TOURISM NEWSAntarctica is fascinating and awe-inspiring. It is the highest, coldest and most isolated continent in the world. The Antarctic and icy Southern Ocean impact upon the world’s climate and ocean currents and support unique wildlife that exists in a complex and sensitive system surviving at the extremes.South Africa has maintained an interest and pres-ence in Antarctica, and in 1959 became one of the original signatories to the Antarctic Treaty, which serves as the framework for all activities undertaken there.Cape Town, due to its location at the southern tip of Africa, is a gateway to Africa, the East and has been used as a launching point for sea explorations for centuries. On 25 September 2009 Cape Town, city of South Africa, signed a Statement of Intent to cooperate on issues such as research, educa-tion and tourism as one of the five Southern Rim Gateway Cities to the Antarctic. The other cities are:-Ushuaia, city of Argentina -Punta Arenas, city of Chile -Christchurch, city of New Zealand -Hobart, city of AustraliaThe signing of the Statement of Intent was facilitated by the South African National Antarctic Programme Unit (SANAP) of the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism (DEA&T).The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development and Tourism, Alderman Felicity Purchase signed the Statement of Intent, on behalf of the Mayor. For a personal account of her experience during the signing of the Statement of Intent view her presentation (PDF, 6.4mb).The signing of the Statement of Intent sees Cape Town positioned as a gateway to two continents and some of the more tangible benefits of this ar-rangement include:The construction of the new British base valued at R260m in Paarden Island. Cape Town becoming the gateway base for most European, as well as the Russian and Indian teams, all of which obtain supplies in Cape Town. An application from the Belgian Government sponsored International Polar Foundation to estab-lish a Polaris Institute in Cape Town. The institute is likely to be incorporated with the Convention Centre expansion. Expansion of Antarctic exhibits at both the Two Oceans Aquarium and the MTN Sciencentre. ECONOMIC BENEFITSThe international arrangement of Cape Town being an official gateway city to Antarctica is generat-ing substantial economic benefits for the mother city, and has the potential for exponential foreign investment. Cape Town’s proximity to Antarctica, sophis-ticated infrastructure, wealth of commercial, educational and industrial activities, large working harbour with one of the world’s largest dry docks

and high level of technical support, mean that the city has become increasingly popular as a service provider to vessels headed to Antarctica and back. The Port of Cape Town has 34 berths including large dry docks, six deep-sea berths, serviced by post-panamax gantry cranes, and a multi-purpose terminal to handle fruit, steel, maize, coal, and other cargo and dedicated cold storage. Which countries does Cape Town supply Antarc-tica related services to?South Africa’s polar research vessel, the SA Agulhas, ferries teams and supplies from Cape Town to its base in Antarctica (SANAE) and bases on Marion and Gough islands. In addition to this Cape Town currently services the following eight countries for their Antarctic and South Sea expedi-tions by supplying their maritime and aviation requirements: Russia, Germany , Britain , Belgium , India , Norway , Sweden , Finland What type of services does Cape Town supply?-Docking -Ship management -Shipping agents -Freight handling -Repairs and maintenance at our state-of-the-art ship repairing facilities -Warehousing -Logistical services to Antarctica and Southern Ocean -Catering for Antarctic-bound research teams and tourists

-Rescue operations and medical assistance -Waste handling -Aircraft services -Conferences about climate change and related topics -Hotel and hospitality services What are some examples of revenue / potential revenue generated by Antarctic-related services?Polar vessels generally spend in excess of R7.5 million per annum on repairs to machinery coming

back from Antarctica Spend on bunker fuel alone (that the ships use to operate – not that is used to re-stock the bases), is in the region of R2.5m for the SA Agulhas, R7m for the Polar Stern and R14m for the Aka-demicFederovThe new British Antarctic Base was built mainly in Cape Town, at a cost of R260 million The Wesgro report shows the import profile of the French South Antarctic Islands and highlights the opportunities for Cape Town as a supplying market for goods to Antarctica, whether to supply research expeditions or to refill the supplies to cruise ships en route. THE FUTURE OF THE FISHING INDUSTRYThe fishing industry is highly dependent upon the upwelling of cold Antarctic currents and the fish stocks they support, and the economic revenue they generate as a result. The fishing industry is just one of the reasons why it is crucial that Antarctica and the life it supports be conserved not only for Cape Town and South Africa, but for the entire world.Rosé. The judging panel included 2 revered inter-national judges - Nicolas Follet of Oenosense Con-sulting (Riems, France) and Hervé Dantan (chef de cave of Champagne Mailly Grand Cru). The Best Overall award went to Bon Courage Jacques Bruére Blanc de Blancs 2007, based in the Robertson wine valley. What is interesting to note is the varietal started out as an experiment by

winemaker Jacques Bruwer on the fam-ily’s property in the early nineties - and is now a flagship wine for the Bon Courage label. Bruwer attri-butes the success to a number of factors, including the stone-based chalky soils in the Robertson wine region, the fact that the vines are between 16 and 22 years old and that the grapes spent 36 months on the lees. Bon Cour-age last won the Cap Classique Challenge in 2004 with the

Jacques Bruére Brut Reserve 2000.In the additional categories, the Best Vintage went to Kumkani Infiniti Brut 2004, the Best Rosé went to Pongracz Rosé and Pongracz (Classic) walked off with the award for Best Non-Vintage.There’s no doubt that South Africa’s bubblies deserve their place in the sun. Although we might not be allowed to call our wines ‘Champagne’ or ‘Champenoise’, our Cap Classique varietals can hold their own in the global arena.Author: South Africa Tourism

THE TAMING OF THE SHREWThe Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, lights up the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre summer season.

