up or just show up. Another “Finish It” will be held in

October to work on Bonnie Hunter projects (or anything else

I hope you are all enjoying summer…escaping this oppressive

heat and enjoying some sewing time. We all enjoyed Jane Hamilton

at our June meeting. Jane shared many tips and tricks on labeling

our quilts. Pictures from her presentation can be found on

Facebook Helping Hands page.

A big thank you to Patricia Kokoszka for launching our member

directory on our website…check it out.

Quilter’s Lunch and Learn plans are in full swing…look for details

in a separate article. It proves to be a great day with fellow

quilters. Elaine Morris is looking for items to sell at HH boutique

baskets. Look for a separate article within this newsletter.

These items are great fund raisers for Helping Hands.

Raffle Quilt tickets are still available. If you haven’t picked up

yours, do so at this meeting. It’s a small way you can help our

Guild. Barb Austin will have signup sheets for upcoming events...a

fun way to meet people and enjoy time with your fellow quilters.

Our bookmarks have been distributed to all Delaware quilt

shops, with many positive comments. Pick up some business

cards at the back table at our meeting to share with people

you meet. Thank you to Marilyn Pegg who is scripting

monthly articles for local newspapers. These items let our

community know who Helping Hands Quilt Guild is and the

good work we do. Find out how you can help attain that goal.

I’d be happy chat with you.

At our July meeting we look forward to hearing from

Sue Pritt on machine appliqué. There will also be a

workshop on Tuesday. Please join Marti Chamberlain for our

pre-meeting at 5:45 pm on “Pressing Matters”…a discussion

about where to press the seam allowance and how to avoid

Talkin’ Turkey: Monday, September 26, 2016. $50 for members. Red strings combine with red and neutral scraps in this string

pieced rendition of the traditional Turkey Tracks block!

Update a traditional block with the freedom of string piecing.

Instruction includes the ins and outs of the Easy Angle and

Companion Angle rulers for easy half square triangles and

flying geese units from matched pairs of strips, and foundation

string piecing. Variety is the spice of the quilt!

Supply list:

http://quiltville.com/pdf/TalkinTurkeyClassSupply.pdf

My Blue Heaven: Tuesday, September 27, 2016 $50 for members. This is a two-block quilt! A modified puss in the corner block, and an

hour glass star block, both in 8" finished size. You can make this

quilt as big or small as you would like depending on the number of

blocks you make. This quilt uses 45 star blocks and 45 puss blocks.

The 90 blocks are set 9 across by 10 down. Of course you can make

the quilt smaller depending on the number of blocks you make

This quilt is perfect to learn how to use the specialty rulers I love

and use so much in my scrap quilting! This is an exceptionally good

class for beginning quilters, as we cover basic units like half square

triangles, flying geese and hour-glass.

Sue Pritt has a unique, artistic take on the world. Her

quilts make me long for the place in the appliqué quilt

scenes she creates. Whether at the shore, lake, or

mountains, you get a serene, contented feeling when you

see them. Her quilts featured in the Keepsake Quilting

catalog, at booths at quilt shows, and at shops. I

bought one of her patterns nearly 2 years ago. I am

sure this workshop will entice me to move it from my

UFO pile and work on it (even though I chose a

different one for the workshop.)

I am especially interested to learn how Sue

streamlines the top appliqué process to produce her

quilts in a speedy way. She has tips for making the

appliqué pieces, applying the appliqué, and quilting so

that projects may be finished more quickly than I

thought possible!

Sue’s husband just retired, so they will be camping at a

Delaware State Park south of here while visiting. She has a

busy workshop and retreat schedule for the rest of the

year. We are lucky to have enticed her to come to Dover!

Mark your calendar now for Saturday, October 22,

2016 at the Milford Senior Center. 9:00 am – 3:30 pm.

Tickets are $5 and will be available at our July 25 meeting

and August meeting (until tickets are sold out…only 65

available to HH). You may bring a guest.

Guest speaker for the day will be Janice Pope from North

Carolina...Check out her website:

http://anythingbutboring.com/.

There will be breakfast and lunch items for sale, vendors to

shop, bidding on mini quilts, demos and sharing of quilting

techniques, boutique tables from all three Guilds, Raffle Basket

drawings, Guild project show and tell, many door prizes, and a

free pattern for all attendees from the participating guilds. Questions can be directed to:

Sue Hoecker at [email protected],

Elaine Morris at [email protected], or

Rose Ann Battista at [email protected].

