To sell online or to not sell online?

Yes! Interface for people to purchase products online

No! Online/web presence of products purchased

offline

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Just because you aren’t selling your products online through a website, doesn’t mean you cannot sell your products online. Simply having a website, with contact info should someone want to contact you by phone or email to purchase your product is one way to expand your customer reach. Additionally, to todays shopper of services and products, an online presence is an indication of credibility. Businesses without a website may be viewed as suspicious or untrustworthy.

Are you willing to pay someone to build and/or maintain a website?

Blog Site Example: Wordpress Website

This photographer uses a Wordpress website* to showcase her artwork. She posts photographs on the blog but also includes a narrative that tells the story behind the photos.*Photographer paid the nominal fee to remove the “wordpress” in the URL.

Notice the icons below the blog title on the right side. She’s got social media profiles with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and also a separate site that just showcases her portfolio.

Website Builder Options• Free Website Builders: Wix, Weebly, Jimdo, Webs.

• Squarespace offers 14 day free trial of their website builder. Go Daddy is not a free website builder, you must purchase a monthly plan (min. $5.99).

Here are the most commonly used website builders, and links to lots of information and comparison for each. However, to be able to appreciate the differences between your options for website builder, let’s talk about Weebly and Wix.

• Trade offs between Weebly and Wix:– Weebly is ideal for users who are novices with website building;

choices are limited but straightforward. Wix is ideal for the user who wants to have a lot of control to modify their website from the templates provided.

– Weebly allows the user to completely overhaul the look of their site with a few clicks, while with Wix the user has to completely rebuild their site in order to change the design.

– Wix provides more built-in user support while Weebly has a search page. Wix provides phone support while Weebly does not.

• Here’s an article that compares these two website builders in more detail http://www.websitebuilderexpert.com/wix-vs-weebly-which-website-builder-is-better/

Presentation Notes
Okay, let’s talk about the tradeoffs between the two website builders, Wix and Weebly.

Website Building and eCommerce

• Wix and Weebly are great choices for a website builder; if there is a possibility that you will also want to sell your product online, these sites can seamlessly add online store features.

• If you have a goal of selling your product through Facebook, online store sites Shopify, Bigcommerce, and Wix are great options for being able to import your storefront into Facebook. Learn more here: http://www.websitebuilderexpert.com/how-to-set-up-a-facebook-store/

Website Building and eCommerce, continued

• If you already have built a website and are adding eCommerce to your online presence, sites like Shopify, Squarespace, Bigcommerce, and Jimdo are great options to build online store capabilities into your existing site. Here is a great article that compares the different sites: http://www.websitebuilderexpert.com/e-commerce-online-store-builders-comparison-chart/

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We won’t be going into more detail in this presentation on how to build online store capabilities into your website. The link here can get you started, and it might be a good idea to work with a web designer with this kind of expertise if you are not feeling up to the task of taking on one of the sites listed on your own.

Third Party Sites

Presenter
Presentation Notes
There are several third party sites where you can sell you artwork/craft. Here are just a few! The more popular sites include Amazon, Ebay and Etsy. These sites receive a lot of traffic because many people know they exist. Let’s look a little more closely at how you might sell through these sites.
Page 18: Helping Artisans Reach Global Markets - CEDIK · If you just want an online presence, and do not have a lot of time to create or maintain a website, your best bet is to build \ൡ

Using Third Party Sites to Sell Product

• Pros of a third party site such as Etsy or Ebay:– Easy to set up your store front– Marketplace is established; a customer base is provided!

• Cons of a third party site:– Ebay and Etsy keep a percent of the sales you make on

your products, in addition to transaction fees.– Cannot make your storefront design look different than the

other merchants who use the site.

Examples of Etsy Storefronts

Presenter
Presentation Notes
A side-by-side of two Etsy storefronts illustrates the standard design of the storefronts – The two visual elements that DO stand out are the header graphic which displays the storefront’s name and the storefront description directly below, and the content that falls along the left side of the page (Shop Sections, Shop Info/Owner Info, etc.)
Page 20: Helping Artisans Reach Global Markets - CEDIK · If you just want an online presence, and do not have a lot of time to create or maintain a website, your best bet is to build \ൡ

Examples of Ebay Storefronts

Presenter
Presentation Notes
It is again easy to see how similar the Ebay storefronts look; however comparing these two seller’s storefronts, you can see how much nicer the one on the left looks, because they took the time to upload pictures, and complete a short bio.
