Helping Our Neighbours in Wrawby

With the news of lockdown looming due to Covid-19, the Facebook Group Helping Our neighbours in Wrawby was started on the 15th March. It was a way to let all our neighbours know that if they were self-isolating or shielding then a volunteer from their street would help them out by picking up some shopping, collecting a prescription or having a friendly chat on the phone. I was astounded by the number of volunteers and how quickly everyone rallied together (albeit apart) to deliver leaflets to every single household in the village.

As well as the shopping and phone calls we have been working alongside Well-being and Community Aid: North Lincolnshire and North Lincs Community Aid: Covid-19 to get donations for Brigg Foodbank, with The Old Chapel kindly taking in donations from Wrawby residents and delivering them to Brigg Foodbank.

The group has also been a great source for information sharing, bin collection reminders (very helpful when no-one knew what day it was), pharmacy hours changing and local businesses providing delivery/take away services.

It has been truly heart-warming to see our brilliant village come together to help each other out and to keep our spirits up. Seeing lots of households join in making window decorations of rainbows and teddies for children to spot on their walks, treasure hunts and pavement challenges, doorstep portraits and a fantastic “Stay at Home” Street Party to celebrate VE Day 75th Anniversary.

I would like to say a HUGE thankyou to every single volunteer for helping to put this together, for spreading the word and helping each other through the strangest of times.

I am so proud to call Wrawby my home.

Clare Drayton.

I’m sure that you would all like to join the Editors in passing on tremendous thanks to Clare and all the

volunteers for their ongoing work in helping other villagers. The Wrawby community spirit during these strange

times has been unbelievable!

Covid-19 Jokes Why do they call it the novel coronavirus? It’s a long story….

What’s the difference between COVID-19 and Romeo and Juliet? One’s the coronavirus and the other is a Verona crisis.

If there’s a baby boom nine months from now, what will happen in 2033? There will be a whole bunch of quaranteens.

Nail salons, hair salons, waxing centre and tanning places are closed. It’s about to get ugly out there.

With all this talk of Corona Virus, the people who make sanitising gel are rubbing their hands together.

My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately, now when I pee I clean the toilet.

They said that a mask and gloves were enough to go to the supermarket. They lied, everyone else has clothes on!

So many coronavirus jokes out there, it’s a pundemic.

Best Kept Village 2020 Result Congratulations to all in Wrawby in achieving third place in our category, large villages. The marking and general comments are detailed below.

General comments

Wrawby has many attractive features, with some good examples of community planting. At the entrance to the village on Brigg Road, there is smart village sign with a bench and two planters. This is replicated at the east entrance to the village where there are pots and a planter by the smart village sign. Further good community planting is found at Tunnel Road, Vicarage Avenue, Little Lane, Highfield Lane, Applefields, Vicarage Road where there are two planters, planting under the millstone and an information board. Residents also play their part in making this a pleasant village in which to live, through their efforts in tending to their gardens. There were particularly good examples of effective planting and colourful displays at the following properties: 2 Barton Road End, Stone Garth, Vale View and Hawthorne House on Barton Road, 17, 23, 28 and 30 Bakersfield, Ellan Vannin on Tunnel Road, 10 and 19 Markham Way, 39, 41 and 42 Vicarage Avenue, The Hawthornes on Vicarage Road, 1 Applefields, Coleridge on Brigg Road, Lilac House on Highfield Lane, Curzon, Cairnlea and Charlton on Melton Road and 3, 7 16, 17 and 19 Kettleby Lane. Special mention must also be made of the excellent displays of planting at Top Cottage and Millfield on Barton Road and the colourful planting outside the bungalows on Vicarage Avenue. The village also has a large playing field behind the good-sized village hall. On the west side of the field is a well-maintained playground. The parish church is also an attractive feature with a tidy and well-tended churchyard.

BE KIND TO HEDGEHOGS!

Here are a few gentle reminders about garden safety for hedgehogs. Unfortunately they are now on the red list of creatures vulnerable to extinction, but we can all help by observing a few simple measures such as:

• always checking bonfires before lighting them,

• checking before using lawnmowers and strimmer's (especially strimmer's!),

• avoiding using slug pellets and other poisons.

• A small gap in fences and hedges helps them move easily around gardens in their search for food.

