*Nursery is provided for all services*

It was the early 1980’s and I was sitting in the corner of Rip Hewes Stadium in Dothan,

Alabama. I can still remember the smell of fresh cut grass combined with the smell of

freshly baked bread from the Colonial Bread Company. I was sitting in the corner of the

field listening to the sounds of a Friday night football game. Nothing in my life motivated

me more than the smells, the sounds of the crowd, and hearing the drum core set the cadence

for our band to march into the stadium. As a high school football player, this was the time

of anticipation for what was about to happen on the field. I could not wait to line up behind

the large banner the cheerleaders made for us to break through as we ran onto the football

field to our high school fight song. For me, waiting was the hardest part of the game. I have

come to realize the same is true in my spiritual journey; that it is in the waiting that God is

preparing us for what is going to happen next.

The last two weeks for our family has been full of packing boxes and making all the

arrangements for a move. This week we saw all our earthly possessions packed very tightly

into a moving truck and saw that truck pull out of our driveway. All this happened on Tues-

day and we were told that we would not see these things again until Saturday. Transitional

times for United Methodist pastors is one of the hardest times in ministry. Once again, we

find ourselves in the waiting game. We have been told that we must take two Sundays off

and that makes it even harder, because inside, I am ready to go. I am ready to meet my new

church family and share vision of doing ministry together. Just like sitting in the football

stadium on go, I am sitting on go ready to get started in ministry. I am excited to be coming

to Heritage United Methodist Church and am looking forward to meeting everyone, but I

know it is in this waiting time that God is preparing all of us for something big. Next week I

will be trying to organize my office and would invite anyone to come by to say hello, as I

am a little ADD and could always use a distraction from unpacking my old office into the

new office.

Our family is looking forward to connecting with all of you in the Heritage United Method-

ist family. I grew up in Dothan, Alabama. My favorite hobbies are watching Auburn foot-

ball, playing Disk Golf, playing at regular golf, and running. Valerie grew up in Marianna.

She has a degree in teaching from Florida State, but she still cheers for Auburn. Her favorite

hobbies are scrapbooking, crocheting, and her new-found hobby is quilting. Jared is a

Senior in high school. He plays football, baseball, and loves to watch Auburn play football.

This will be the first time my daughter has not moved with us to a new appointment. She is

a senior at The University of West Florida with a major in accounting. She works full time

for Publix and is engaged to be married December 30th.

My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will help us grow together in vision and ministry in the

days to come. Remember it is in the waiting that God is preparing

us for the many great things He has for us to do together to win lost

people to Him. My life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6 that reads, Trust in

the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

n all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Looking forward to what God has planned for us. Bro. Kevin

What Where When

Freedom. It’s something we Americans, and Christians, are reminded of and celebrate during the month of July but, if we are honest with ourselves, often take for granted most other months, days, and moments of the year. We are so blessed to live in a country where people have given blood, sweat, and tears to let us speak freely, practice our religion without governmental persecution, and pursue our hearts' calling (amongst other freedoms too numerous to mention)!

As beings created by God in their image (since They also have free will), making decisions and choices on how to live, what to believe, how to treat others, and what is best in this world is at the core of who we are (Genesis 1:26-27). Even trying not to make decisions is utilizing our free will to make a choice. Freedom is so incredibly valuable to us as humans, because we have free will and want to choose how to live the best life possible. What does God say about using our free will to achieve that end, and what does it look like?

While that last question weighs heavy on my heart, it could also be rephrased this way: amongst a culture that doesn't know or reflect God's love, how are you using your freedom and free will as a Christian? As followers of Christ, we need to be very intentionally thinking through and answering this for ourselves (while consulting, and abiding by, Scripture and prayer) every moment of every day, because the culture we are immersed in seeks more and more to fulfill its desires apart from God's will. How will we respond to those we don't agree with? How will we treat and talk to others we encounter, live with, and work around? What would Jesus say, and how would He act in those situations?

