You can help us make it the best year yet! If you are a business owner, consider becoming a hole sponsor for only $125, put together a team and play for $600 or consider donating a gift card or another item of value from your business. Contact our office if you are interested or if you know if someone that we should contact about a donation. Without this funding, we wouldn’t be able to provide the quality and quantity of programs that we do. That’s why we call it “a round of golf that does a world of good!”

JOIN THE 4-H FASHION LEADERSHIP BOARD The Kentucky 4-H Fashion Leadership Board is looking for a few good teenagers with a passion for style, clothing and fun.

The Fashion Board is open to individuals who will be in the ninth through 12th grades during the 2016-2017 school year. Applicants must be working on a 4-H project in a fashion-related area.

The young people selected will have the opportunity to improve their personal skills and gain awareness of the variety of available fashion industry-related careers. These young leaders will promote 4-H fashion projects within their home county and must participate in family and consumer sciences day at the Kentucky State Fair in August.

This past year was the second year for the board. Board members met throughout the year to learn about aspects of the fashion industry including design, color theory, product development, production, fabric identification and quality assessment. The group taught three workshops at 4-H Teen Summit about apparel and textiles.

They are also in charge of planning, scripting and leading educational sessions during the 4-H Fashion Revue, which is their capstone project in June. The revue gives young Kentuckians the opportunity to model their clothing creations.

New board members will be announced during 4-H Teen Conference in June, and their term will begin in July. Applications are due to the state 4-H office, May 1.

For an application, contact Kelly Smith, 4-H Agent at 502-569-2344.

SUPPORT 4-H WITH AG TAG DONATION

Source: Melissa Miller, interim executive director of Kentucky 4‐H Foundation

Farm vehicle license plate renewal is just around the corner. As you purchase or renew your tags this year, please consider making the $10 donation on each licensed vehicle to support 4‐H and help make the best young people better.

Since 2012, this voluntary donation has allowed Kentucky farmers to give back to their community to support agriculture education and awareness, youth leadership development and locally grown products. Funds raised from the donations are equally split between 4‐H, FFA and Kentucky Proud. 4‐H’s share at the end of the fiscal year in June 2015 was $180,119.05.

The funds 4‐H receives through the Ag Tag donation are split equally between the Kentucky 4‐H Foundation and the county from which the donation originated. Your local 4‐H council uses the money to fund programs and activities for young people in your community. The foundation uses the other half to fund statewide 4‐H programs. Regardless of whether the programs are local or statewide, they help Kentucky’s young people develop essential life skills they’ll need to become the leaders of tomorrow.

In 2015, Kentucky farmers in 80 counties increased their donations, with 18 of those counties reporting an increase of $1,000 or more. In addition, 23 counties had a 50 percent or higher increase in donation rate to tags sold and renewed over the previous fiscal year.

For more information about the program or how 4‐H is positively impacting youth in your community, please contact the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service.

KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAMS Source: Ms. Shawn M. Moore, Youth Program Director, 4‐H Youth Development, Kentucky State University As the 4‐H Youth Program Director in the College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Sustainable Systems at Kentucky State University, it is with excitement I share the amazing and educational summer programs we will offer for 2016.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by the year 2020 there will be 9.2 million jobs in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields—that’s up from 7.9 million in 2010.  Furthermore, studies have shown, the summer program settings play a valuable role in closing the opportunity gap facing many children and youth from underserved and underrepresented communities. So it is imperative youth have opportunities to assist with exposing and cultivating their minds towards careers in the STEM fields.

For over twenty years, Kentucky State University, through the Land Grant Programs, have been executing STEM based 4‐H and youth development programs for middle and high school students. The different program’s emphasis have been centered on such topics as: animal science, horticulture, aquaculture, and environmental science, to name a few, with the intent of influencing the minds of youth toward a career in an area of agricultural sciences.  There are currently three residential programs geared toward high school students and one geared toward middle school students, with all of them offering hands‐on experiential experiences and opportunities to advance their minds and extend their understanding of agriculture and other sciences.

Please find below the link to the website for where to obtain the application and information about the programs.
