Nature will not be fooled. She will not cede any-thing that she is not prepared to cede. We can’tcopy the beauty of nature’s creations. We can’treproduce the sensations that natural materialstransmit to us – stones as works of art, wood, ac-companied by profound, unique grains and col-ours, metals, which, when manually crafted, ema-nate a warmth whose presence was unsuspected, and soft velvety leathers. Natural materials aremarvellously unique works which, with their awsand limits, will always vary and can never be per-fectly reproduced. These works are beautiful atbirth and even more beautiful when the passingyears add to them the signs of wear and ageing. Our production and design tasks all aim to seam-lessly blend design practices and the expressivepotency of natural materials themselves – a con-vergence of the intellectual value of creativenessand the eloquence of the voice of nature. We care-

fully select our natural materials piece by piece. We examine a block, log or trunk and then care-fully process it, taking into account its imperfec-tions and aws, which we consider elements ofexpression of truly extraordinary, unique value. Inorder to exalt the incredible traits of the materi-als that we use, we apply nishes which, likewise, are based on natural products. It is also vitally im-portant for us that all procedures reect Henge’srespect for the environment.Henge’s collections include not only variouswoods, stones, hides and fabrics but also extraor-dinary materials such as steel mesh, baked anddecorated lava, processed in accordance with theancient traditions of Sicily, ceramic stoneware, glass and, lastly, a vitally important ‘material’ forarchitects – light. We ‘process’ light using ad-vanced technological resources.

Henge uses many wood typologies, including solid, sliced and sawn woods. We use all traditional woodsand, in very many cases, our woods are heat-treat-ed. Heat-treatment constitutes a recent, advanced,hi-tech procedure capable of altering the wood’schemical structure and physical, mechanical andbiological properties. The process, whereby the col-our is changed, and darkened in a uniform man-ner, impacts the full thickness of the material andenhances the material’s biological hardness, in turnprotecting the material against absorption of humid-ity while ensuring stability. The wood is thereforesuitable for outdoor use. We subject our acacia, oak, eucalyptus and chestnut to various heat-treatmentand colouring procedures (ranging from medium toblack, for a matt nish in all cases), while conserv-ing the grain and inimitable grain depths of naturalwoods.

Swamp oak is a material of even greater worth. It is a fossil wood of extraordinary elegance andrenement with its striking natural smoky greycolour. Swamp oak is an exceedingly rare mate-rial. We spare no effort in our search for swampoak throughout Europe, and we purchase when-ever it becomes available. The colour qualities ofthe plants must conform precisely with our speci-cations. We therefore cannot always guaranteeavailability. This wood, the outcome of a processof fossilization, reaches us after resting for hun-dreds and even thousands of years underground. Amasterpiece produced by the encounter betweennature and time, swamp oak may be considered achronicle of our planet’s history. It is a wood which,by its very nature, does not lead to deforestation.

Our approach to materials entails careful selectionand the adoption of original processing procedures. Our aim is, at all times, to bring out each of thepotentials of materials in terms of their expressivecapacities, through applications which harnessthese potentials and guide them toward the mean-ings which these materials shall acquire whentransformed into products for the home. This ap-proach also takes in the metals we use. Metals areonly apparently cold and impersonal. They actu-ally conserve great expressive potentials. We tendto use black iron and brass. These metals have lit-tle to do with modern industrial procedures, which

seek perfection and which ignore the true natureand ‘personality’, or character, of the materials be-ing processed. Our approach is very different. Theexpressive potentials of these materials lies, webelieve, in their typical imperfections. Thick slabs, pipes, or simple or laminate sheets have all beenused for our homes since time immemorial. Hengeprocesses these materials by means of simple,crafts-based methods, burnishing them accordingto our own nishing recipe, thus bringing out theextraordinary ‘personalities’, or characters, of eachof the materials we use.

Henge.

Among the masterpieces of nature, stone is oneof the Earth’s great marvels. Stone is a permanentfeature in our lives, and always has been. In termsof colour, grains, surface pattern and roughnessof texture, each block or slab is unique, extraor-dinarily beautiful and expressive. If the item is tobe fully exploited, great care and sensitivity arerequired during handling. We seek out and selectvery particular stones. In many cases, our stonesare of a kind that is rarely used, or they pose thetoughest challenges. Our approach differs greatlyfrom the kinds of approach industrial operatorswould generally consider acceptable. We acceptthe aws, defects and difculties encounteredboth in securing supplies and in processing, and

we select the working recipe that will bring outthe extraordinary expressiveness of the materialwe use. Our range of stones is truly vast. We usethe most common stones, but we are particular-ly keen on using unique, exclusive materials theend-effects of which are derived from the materialitself together with the totally customized process-ing procedure. The results are peerless. Whichis our favourite stone? Cappuccino. We work theCappuccino stone according to our own recipe, en-tailing matt micro-sandblasting. Cappuccino is anarabesqued grain stone. Its white-brown-grey col-ouring is hard to pin down, but decidedly elegant.Cappuccino is a very tough challenge. It is alsouniquely… Henge.

Every year, we select specic, exclusive leathers foreach of our collections. Some are soft and natural, featuring the tiny aws which we refuse to coverup or ‘coat’. Our stone-wash leathers are agedand endowed with nuanced nishes. Our extraor-dinary amazingly soft nubuck products are also anoteworthy part of our ‘repertoire’, for which wehave received considerable praise. Like our rangeof leathers, our colour range, too, is original andpersonal. The colours are selected and developedon the basis of the specic needs arising out of

our collections. The materials are applied manu-ally on the basis of solutions inspired by our re-search activities and also by our overall approachto the tasks at hand. These include raw cut, stitch-ings adopted in the leather goods sector, and re-interpretation of classic, traditional processes alsooccasionally involving use of special machinery forspecic processing or stitching procedures.