If anyone is really interested there's a great deal of useful information on the website of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

For all your gardening, window–cleaning and DIY needs

Back to School September sees children starting pre-school, school, new schools and heading off to university. It is always a time when student’s may feel more anxious but may be more so this year, given how long it has been since some children were last in school and concerns over covid-19. We wish everyone well as the new term starts. Headteachers, teachers and other staff have all been working hard to ensure everything is in place to meet the new requirements to deal with the threat of coronavirus. As this edition is going to press there is much discussion about whether children over eleven should be required to wear facemasks and there will, no doubt, be changes to requirements as experience is gained of schools being open again. Good luck to all the students, staff, parents and guardians for the new academic year.

THINK LOCAL! August has seen the government subsidising eating out at the beginning of the week, to encourage people to return to having meals out. This scheme finished at the end of August but, hopefully, you have had an opportunity to benefit from this scheme. Many cafés, restaurants and pubs have struggled during lockdown.

They have had to look for novel ways to maintain their businesses, such as our village restaurant, The Millers Barn, providing a delicious take away and delivery service. Please try to support local businesses if you are thinking of going out for a meal. It is not only the local catering industry that has been struggling during lockdown. Other local businesses have also felt the impact of covid-19 so, if you are looking for a product or service, why not consider those who advertise in this newsletter. If you are still looking to maintain some level of isolation think about local businesses that may have started a delivery service, as well as big national companies.

Around Wrawby

The editors are happy to include details of villagers’ births, marriages and funerals that are held in venues other than Wrawby church. Please inform them using the details on page 2.

The funeral of Donald Hull (age 86) took place on the 1st April at the Crematorium. Donald died on the 15th March and a funeral had been planned in Church but was cancelled due to lockdown. Sadly his wife was unable to attend the commemoration. Our deepest sympathy goes to all the family and all others who may have been affected by similar events.

Thought for the Month

(This thought was originally published in 2014. Things have been very different for school children this year but many

of the reflections remain relevant.)

At the recent Leaver’s Service in St. Mary’s, when the school and the community gathered together in order to

celebrate the achievements of those children moving in from Primary to Secondary School, and to pray for them, I

was asked to give an address on the theme of the Journey of Life. I’d like to pick up on that theme here.

In the service, we reflected on those people who have accompanied us on our journeys so far; those who have taught

us, inspired and influenced us, shared their love and friendship with us – the people in our lives who have formed and

informed us as we grow. Inevitably, we needed to give some consideration to how, during the journey of life, we

experience change – new friendships are formed, new teachers educate us, and so forth. And so as well as looking

back we also looked forward to what the journey of life might have in store for each of us. There is also something in

all of this about how we ourselves accompany others and how we contribute to their journey through life.

When we think about journeys, we usually think about going from A to B; and the journey of life, in one sense, is the

same; we are each moving from birth to death. However, just as a journey from A to B can be complicated by many

things – a wrong turn, road works and diversions, the decision to detour and visit a friend on the way – so too is our

journey of life. There are many factors, often beyond our control, which can affect our journey through life. This may

include our own decisions and choices, the decisions of others, our education, skill and abilities, the job market and

the economic situation and so much more. So our journey is rarely straightforward; it’s more of a zig-zagging, to and

froing journey and life can have many ups and downs, twists and turns.

As an individual and as a corporate member of society and the Church, as a priest and a Vicar, I firmly believe that

the one Person who is there throughout each and every journey of life – the constant – is God. We change, our

friends and acquaintances sometimes change, where we live, what we do and our personal preferences, tastes and

priorities may change. But God is unchanging. His love for us remains constant, as does His desire for us to be in a

relationship with Him. He long’s to bring us to our homeland in His Kingdom. And like any relationship, our

relationship with God requires our effort, our response, and our love towards Him. I also believe, and my own

experiences bear this out, that when we try to block God out and make our journey without Him, life becomes far

more complicated that it needs to be. That is not to say that with God accompanying us we will never be hurt as we

make or journeys, or indeed hurt others, but with God, we share in His suffering as He shares in ours, as we do in any

relationship founded upon love.

Wherever you are on your journey of life – just setting off, or nearing the end, at a place of joy and happiness or one

of pain and sadness – may God be with you to guide and protect you. May He give you His comfort and His peace,

His light and His joy, in this world and the next.

With my love, prayers and every blessing,

Owain
