Yoga continues to grow in popularity. In a questionnaire
administered every five years as part of the National Health Interview Survey, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the National Center of Health Statistics found that the number of people practicing yoga increased dramatically between 2002 and 2012, when approximately 21 million adults acknowledged practicing yoga. That figure equated to nearly double the number of people who practiced yoga just 10 years earlier.
The almost meteoric rise in popularity of yoga can likely be traced to many factors, including a growing awareness among the general public regarding the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on both short- and long-term health. An essential component of a healthy lifestyle involves taking steps to protect our bodies, and that can include making an effort to reduce the aches and pains that are often associated with aging.
The Benefits of Including Yoga in Your Exercise Routine
“The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome,” explained Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified
osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor.
The American Osteopathic Association notes the benefits of yoga extend even further than relieving chronic pain. According to the
AOA, yoga can help men, women and even children increase their flexibility as well as help them build stronger, more toned muscles. Additional benefits of yoga include weight reduction, improved cardiovascular and circulatory health and improved energy and vitality.
But the benefits of yoga extend beyond the physical to the mental. The American Psychological Association notes that several studies have shown that yoga can help strengthen social attachments, reduce stress and relieve anxiety, depression and insomnia. For example, a 2012 study from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that a particular type of yoga that included brief, daily meditation reduced the stress levels of caregivers tasked with caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
One of the more attractive aspects of yoga is that it requires

little or no financial commitment on the part of the people who practice it. Unlike fitness centers that typically require members to commit to yearly contracts or even potentially costly month-to-month memberships, many yoga studies do not require long-term commitments, instead asking that customers pay a small amount each time they visit if they are hesitant to commit to memberships. In addition, yoga requires just a mat and some appropriate clothing, ideally clothing that’s conducive to
flexibility but not so loose that it will prevent you from performing certain poses.
Before including yoga in your exercise regimen, speak with your physician. Once you get the green light, look for a beginner’s course, explaining to your instructor that you are just starting out. Many yoga studios offer introductory classes that help men and women acclimate their bodies to yoga and the various poses it entails before moving on to more challenging poses.

2The next piece I found at the Habitat Re-Store for $10. This piece is mainly meant to be used as an
outdoor decoration during the holidays (usually with lights spiraling around it). Another use for structures like this is to take them out into your garden or flower bed during the summer and give your vines something to climb. Other great pieces to use as a stand-in for trellises are antique chairs, old ladders and old window frames.
3Pallets are showing up in hundreds of DIY projects! The materials are easy to come by and it’s wonderful
to reuse something that otherwise would be left sitting in a back lot. The important thing is to know where your pallets come from. Steer clear of anything that has been treated with chemicals or was used to hold things that could stain or contaminate your wall. This wall decor is made from old wooden pallets that were cut, sanded, stained and put back together in the shape of Ohio. I have an obsession with all things Ohio and the more you can incorporate things into your house that represent the places and people you love, the more it will feel like a home. For this project you would start with a paper template cut out in the shape of what you plan on creating. The pallet wood is pretty rough when you first get the pallet taken apart and pull all the nails out with a hammer (this is the tough part) but with some sanding and staining it can be transformed. Using the template to cut the wooden pieces to the right lengths and dimensions, you can then nail the front pieces to a couple of back pieces of pallet wood. Let it dry and then

project is a paper plate for the base, a hot glue gun and some patience. Rolling all the pages into cones takes time, but the end result is beautiful! Simply hot glue your paper cones to the base, hang and enjoy. (The

