SUPPLEMENT 1 2014

Welcome to our first supplement of 2014. We’ve 43 new or returning holiday homes for you to choose from in our growing collection of special places to stay in the beautiful West Country.

As always, we’ve star rated and inspected them all and can wholeheartedly recommend them as great places for happy holidays. If you’d like more information about any of them, please call our telephone team, all experienced property visitors, on 01647 433593. They’ll be delighted to fill you in on those extra details you need to help guide you to the best holiday cottage for you.

Short breaksShort on time? Don’t forget, if you can’t get away for a full week between November and the week before Easter (excluding school holidays), you can book a three or four night break, whilst some properties offer a two night weekend booking (with 6pm check out on the last day). Two night breaks can only be booked within 28 days of departure.

Helpful Holidays’ charity for 2014This year, we’re working once again with The Marine Conservation Society, the UK charity dedicated to protecting our seas, shores and wildlife. Their work will help ensure healthy oceans for future generations. If you’d like to donate, please include a sum of your choice with your booking or visit www.justgiving.com/helpfulholidays where you can donate online.

What shall we do today?Once again, we’ve arranged lots of special offers and discounts for you at the West Country’s leading visitor attractions. We’ll send you a copy of our 2014 ‘What shall we do today?’ booklet with your booking confirmation. It’s full of valuable savings vouchers, advice on the best walks, beaches, places to eat, farmers’ markets, quirky events and lots more to help you plan and enjoy your holiday.

2014 poetry competitionBack by popular demand, our favourite competition and the chance to shine for all you budding poet laureates! Wax lyrical about your stay in the West Country in a poem and you can win a Helpful Holidays break worth £400. Entries need to be with us by the end of September 2014 for a chance of winning a holiday.

Keeping in touchApart from our regular monthly email newsletter, you can keep in touch with us via all the major social networks. Follow us on Twitter – just register at www.twitter.com/helpfulholidays to receive our tweets; or sign up as a friend on Facebook at www.facebook.com/helpfulholidays. Join Google+ or add your comments to our blog (www.holiday-cottages-in-the-west-country.blogspot.com). We’d love to hear from you.

We hope you enjoy this supplement and, wherever you go for your holidays this year, have a great time. Of course, we hope you’ll choose the glorious West Country and look forward to helping you if you do.

STAR RATINGS HOW TO BOOKWe have star rated all the properties in our brochures since we started in 1982 and have been pleased how enthusiastically you (our holidaymakers) have welcomed our efforts to quantify the ‘feel’ and ‘comfort’ of a holiday home. Our star ratings are unique in that they rely enormously heavily on the experience of the inspectors, members of our staff who have seen hundreds of houses. They check everything we think might be relevant to your enjoyment of your holiday, from basic cleanliness to whether the colour of the curtains goes with the duvet covers, and then they grade the property on the basis of all of these things. They remain, however, strictly personal assessments, in the best of faith, of interior quality and ambience only. They have nothing to do with the outward appearance or situation. Nor are they necessarily directly related to the quality or quantity of ‘gadgets’. Tick boxes ? ... well, some, yes, but mostly it’s about ambience, tone and comfort, all looked at with a good dollop of common sense.

Properties rated 5 star now would have been miles off the scale 10 years ago and, as standards continue to charge upwards, we constantly review to ensure that our star ratings remain useful. The greatest praise of them is, perhaps, the degree to which our customers of many years tell us they rely on our star ratings ABOVE ALL ELSE in their search for a perfect holiday place. The fact they have been appreciated by so many people for so many years makes us feel we are doing something right.

means what we would call ‘basic’, i.e. it has all the basic necessities but contains little or nothing that is new or smart. However, it may well have charm. A surprising number of people say ‘basic’ is what they want.

is better furnished and equipped: often very pleasant, quite attractive and friendly - just a little old fashioned. Or, alternatively, more functional than beautiful.

good quality and thoroughly efficient, a considerable and successful effort made to make it attractive; well-equipped; almost always fitted kitchens.

means better quality.

means excellent, ‘own home’ feeling, very good quality, attractive and well furnished and probably (though not necessarily - see individual descriptions) extremely well-equipped; or in some other way special.

means all that and more.

means exceptional.

More people say we malign places than that we over-rate them. We welcome your opinion; please let us know in your questionnaires. And please don’t forget and properties may be in marvellous situations.

Helping you find the perfect place for your holiday

Tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll do our very best to find you a place for your holiday which suits you perfectly. We regularly visit all the properties we let. When you ring, you’ll be able to speak to someone who has been to the property or properties in which you’re interested. They’ll use their experience and knowledge of those places to help you choose one which matches your hopes and expectations. They’ll steer you away from those they consider unsuitable and direct you towards those they can confidently recommend on the basis of what you tell them. Please use their local knowledge to help you make a well informed choice. We try to make booking a cottage through Helpful Holidays very easy.

HOW THE PRICE LIST WORKSRentals are per property from the dates specified; where ‘change-over days’ are other than Saturdays, the rental from the nearest Saturday applies. All prices are in pounds sterling and include VAT.

Single price bandsWhere there is a single blue box with a letter or letters in it at the end of the property’s description, find the appropriate letter code in the left-hand column of the price list (see right) and follow the row along until you reach the relevant date column. That is the rental, irrespective of whether the column is blue or white.

Dual price bands Where there are two boxes (one dark blue, one white) with letters in them at the end of the property’s description, the white box applies to the dates in the white columns in the price list - Spring Bank Holiday, High Season, Christmas and New Year. At all other times of the year the dark blue box applies.

Price bands with numbersWhere you see a box with a number following the price code letter, the rental quoted in the price list is for that number of people, or less. Each person in excess of the number is charged for, pro rata, at a per person rate. To calculate them, divide the rental by the number following the letter(s) in the box, multiply the result by the number of people in your party. If you need help, call us.
