steep drop on eitherside waits for any errant tee shot.

3 - Hole 3

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 5

Championship - 445 Medal - 445 Regular - 340 C'ship Ladies - 341 Ladies & Juniors - 0

The first of the tee shots that is really open to the elements. A forgivinglanding area from the tee box, is soon faced with a green requiring pin pointaccuracy. The green slopes from back to front so make sure you take enoughclub.

4 - Hole 4

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 17

Championship - 181 Medal - 181 Regular - 156 C'ship Ladies - 143 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A well guarded par 3 correct club selection is essential to find the putting surface. Short will find the bunkers and long will findheavy rough. A challenging two putt awaits any successful tee shot.

5 - Hole 5

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 7

Championship - 366 Medal - 366 Regular - 362 C'ship Ladies - 283 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Generally hitting in to the prevailing wind the tee shot must avoid water left and bunkers or the right. After negotiating the teeshot a blind second shot is played with a mid iron. The green slopes from back to front so your second shot should hold on thegreen.

6 - Hole 6

Par 4 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 1

Championship - 451 Medal - 451 Regular - 439 C'ship Ladies - 385 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Stroke one and it quickly becomes apparent why. Out of bounds left and right a fairway that is guarded by deep riveted bunkers. To reach the green safely in two the fairway must be hit. You are then faced with a 200 hundred yard second shot to a greenprotected by five pot bunkers and out of bounds left.

7 - Hole 7

Par 5 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 13

Championship - 513 Medal - 513 Regular - 430 C'ship Ladies - 419 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A water hazard runs from the landing area up the right hand side of thefairway and finishes at the side of the green. With out of bounds down the leftas well it is a demanding tee shot. A stream running across the fairway ahundred yards short of the green means the approach shot must be accurate.Leaving a pitch to a two tier green.

8 - Hole 8

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 9

Championship - 349 Medal - 349 Regular - 337 C'ship Ladies - 333 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Dogleg right. Four bunkers at the corner of the dogleg guard the tee shot. A driver off the tee will bring the water hazard in toplay. A fairway wood from the tee will leave a short iron in to a narrow green protected by sand.

9 - Hole 9

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 18

Championship - 346 Medal - 346 Regular - 327 C'ship Ladies - 333 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Large bunker guards the right hand side of the fairway. With grassy mounds and a stream on the left. A long second shot isrequired to a green with bunkers surrounding. A long green means that the correct club selection will make all the difference.

10 - Hole 10

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 18

Championship - 346 Medal - 346 Regular - 327 C'ship Ladies - 298 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Short dogleg right, two deep bunkers on the left look imposing as you lineyour tee shot up. A pot bunker waits for any tee shot hit to the right. A gooddrive will leave you a short iron to a green protected by two greensidebunkers.

11 - Hole 11

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 10

Championship - 184 Medal - 184 Regular - 163 C'ship Ladies - 162 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A very deceptive short hole. Always plays longer that it looks especially when the pin is on the top tier of the green. A long iron isrequired to a very thin narrow green.

12 - Hole 12

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 4

Championship - 425 Medal - 425 Regular - 377 C'ship Ladies - 344 Ladies & Juniors - 0

With the grassy mounds running across the fairway 260 yards from the tee the driver is not always the club required. Unless youare a big hitter a tee shot of 250 yards will leave you with a mid iron to the green. The green is guarded by two front bunkersshort, so long is a good option.

Page 9: Hesketh Golf Club - Golf Course Guide

13 - Hole 13

Par 5 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 14

Championship - 502 Medal - 502 Regular - 468 C'ship Ladies - 431 Ladies & Juniors - 0

The tee shot requires pinpoint accuracy, with a pond waiting for errant shots on the right, and a stream and bunkers on the left. The second shot is then a good fairway wood towards the mouth of the green, or a mid iron laying up short of the bunkers. A goodpitch will set up the ideal chance for birdie!

14 - Hole 14

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 2

Championship - 391 Medal - 391 Regular - 375 C'ship Ladies - 316 Ladies & Juniors - 0

The signature hole of the course. A daunting tee shot with out of bounds tothe right and thick heather guarding the clubhouse on the left. A good tee shotis a must here, as you need to fly over the high bunkers that guard theapproach to the green. The green slopes from front to back so club selection isimperative.

15 - Hole 15

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 8

Championship - 383 Medal - 383 Regular - 366 C'ship Ladies - 306 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A blind tee shot over a large sand dune looks imposing. The ideal line is at the church spire. With large sand dunes covered inrough on the right and the left of the hole a straight tee shot is a must . The large two tier green means that the club selection isalso important. A shot hit to the back will require a putt up and over a ridge.

Page 10: Hesketh Golf Club - Golf Course Guide

16 - Hole 16

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 16

Championship - 188 Medal - 188 Regular - 175 C'ship Ladies - 162 Ladies & Juniors - 0

Without doubt the most picturesque par three on the course. A long iron is needed usually into a strong prevailing wind. The greenis surrounded by bunkers and sand dunes often allowing an errant tee shot to finish closer to the pin than it should have!

17 - Hole 17

Par 5 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 6

Championship - 509 Medal - 509 Regular - 482 C'ship Ladies - 404 Ladies & Juniors - 0

A great dogleg left par 5. The tee shot needs to favour the right hand side if you wish to go for the green in two. Once in place onthe right hand side you must then negotiate the tall trees that guard the corner of the dogleg. A successful shot will find thegreen. You can also lay up to the right of the trees and a successful pitch will have the same result.

18 - Hole 18

Par 5 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 12

Championship - 478 Medal - 478 Regular - 450 C'ship Ladies - 408 Ladies & Juniors - 408

The tee shot needs to be threaded through the large sand dunes that are at the mouth of the fairway. Negotiate these dunes to atwo tier fairway. The spectacular finishing green requires an accurate approach as high sand dunes guard all around. With thefront of the green so narrow any shot caught at the front will prove a tricky two putt.