hang it in a favorite room. This project was made by my husband, Jack Rumes and it hangs in our living room.
4Make a photo collage to go along with a favorite wall hanging. This photo collage hangs in our kitchen and
is centered around our family meals together. Going through old photos and picking your favorites to place on the wall brings back wonderful memories that you can enjoy every day as you eat together. The best way to execute this is to buy all of the frames and any wall decor or artwork you plan on using ahead of time, then lay everything out on the floor to plan the size and spacing before you start to hang your pieces. All that’s left to do is transfer the pieces for the layout on your floor to the wall and voila - instant memories at mealtime.
5 Here are some repurposing ideas for an old heat grate cover that I found at the Habitat Re-Store for just
$5! One idea is to fill the old grate with potting soil and make it into a planter. The only additional cost on this project is whatever you spend on the flowers. Simply use the existing nail holes in the back side of the heat grate cover to hang your project and give your back deck a little pop of color. The main thing with this project, just like with any window box, is to make sure you keep it well watered.
Normally a heat grate cover that is being replaced would just be thrown away, but sometimes an object has hidden potential just waiting to be brought out. Another idea I thought of for this grate cover was to use it as a decorative shelf to display some of the old books in our bedroom. I collect old books and am always looking for ways to show them off, rather than just stacking them on an end table. Here you can see the heat grate cover turned upside down and hung on the wall in our bedroom with the edge acting as a shelf.

A Splash of Paint
Changing paint colors is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to add a fresh new look to the interior or exterior of a home.
Both exterior and interior paint can be used to protect homes and make strong impressions. Painting projects are fun and can be easy, but not all projects are so simple. Homeowners may need to exercise patience and devote an ample amount of time to get the job done right. One errant drip is all it takes to turn a perfect paint job into a colorful mess.
While paints are much safer now than in years past, they still need to be handled with caution and disposed of with care after the job is done. Painting can be a tricky project because the fumes and chemicals found in many paints make these products more difficult to dispose of.
The Environmental Protection Agency says homeowners in the United State throw out 64 million gallons of paint per year. While latex paints are not considered hazardous waste, they should be recycled. Oil-based paints, however, are considered hazardous household waste (HHW) and must be disposed of properly.
All homeowners should check with their trash and recycling collection centers regarding the proper way to dispose of paints, stains and varnishes. It’s also possible to visit Earth911.com and find a disposal facility online.

Consumers who have adopted a greener way of
living may include organic foods and beverages in their eco-friendly plans. Such men and women may be very familiar with the way organic foods are produced, including how these foods are made without the use of chemical pesticides or artificial growth additives.
Organic items are not limited to just food and drink. Organic and sustainable clothing has exploded in popularity, providing yet another way to help preserve the environment and possibly your wallet.
Currently there are no global or even domestic standards for organic or sustainable textiles like there are for organic produce. According to Organic Clothing, an eco-fashion resource, any product sold in the United States, regardless of where it was grown or
produced, that carries the USDA Organic
logo must have been inspected
by a certified agent of

USDA certification program. Textiles do not need to be 100 percent organic to carry organic labeling, according to the USDA. Other labeling standards may be overseen by The International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements, The Organic Trade Association, and EKO/KRAV, a Scandinavian organization.
Clothing fibers that do not meet strict organic requirements may fall under a broader umbrella term of “sustainable” fibers. These may include garments made from recycled materials or eco-friendly, man-made fibers. These, too, have their share of benefits.
The materials may have been produced using less water, fewer pesticides and fewer herbicides than conventional farming methods. Organic cotton, for example, is produced from nongenetically engineered seed. These factors combine to help keep unnecessary chemicals from entering the environment.
Clothing produced from recycled materials, such as plastics, keeps materials
that are slow to decompose or those that do not break down from reaching landfills. The company ECOALF repurposes discarded fishing nets, plastic bottles, used tires,
post-consumer coffee, and post-industrial wool, among other materials into functional clothing. The company notes that one backpack made from recycled plastic bottles

can keep 135 bottles from littering the environment.
Reusing or repurposing clothing pieces can extend the life of a wardrobe. Emma Watson was in the news lately for the sustainable dress she wore to the Met Gala in New York. The dress consisted of three pieces that were not only made from recycled materials, but could be worn again in a casual setting. The
flowing dress component could be removed to reveal a pair of trousers and sleek top perfect for cruising the town. Both pieces could also be worn separately with other items from Emma’s pre-existing wardrobe.
Remaining conscious of and open minded about the different ways clothing may be worn will not only same money in the end, but increase the use of various
clothing articles. A sports jacket originally purchased as part of a suit outfit can be repurposed and paired with a summer dress to give the ensemble a business casual feel. Not only does the pairing provide increased opportunity to wear that summer dress, but the new outfit revitalizes your wardrobe without spending additional money.
In addition to choosing sustainable options, consumers may want to research locally-produced clothing. Keep in mind that the benefits of organic and sustainable fibers may
be negated by energy consumption of long shipping routes and transportation choices. Check labels to see where merchandise is produced and research the manufacturer to verify its production processes.
Choosing sustainable clothing is another way to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. What may have started out as clothing produced from cotton, silk, hemp, and jute has expanded to include many upcycled materials as well.

