perennials, annuals, biennials, bulbous plants , herbs ,

groundcovers, & ornamental grasses through a variety of

instructional methods . Knowledge on nomenclature, plant

characteristics , culture , & maintenance will be applied in

actual settings as well as in design opportunities .

Goals: The students will be able to identify & correctly name a variety of herbaceous

ornamentals . During laboratory sessions , the students will have the opportunity to practice hands on approaches to planting & maintaining

herbaceous plants .

Expected Outcomes: After successfully completing the course, each student will be

able to: * Identify & write correctly the scientific name of more than

120 herbaceous ornamental. * List & describe common maintenance techniques used to keep herbaceous ornamentals thriving in Jordan & elsewhere

landscapes.*Recognize & evaluate common pests & other problems with

herbaceous ornamentals .

*Recommend appropriate control measures of common

problems .

*Compare & analyze the accuracy & importance of

information from various sources for consumers of

herbaceous ornamentals .

*Design perennial beds cooperatively with class members using the plants learned .

*Show & defend the group perennial design project to class

members .

*Design an annual carpet bedding scheme using the plants

learned .

*Research & report on the identifying characteristics of an

annual plants to other class members .

Course Requirements: Exams. No make up exams will be given except for death in the family, serious illness, or to the direction of the instructor. Two mid Term exams (one hour each) & one final exam (2 hours) are worth 100 point each. Exams will cover material presented in lecture, & recommended texts. The final exam is cumulative. ID Quizzes. No make up quizzes will be given. Ten ID quizzes are scheduled during labs. The lowest score of the 10 quizzes will be dropped. Each quiz will contain 5 plant specimens to be identified. The students will correctly record the genus ( 3 points ) , species ( 3 points ) , common name ( 2 points ) , & family ( 2 points ) , for a total of 10 points per plant ( 50 points per quiz ) . Correct spelling is required. Quizzes are cumulative. ID book. For each plant ID lab period, each student will draw the given plants on his/her ID book showing plant parts & morphology. Each student will submit his / her book towards end of the lab period which will be corrected by the teaching assistant & returned to the student at the beginning of the coming lab period. Each lab period will worth 100 point, for a total of 1000. Final ID & Final Lab Exams. No make up final ID & final lab exams will be given except for the exceptions mentioned in exams. Two final ID plant exams (250 point each) & two final lab exams (100 point each) are scheduled during labs. Each final ID exam will contain 25 specimens to identify. Scoring will be identical to the weekly plant ID quizzes. Perennial Project & Presentation (PP&P). Working in groups, the students will create a garden design using perennial plants in this course & then present the design to the class during the lab session (100 point). Annual Design Project (ADP). Working individually, the students will create an annual carpet bedding design using the annual plants presented in this course (100 point). Annual Presentation (AP). Working in pairs, the students will research an annual of his / her choice & present a 5 minute lesson on the ID characteristics & culture of the selected annual during a class session (100 point).Course Points: Assignment Pts .
