Cherie and Lyle Moore at Lyle’s 90th birthday party.

The legacy of Lyle Moore is about so much more than music. But music is where it started. The call to Lyle from Gonzaga President Daniel Reidy, S.J., in December 1928 was providential. GU wanted to start a men’s glee club. Would Lyle direct the group? He said yes, of course. The rest is history.

Glee Club members started the Lyle Moore Endowed Scholarship fund in 1997 as a way to pay tribute to their mentor and leader. The goal: enable Lyle to inspire future generations of students by bestowing awards in his honor. Turns out that Lyle and his wife, Cherie, were the ones who were inspired. They were so impressed by the scholarship recipients that Lyle and Cherie made their ultimate gift to the fund, designating it as a major benefi ciary of their family trust.Lyle passed away in 2005, and Cherie in 2010. But their legacy lives on. The Moores’ estate gift tripled the size of the Lyle Moore Scholarship. Today the fund stands at over $1.5 million providing awards to students from every major, thus refl ecting the composition of the Glee Club.Since 1998, the Lyle Moore Scholarship has made 68 awards totaling $185,000 to students in need. Thanks to Lyle and Cherie Moore’s fi nal gift to Gonzaga, many more students will be inspired by the scholarship bearing his name.

The impact of the Lyle Moore Endowed Scholarship is impressive. Indeed, one could say it reaches to the stars. At least it does in the case of Cameron Gibelyou (‘07), a Lyle Moore Scholar at Gonzaga from fall 2003 to spring 2007. Cameron’s scholarship supported him in his undergraduate studies, which in turn prepared him for the University of Michigan’s Ph.D. in physics program, where he is focusing on cosmology and astronomy. “The work I’m doing is to determine whether the universe basically looks the same in every direction.

Such observations could have direct implications for our understanding of what happened in the early universe,” said Cameron. “It’s fun to consider how it’s possible to study something so incredibly distant in time and far removed from everyday experience by making detailed observations of the very same sky we see every night.”

Q&A Q&A Cynthia ReyesMethvin (’93, ’01)

with Heritage Society Member

Q. You have decided to include Gonzaga in your estate plans. Why is that?

A. I feel blessed to have received an excellent education from Gonzaga, so I want to in a sense, “pay it forward.” My estate gift will give Gonzaga the opportunity to clear an easier path for minority students to fulfi ll their dreams of achieving a Gonzaga education.

Q. Who was your favorite professor and why?A. I have two. Dr. Michael Carey and Dr. Joe Albert from the

Masters in Organizational Leadership program both inspired me through their passion-felt lectures, shared vision and a common thread that anyone can become a servant leader.

Q. You continue to stay very connected with Gonzaga; in what ways are you involved, and what motivates you to stay connected?

A. After living in Dallas for about four years, I couldn’t shake the disconnected feeling I was experiencing. I decided that if I can’t live in Spokane and enjoy the Gonzaga and Spokane communities, why not bring the magic to life here? So, I started the Dallas/Ft. Worth Gonzaga Alumni chapter. I’m proud to say that, “Together, We Are Gonzaga,” deep in the heart of Texas!

Q. Who else in your family is connected to Gonzaga and how?A. My brother, Raymond Reyes currently holds the position of

Interim Associate Academic Vice President, Center for Global Engagement at Gonzaga University. Hi Raymond!

Q. What is your favorite quote?A. “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of

life, and not something you do in your spare time.” ~Marian Wright Edelman

Enduring Tribute to a Mother’s Love

As a child, Bev Goddard always loved to read and write. School was a pleasure, and education was the ticket to a better life. The cost of a college education, though, was daunting. But it wasn’t a deal breaker for Bev’s mother: “We’ll fi nd a way,” she told her daughter, taking on extra work as a grocery store clerk to help pay the way.“My mother gave me entrance into the life I coveted,” Bev said. “I could never fi nd a way to repay her for all the sacrifi ces she made for me. I remember her saying once ‘I believe that when we bring a child into the world, we have the responsibility not only to provide the basics, but to help them achieve whatever they want to do in life.’”Bev wanted her college degree, and she chose to earn it at GU. “My mother loved Gonzaga because I loved Gonzaga,” Bev said. “She was so proud that when we were seen together during my school vacations she would tell everyone right down to the stranger on the street that I attended Gonzaga University.”“I so loved my years there,” Bev remembered of her days at GU. “I can remember feeling a sense of belonging to something greater than myself; a sense that my spirit was being nourished as well as my mind.” She found strong support from both her friends and her faith: “We frequently attended daily Mass.”

After graduating from GU, Bev received her master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Washington, thanks to a Kellogg Foundation Fellowship. Her career was spent working at UW’s medical school, the last position as a senior administrator overseeing a large staff that monitored personnel, medical staff appointments, physician’s clinical income, and federal grant funding for several medical school departments. “To say the least, it was a hard-won career with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears along the way, and a career that I took pride in achieving,” she said.Bev lost her mother in 1986. But she retains her mother’s sense of perseverance and pride in accomplishing a goal. To honor her mother’s spirit and inspiration, Bev will establish the Jacqueline Cecelia Maher Scholarship for Women at Gonzaga University through a bequest in her will. Bev wrote a short biography of her mother, to be shared with the students who will receive the scholarships. An excerpt: “I can guarantee that each and every one of you who receive this scholarship will join the community of those she loves. Think of her each time you make an A in a course, or give your best and fail miserably; think of her when you believe you have been given a raw deal, or when you have succeeded beyond your wildest dreams; but most of all, think of her on your graduation day, and say a prayer of thanks for she will be standing next to you, just as she stood next to me, bursting her buttons with pride and glowing with happiness.”For the full Jacqueline Cecelia Maher Scholarship biography go to: www.gonzaga.edu/heritage-s11-02.

Heritage Society Members Joe (’43) and Edna Deichl on Gift Annuities

“Considering today’s market, the best thing we ever did was establish two charitable gift annuities with Gonzaga,” says Edna. These annuities provide them with reliable fi xed quarterly payments that will last their lifetimes. Eventually, what remains in the annuities will be used to create the Joseph and Edna Deichl Family Endowed Scholarship.

Under extended charitable IRA legislation, individuals age 70½ or older can make direct, tax-free rollover gifts of up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA to Gonzaga University. While the rollover amount does not qualify for a charitable income tax deduction, you won’t have to realize it as taxable income. In addition, amounts rolled over will count toward your required minimum distribution. For more information, please contact us.