Italy boasts many artisan concerns. Some consistin small workshops which, over time, have devel-oped unique, inimitable techniques and processesborn from the considerable talents and from theancient crafting skills handed down from one gen-eration to the next, for which Italy is renownedworldwide. These elements go into the products, the semi-nished items and the processes of ex-cellence that we seek out locally and apply to ourown range of products. We see this in our metal meshes, which are stain-less steel fabrics or textiles produced in a smallcrafts workshop using stainless steel threads. Thefabric is very ne, soft and silky to the touch. Bur-

nished to a cobalt blue colour, the mesh is usedfor layering the glass elements in our Q-Case prod-uct. This versatile, exible burnished stainlesssteel tweed mesh is pleasing to the touch and isgiven a bronze colour for use in various Henge fur-niture components such as the tops of the X-Cage,or the Y-Light lamp. Another extraordinary item isour baked Etna lava, hand-decorated by the Madea Mano crafts concern. We adopt old, traditionalSicilian techniques to apply contemporary texturesto natural stone bases. These Italian excellencesshare with us our approach to homemaking as wellas our ideals.

Experienced architects and interior designers knowthat light plays a vital part in determining the suc-cess of any project. Light, an immaterial element,is managed by us exactly as we manage any othermaterial. We work toward exalting light’s effectsand expressive potential. Management of expres-sive potential, in the case of light, entails controlof emission, based on needs, both functional andemotional, and control also of the quality andquantity of the light emitted by a lighting device,in such a manner that quality and effects can beadjusted at will. Adjustment entails fairly complexactions which can be managed through domoticdesign of the building’s system as a whole. It waswith this prospect in mind that Henge and Mas-simo Castagna devised their Emotional LightingControl System. E.L.C.S. is a special, exclusivetechnological solution based on specic electron-ic, computer science and lighting technique skillsenabling domotic management of each lightingdevice. The single multi-emission lighting deviceis electronically controlled according to various

scenarios, with fade-in and fade-out, managementby remote control device or smartphone, and im-plementations and updates downloadable fromthe Internet, for a modern, innovative approachto light management. The results are concretelyevident – increased performance ratings or yield, single action operations to simplify complex op-erations, limitation of settings and of applicationcosts, opportunities for maintaining efciency andfor updating operations for our products on an on-going basis… real values generated by technologywhich have emerged in other elds such as com -puter science and telephony. Now, with E.L.C.S.,these values enter the eld of decor and interiors.Henge has ‘changed the game’ by focussing notonly on the aesthetic and expressive aspects ofits products but also on their use value, on thequality of the light produced, and on the ‘designer-friendliness’ and ease of maintenance of Hengeproducts as a value in its own right.

168 ELCS TECHNOLOGY

Emotional Lighting Control System  is a unique, original, exclusive technology enabling domoticmanagement of individual lighting devices. It isa hi-tech electronic control system for individuallighting devices which enables simple, intuitivecontrol of the levels of emission of each sourceto create various lighting combinations for lightingscenarios that combine marked emotional impactwith high use value. When users press the roomswitch, as it turns on, the lamp calls up its lastconguration. By selecting the program from theremote control device or smartphone, users canselect the lighting scenario which is most appro-priate for their functional, emotional or personal

needs. Users can also quite simply adjust the in-tensity of light for each scenario while maintain-ing the characteristics of light distribution. As withturning on and off, each step occurs seamlesslywith the various light sources fading in and out asthey overlap. No special systems or domotic units are requiredfor E.L.C.S. A lighting outlet and normal switcheswill sufce. The electronic components are incor-porated into the lamp, providing control of thevarious light sources which interface with eachother. The interface is achieved via radio frequen-cies and via the remote control device with thesoftware which, on the basis of the settings storedon the rmware, will provide the various lightingsolutions. The app for smartphone use and rmware updatesshall be available for downloading from the HengeTechnology area of Henge’s web site. By connect-ing the remote control device to your computer (viathe USB port) you will be able to update lightingscenarios or, on request, obtain special custom-

ized congurations or functions dedicated to yourprojects. These actions can take place both beforeand after installation of the lighting device.

As a multi-source, multi emission (downward, up-ward, central emissions) lamp, Light Ring is par-ticularly suitable for E.L.C.S. technology applica-tion. E.L.C.S. will enable nine lighting scenariosfor a marked variety of effects, both emotionaland functional. It goes without saying that variousmixes of led light will determine a great variety ofeffects, including diffuse, mainly reected, lightscenarios, or scenarios with the light mainly di-rected downward (for dining or study), or markedlyemotional scenographic solutions regulated by avariety of recipes, with mainly horizontal lighting. The environment’s light changes, and so does ourperception of the suspended rings, whose colourswill vary according to the congurations enabled, creating lively, dynamic, emotional lighting effectswhich are truly unique and inimitable.

Although the approach adopted for Light Ring alsoapplies to the Tubular Light lamp, the resultingperception of light and of the interaction betweenlight and the environment is quite different. Itis, however, equally intense and emotional. Eachlighting tube is capable of emitting light upward ordownward. The light is always more concentratedthan we nd for Light Ring. The levels of distribu-tion vary according to the diameter of the tubesinstalled. Here too, the nine lighting scenarios vary amongthemselves. The scenarios were designed withthree typologies in mind: diffuse light, concen-trated light (dining and study), and emotionallight. The light is clear and intense and the ef-fect of difference, on looking upon the lamp, iseven more marked. The idea is to emphasise theplay between shade and light which underscores asense of intensity and drama, for remarkably strik-ing scenographic effects.