On this one the coffee is great, but the caramel is strong. Unless you are a big fan of caramel, I would not recommend it as the flavor of choice. Unlike how the vanilla flavor was more like the supporting cast in the flavor medley, caramel seems to be taking the main stage.
OVERALL- In a pinch it can be easily found, the quality is high, but so are the calories.

Gevalia offers a line of iced coffee made with almond milk which is great if you enjoy the flavor. The draw back is that the vanilla and caramel iced coffee does not carry the distinct flavor as much as other brands.

on flipping a home often stirs a sense of “I can do that” in many viewers, but how accurate are these ‘reality’ TV shows? Perhaps the floors are covered in worn carpeting or the kitchen is closed off from the rest of the house, is it possible for an average Jane to renovate her home?
Trisha Swick is an experienced flipper and updater of homes, taking the projects through the entire process from the purchasing to the selling. In
Trisha’s experience, the scope of the home renovation shows is more TV magic than reality due to an average person’s budget, time constraint and number of people working on a project.
The first step when the decision is made to renovate a house is to sketch out a game plan and budget. Average Janes may not have the high and seemingly flexible budgets thrown around reality TV shows, but the process need not be hopeless. With the right plan, purchases and ability to do some of the work herself, renovating a home on a budget and within a timeline is possible.
Once the budget is established identifying the property for renovation is the next step of the process. There are several options when looking for a property, if your existing home is not the target. Trisha advises against purchasing a home through a sheriff sale because in this situation there is not an opportunity to get into the house and see what will have to be invested in the renovation. Technically, the property may be sold for less, but in the end a flipper may spend more money fixing it up than the home is worth. The best way to purchase a home for renovation is to watch various realtors’ websites. Trisha admits that she is constantly cruising realtor websites to find the properties she chooses to flip. When the realtors are showing the property, Trisha will evaluate the layout and condition, taking notes on what will have to be done during the renovation. This initial

Building off of the initial impression of the property, Trisha will visualize her family within the home. Within her current project home, the kitchen and the living area share a wall. Thinking about mornings with children, Trisha has decided to put in a pass-through so that a parent may watch the children in the living area while making breakfast. As the work progresses, the initial plan may be modified due do other problems that present

themselves along the way. Other updates may consist of bringing the washer and dryer to the main floor. This type of update follows the trends of society and may dictate the ease with which the end product is sold. Being aware of current preferences can increase the value of the property.
The demo process is perhaps one stage that everyone can get excited about. Acknowledging the areas that require demolition, as well as those walls that are load bearing, the rest is relatively simple. Trisha is currently creating a master bedroom out of two small rooms, which meant demolishing an entire wall and putting in a bathroom.
Generally tearing down a couple walls or removing the flooring is basic enough, but there are some projects better left to the professionals. Lacking the training in the finer points of plumbing and electrical work, Trisha relies on her husband and contractors. Working
with professionals ensures the job is done correctly and won’t cause problems for the future home owners.
When the project is in the demolition stage it is easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of work required to put the pieces back together. Taking one day and project at a time, Trisha focuses on the small projects that will accomplish the end goal.
Keeping in mind the ever-present budget, Trisha suggests salvaging as much material as possible. Using as much of the existing materials is ideal, even if it is moved from one room to another. While renovating a home Trisha often drags items home whether she has a plan for it or not. Sometimes this material is used on another home or a smaller project. On her current renovation,
wood pieces that have been removed from an upstairs bedroom were taken home and used to create shelves on a ladder. The resulting unique piece is both beautiful and functional and cost very little.
Often times having the proper tools is half the battle, but owning all that equipment will be expensive. A tile saw, for example, is available with various capacities. There are reasonably priced tile saws perfect for cutting a back splash, but if the renovation is only for one project, individuals may not want to invest in the more expensive equipment required to cut floor tile. If you are only looking at completing one renovation project then purchasing less expensive equipment, researching rental options or hiring a professional may be the best course for the long run.
Each project increases with excitement as pieces of the puzzle come together. Bringing the laundry to the main floor and creating a master suit are two minimal changes Trisha has made that will increase the value of the home. Women interesting in completing a home renovation project of their own are encouraged to do their research before beginning. There are a lot of books, websites and YouTube channels with tips and tricks on do-it-yourself projects. Being selective on what resources are chosen as a reference and knowing which projects are better left to the professionals is a hazard that cannot be stressed enough. “It is good to have a partner whether you are a man or a woman, but there is no reason a woman can’t complete anything she wishes to do,” states Trisha.