Here are some scriptures and quotes from fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that have really challenged and helped me, and I hope, through God's Spirit and guidance, they do they same for you!

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:43-48).

"Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone's lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate." - Rick Warren

“If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.”- Augustine of Hippo

Heritage United Methodist Church

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to

prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Sunday School, or Sunday morning Bible study, provides Bible lessons beginning with our little ones in the nursery through our

senior adults. Each class is designed to help us grow in our understanding of the Bible and how to apply it to our everyday lives.

Classes meet each Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and is open to everyone!

WINGS of FAITH (All ages) Class for Bible Study, with a special focus on the daily stress we face in everyday life.

Emphasis is to bring us together as a church family so that we not only react to problems but anticipate one another's needs.

Anticipate bringing in guest speakers/programs which will assist in enhancing our quality of life. All conversation shared in this

group will be considered confidential! No age restriction. Join us upstairs, last room on the right, in the Education Building.

BROTHER MATT'S ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: (All adults) Teaching in the book of I Timothy.

Relevant and timely Bible lessons that speak to the concerns and issues facing Christians in these days. Open discussion format

where participation is encouraged. Join us upstairs in the Education Building.

LAMPLIGHTERS: (All ages) The Lamplighters Sunday School Class—In June - we will be in the book of Judges - the history of Israel after the death of Joshua. God raised up a series of leaders called Judges. Empowered by God, they helped deliver the people from their enemies. July - we will be looking at how God called various prophets at different times for specific purposes, including Moses, Isaiah and Amos. August - we will see how God continued to call and work through ordinary people in the early church including Stephen, Peter and Paul. Leader is Roy Eason.

WOMEN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: (All women) The Woman's Sunday School Class has been in the books of Titus and 1 & 2 Timothy. It has been an wonderful and timely study addressing the behavior of the early churches in Ephesus and Crete. The instructions on how the Church body should function from the letters written by Paul have given us much to discuss and we would love for anyone to join in Sunday mornings downstairs in the Education Building at 9:30 a.m. New faces are always welcome!! You can be single, married it doesn't matter. This class has proven to provide a space for our Women to share their thoughts on the Bible. Which is the only book we study. Leader: Anita Jones

YOUNG MARRIED COUPLES: (Open to all couples) Finding relevance and truth in God's word. Leaders, Stephen & Angie Parker.

ABLAZE STUDENT MINISTRY SUNDAY SCHOOL: (7th thru 12th graders) We focus on the many

awesome attributes of our holy, loving, Trinitarian God revealed in scripture, and discuss, through scouring the Bible and practical

application, how insanely life changing letting Him be your heart's main desire each and every day can be! We also discuss liturgi-

cal (the church calendar), global, local, and personal events as they occur and are laid on our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Talking about

their significance for us as followers of God, and the church as a whole, in light of the Bible is truly an enlightening and humbling

experience! We would love for you to come join us in the Chapel. Leader, Jamie Farquhar.

CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL: (Kindergarten thru 6th graders) We are using the DEEP BLUE Sunday School

Series where kids dive deep into the Bible. Through Bible stories, games, puzzles, and Bible Study, kids will learn how to live as

disciples of Jesus. Join us downstairs in the Education Building. Leader, Shannon Nelson.

CHILDREN'S CHURCH (11:15 am): (4 years thru 3rd graders) Children join us each Sunday in Children's Church

for an interesting Bible Study and some fun and exciting follow-on activities. Children will go to Children's Church after Praise and

Worship.

NURSERY AND PRESCHOOL: (Crib Babies, Toddlers up to 4 years old) A loving, safe, and age-appropriate

environment welcomes your young children into our church family. Your child will receive lots of TLC by our CPR certified staff

and volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for your little ones to socialize and bond with other children while hearing biblical

stories and seeing Bible characters. Nursery is located on the first floor, Education Building. Leader, Nikki Hagler.
