Benefits CheckUp is an online questionnaire that asks you a series of questions and then creates a personalized report identifying programs that might be helpful to you. To access the Benefits CheckUp questionnaire, go to www.benefitscheckup.org.

Low Income Home Weatherization

The Housing Authority of Skagit County offers free weatherization assistance to qualified homeowners to help make their homes safer, healthier, more comfortable, less costly to heat and more energy efficient overall. Priority for service is currently being given to households at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. Households at the 200% level are placed on a waiting list. Call 757-6509, ext. 236. You will be contacted to schedule an appointment to determine your financial eligibility.

Tips to Save Energy

Here are some tips that can help you keep your energy costs down: Keep your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees.

Set it back to 60 at night and when you leave. Reduce drafts and air leaks by using rope caulk,

door sweeps, weather stripping, window plastic and storm windows.

Set your water heater to 120 degrees. Keep your fridge between 36 and 40 degrees, and

set your freezer between 0 and 5. Turn off lights when not in use. Wash laundry in cold water and select the right

water level for the load. Keep lint trap clean. Unplug unused appliances; they may still draw

energy when they are turned off.

Help Distribute

Newsletters The Center is in need of a volunteer to take over one of the distribution routes for the monthly newsletter starting in January. There are eight locations on this particular route. If you would like to help with this important task, please contact Sally Hill at the Center.

Grief Support

This group meets from 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday at Island Hospital. Grief doesn’t always have to mean the death of a loved one. It can come from the loss of a relationship, job or your health. As you deal with your loss, remember that there is no time table for grief. Everyone grieves differently, but there are healthy ways to cope and heal from the pain. Sharing your grief in a support group can be a first step toward that healing. For more information call (360) 202-1699 or email [email protected]. This group is facilitated by Lenore Peterson.

Salvation Army Food Bank

Needs Your Help The demand for food at the food bank has been increasing over the past ten years while the supply of low-cost food is dwindling. A new program called “A Simple Gesture” makes it easy to help fill the food bank pantry. Sign up by emailing [email protected]. Once you have signed up, follow these simple steps: Each week when you go grocery shopping,

buy extra non-perishable food items. Store them in the red bag provided by the

Salvation Army. On the second Saturday of every other month,

place your red bag outside your front door. A volunteer driver will pick up the bag, leave another bag in its place, and take the filled bag to the food pantry.

This program is also looking for volunteer drivers to help pick up the food bags. Spread the word to your neighbors. And thank you! Your simple gesture will make a difference.