Home Reno- Highlights
Upstairs BedroomThe drywall in this bedroom was not completed correctly
resulting in ill-fitting seams. To cover up their mistake, the previous owners used pieces of darkly stained wood to cover the seams. The room also contained entry points to two crawl spaces. Unfortunately, whoever completed the renovation work before Trisha did not leave access; effectively cutting off the available storage. Trisha initially planned to fix the caulking job around the wood seams and paint everything white, in the hope that this would brighten up the room. When she got a closer look and realized the extent of the mistakes, Trisha decided to take off the wood seams and fix the drywall issues. This room will need to function as a bedroom, so a closet will be built into a wall as well. In order to take advantage of the storage possibilities, the entry points will be left open in some manner such as a small door.
Landscaping At some point the owners tried to build their own
pond, which is evident from the coffee canister used in the pump mechanism. Still in the early stages of the landscaping, Trisha is not certain what will be done about this area of the spacious backyard. The house is also complete with two decks. One is in the back of the home complete with an extremely steep ramp that is impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to use. The ramp will have to go and the rest of the deck will have to be updated possibly adding a couple steps on the other end. The deck in the front of the home provides the only entry point to the front door and was not built to code. There are not enough support beams and the railing, while being plenty high, has sections where the slates are too far apart. At this stage, Trisha plans to keep the multi level aspect to the deck, but will have to bring the entire structure up to code with the addition of support beams and slates.
Updating the look of a room doesn’t need to involve
tearing down walls and completing large projects. The renovation can be as simple as splashing the wall with a new coat of paint or updating the art. Artwork can dictate the mood of a room and give a glimpse into the personality and style of a homeowner.
The presentation of a piece of art can create a focal point within the room and act as the connecting feature for other elements. In a room of neutral earth tones, a bold or brightly colored piece of artwork would naturally become the focal point of the room and add a touch of color. Perhaps the piece is a painting by a well-known artist such as Picasso or an embroidered length of fabric completed by a beloved grandmother, either way making it a feature will emphasise its importance to the owner.
Family documents such as beautifully decorated birth announcements from the 1800s are generally of a neutral pallet consisting of browns, grays and maybe some deep reds. These neutral tones can provide a soft place for the eye to land and tie other elements together. This type of piece will also provide a conversation starter with any guest who enters the room.
Through the combination of mat coloring and size, or width exposure, the appearance of the artwork can be very different. One of the functions of mat board is to draw the eye into the artwork and varying widths have different affects. A comfortable width is generally two inches on all sides of the piece. To increase the emphasis of the artwork without changing the mat width, employing matting with a V-groove on the inside edge is recommended.