Thanks to some recent donations we have lots of fabric on

hand, and again, thanks to Fairfield Processing and another

donation, we have lots of batting...what a great combination!

We just need your time and willingness to help to whittle

down the piles and watch those quilts go out to people "who

need a little color in their lives...".

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any

questions about QFO or would like some work to do at home.

Quilting for Others will next meet on TUESDAY, AUGUST

9 at 6PM at the VFW Hall on Main St. in Camden.

We have a faithful crew of ladies who come regularly, and

we would love to have more ladies join us. We will have quite

a few quilts to pin that evening, so please come and pitch in!

QFO is a great way to get to know the guild members as well

as to know that you are doing something worthwhile for the

community with your sewing and quilting skills. To date this

year we have given out over 175 quilts, and we are going

strong!

Thanks to all of you ladies for your generous contributions of "chocolate" fat quarters last month! Do any of you have

any "mint" or "white" chocolate fat quarters that you might like to add to this basket? The Jack the Ripper basket could

use any duplicate marking or cutting tools or seam rippers or extra packets of blades or thread or rulers? Really,

anything you can think of that pertains to quilting would be appropriate...we all make mistakes while quilting, right? Even

some bright color fat quarters, since it is those seams we are ripping! I know your imaginations can come up with some

great ideas! Thank you so much for your help! The basket for donations will be on the Magic Table again at the July

meeting.

Thanks! RoseAnn Battista

Information about Programs and Events Please, see newsletters (linked on website) or website

for all workshop info. There is a calendar for the year

(under “EVENTS”) as well as “Workshops” organized by the

month.

At each guild meeting, please, take the time to watch

the scrolling announcements (with pictures) that is on the

front wall of the stage. You will learn about guild news,

workshops, upcoming speakers, etc.

There will also be brief reminders about meetings and

events through email a few days before our fourth Monday

guild meetings. WE WANT YOU TO BE INFORMED

ABOUT ALL OUR OPPORTUNITIES AND FUN!

Our Website Mary Dawn Ditty

We need a big favor. We need you all to click on this link for

our HH website to check us out. Then, it would be very, very

helpful for you to go to the site each day (or a few times a day)

for a while. What we are trying to do is have many visits to the

site so that Google will put the results up on the top of the list

when a potential new member looks for a “Quilt Guild, Dover,

DE.” Once we get many hits, it will work for us. We want to be

welcoming and let the community know we are here!

Patricia Kokoszka worked hard on this site and we really thank

her for this! This site will not be static, but will keep changing.

Our news and newsletters will be linked there as well so that if

you can’t find it in your email, you can go to our site,

http://www.helpinghandsquiltguild.com.

Thanks for the HELPING HANDS for your “clicking” our site to

rise it in the results!

So please, start cleaning out those quilting and sewing items you

have that are ripe for relocation NOW and bring them to the

upcoming guild meetings, then stay tuned for more details on the

guild’s Stash Relocation Event in November.

We do need help planning this fun guild fundraising event.

Anyone interested in participating on the auction organizing

committee, please contact Ellen Malenfant at

[email protected] or 302-492-8715. Please direct questions,

comments and suggestions to Ellen Malenfant or

Mary Dawn Ditty at [email protected] or 610-428-9579.

A friendly reminder to you all that this year’s guild auction, or

Stash Relocation Event, will be held at the November guild

meeting on November 28. You can bring in your donated items

for the auction at this month’s June meeting and in the coming

months before the auction. We’ll store your unwanted, unused

and unneeded sewing and quilting items until November for you

so you don’t have to!

At the Stash Relocation Event we plan to organize all the

donated items so that they can be viewed before the auction

and use different auction formats to sell (relocate) the items.

Details on that in the coming months.

The Next Raffle Quilt: We have a pattern and a plan! The pattern is similar to our current Raffle Quilt. The tickets for it are selling really well,

so why mess with success! But it is created by two different blocks and it will be in patriotic colors,

so it should have a different look.

THE PATTERN: See picture on right.

THE PLAN:

The plan is to collect reds, blues, and creams/whites from guild members over the summer months

and then the committee will get back together to make the blocks and the quilt top in the fall.

So, please bring any donations of fabric to the July or August meeting.

Fat quarters or yardage. Any fabric not used in the raffle quilt will be used in some other way

to benefit the guild.

Thanks, ML Kaczka and the Raffle Quilt Committee