Rustic, eclectic, contemporary, classic and more can be achieved through the style of frame used around a piece. Choosing from the various styles of frames can seem daunting on your own, but consulting with a professional such as Loren Fedorowicz, owner of Walnut Street Gallery, can eliminate any aesthetic worry.
Loren considers several factors when evaluating a piece of art for framing. The most important factor is the personality and style of the client. If the frame is not compatible with the client’s taste then it will not blend well with other items in the home. Further framing options will be eliminated due to the mood of the piece itself. A client who brings in a work of art from their grandmother’s attic may require a frame style that is
more traditional and formal feeling. On the other end of the spectrum, if historic tools are the art in question, then the framing options may sway toward a rustic style.
Choosing to have an item framed may also be made for preservation (or archival). In this case, Walnut Street Gallery carries a well equipped line of conservation grade backing board, glass panes and mat board. The different grades vary in reflection control and clarity, but all work to protect the integrity of artwork.
It is important to keep in mind that the classification of ‘art’ is only limited by the individual preference. Paint on canvas does not always jive with a person’s style, but framing a spoon collection kept by a great grandmother may be their cup of tea. Whatever the choice, the use of art to style a room is always an option that will increase your enjoyment of the space.

Five False Flea Facts Pet Owners Need to Know!
Let’s face it, fleas are nasty parasites and difficult to eradicate.
Anyone who has suffered through an infestation of fleas knows that these bugs are programmed to survive. In ideal conditions, fleas can complete their life cycle in just 12 days and add thousands of new
flea offspring to the environment. Understanding some common false flea facts can help keep your pet “itch” free this year!
Myth #1: Fleas go away during winter. While it is true that a good part of the country sees a decrease in fleas during the colder months, they can survive through the winter by taking advantage of our own desires to be comfortable. Fleas thrive at temperatures above 65 degrees, making our homes a perfect winter refuge
Myth #2: Natural remedies are safe and effective flea control methods. For many pet owners, avoiding man-made chemicals is vitally important. However, “organic” products are often ineffective at controlling fleas. One favorite, garlic, is purported to repel fleas, but scientific studies showed no effect. Anecdotal evidence may abound, but chances are pet owners who use these

Myth #3: Chemical pesticides are harmful to my pets and to the environment. Historically, this is true! Organophosphates like Diazanon, have been banned by the EPA due to cancer causing properties and environmental impacts. But newer advances in pest control have given us very safe products that can be used on our pets without fear of damaging the environment. It is very important however to choose a product that not only kills the adult flea, but also leaves a barrier in the carpet that will kill the well protected larvae or cocoon after it hatches.
Myth #4: Fleas are resistant to these new chemicals – even the products my veterinarian has. With stories of “super-bug” bacteria making headlines, it is not difficult to imagine a super flea that shakes off pesticides like water. The truth is that current products available through veterinarians have a great track record of killing fleas. Many pharmaceutical companies have come out with even better chemical compounds as flea treatments or preventatives in recent years like Bravecto, which also kills most species of ticks. The advantage of
this product, available through a veterinarian, is one chewable pill kills fleas and ticks for 3 months.
Myth #5: There is no difference between flea products from the grocery store and the veterinary products. Unfortunately, this myth is the cause of many emergency room visits and pet deaths. Products that are found in mass merchants may contain older insecticides. This could mean that they are simply less effective, but in some cases, these products have actually killed pets, especially cats.
Your veterinarian has access to at least 10 different flea products, such as Bravecto, Activyl, and Nexgard, that are known to be non-toxic to your pet and deadly to fleas and ticks. Oral formulations, as well as topical products are available and your veterinarian will help you choose. Don’t leave your pet’s comfort and your safety in the hands of someone who doesn’t know your pet…see your veterinarian for the best advice on avoiding the plague of fleas!

2 teaspoons grated lime or lemon zest3⁄4 cup sugar, divided3⁄4 cup water2 pounds kiwi fruit (about 8 kiwi fruit), peeled and quartered6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice2 limes, quartered
In a small bowl, mash the zest with 1 teaspoon of the sugar to release the oils. Combine the remaining sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Cook until the syrup is clear. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. In a food processor or blender, purée the kiwi fruit with the juice, syrup and sugared zest. Transfer to a container, cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 3 hours.
Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or, to freeze without an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a 9-inch nonreactive square pan. Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and freeze just until solid, 2 to 3 hours. Scrape out into an electric mixer or food processor and process briefly until light and fluffy. Serve at once or transfer to a container, cover, and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. At serving time, garnish with a lime wedge to squeeze over each serving.