Christopher Sly, a congenial drunk flung out of a bar by the pub’s Hostess, falls into a deep sleep and dreams a dream. That dream is the story of the taming of Katherine, the Shrew, by Petruchio. This play-within-a-dream, with its wild and giddy uses of disguises, mistaken identities, and confusions provides consummate comedy for all. Circus owner Petruchio drags Katherine into a mad, topsy-turvy world of clowns, jugglers, tumblers, a lion and Petruchio’s spaniel, Troilus. Through this comic, and at times brutal chaos, two of Shakespeare’s most celebrated lovers encounter a rugged path to true love.An Italian Circus is coming to Maynardville! FASCINATING AIDANearly 28 years ago, in a North London attic, three beautiful sopranos dreamed of fame, stardom and the bright lights of the Opera House in Milan.

At the same time, in a rather grubby sitting room in British West Hampstead, an out-of-work actress called Dillie Keane was suffer-ing from a hangover and trying to persuade a couple of chums to sing with her at the local wine bar. She succeeded, and Fascinating Aida was born.

So how can you describe Fascinating Aïda? Noel Coward meets Ab Fab, as sung by the Andrews Sisters but a great deal ruder than any of these. It’s an exhilarating mix of extremely biting satire, broken dreams, utter class and gratuitous smut. Constantly updated songs, brilliant lyrics and heavenly harmonies. And some moments that will make your mother blush.Their achievements can be numbered: 8 West End runs, 7 albums, performances in 5 continents, 3 Olivier nominations, 2 books, 2 farewell tours, 2 altos, 3 New York Drama Desk nominations, 1 Perrier nomination, and a YouTube phenomenon. Now they are fulfilling a long- held deep desire to come to South Africa. Some come along and thrill as the three of them create their own special magic for you.

Laugh as the girls defy time, gravity and their zippers to waft you on song through the hell that is modern life. There ain’t anyone else like ‘em.

Incidentally, no-one ever heard of the three beauti-ful Hampstead sopranos again. Theatre On The Bay, 15 Feb- 05 Mar, Tickets R100-R250 From Computicket: 083 915 8000

Nearly 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions result from transport. It would be unre-alistic to expect people not to travel, but there are real ways that you can travel more efficiently! With petrol and air travel costs skyrocketing (pardon the pun), now is a good time to change the way you travel, saving the planet and your pocket at the same time!

DRIVING• Drive less. • Choose a fuel efficient car.• Check your tire pressure - incorrect tire pressure results in higher petrol/diesel usage. • Drive smoothly - your car burns the most fuel when you are accelerating. Avoid sharp braking and accelerating to save petrol. • Car pool the kids - why have four parents stuck in traffic. Do lifts for other parents and vice versa.

FLYINGGreenhouse gases which are released at high altitudes have an even greater impact on climate change. • Avoid unnecessary flying - urge your business to invest in tele- and video-conferencing facilities.• Fly direct - most of the fuel used when flying is

KEEPING IT CLOSEDAvoid opening the fridge, the freezer or the oven unnecessarily. For each minute a fridge door is open, it takes three energy guzzling minutes for it to cool down again. It can take a freezer as long as thirty minutes to regain its temperature if the door is open for just one minute. Every time you open the oven while cooking, you lose heat, making the meal take longer and use more energy.

A BRIGHTER IDEAIf one million people replaced one incandescent bulb with a Compact Fluorescent light bulb (CFL), more than 200 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions would be eliminated in a year. CFL light bulbs last ten times longer than traditional bulbs and use a frac-tion of the energy.

DON’T OVERCHARGETurn off appliances at the wall. Cellular phone chargers, shavers and electric toothbrushes all continue to draw electricity even when they are

fully charged. A television left in standby mode uses nearly a quarter of the electricity it uses when it is on.

WARMING THE OL’ GEYSERGeysers can consume as much as 40% of a house-hold’s energy. Set the thermostat to no more than 60 degrees and fit a geyser blanket (available at hardware stores) to reduce lost heat.

DON’T POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT OR YOURSELFClean your home and yourself with products that are good to the environment and to you. Enchantrix stocks a range of organic, biodegradable clean-ing products and toiletries and a portion of their profits is donated to WWF. Buy online with a clear conscience at www.enchantrix.co.za.

CAR POOL THE KIDSSharing lifts with other parents is a great way to reduce traffic, emissions and save on petrol.

CONSUMER SPECIES LIST

This list tells you about which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices. The species included on the list have been assessed by consider-ing the stock status, the environmental effects of fishing and the management in place to reduce these effects or maintain the stock at healthy levels.

Note that some fishing and farming methods pose less harm to the environment than others. For instance, line or pole caught methods are relatively selective and don’t kill unintended species such as albatrosses. Although some forms of seafood farming can reduce pressure on over-exploited wild stocks this is only the case if wild fish don’t need to be fed to the farmed fish or if the production method doesn’t further degrade the environment.

gREEN - BEST CHOICE

ORaNgE - THINK TWICE

The most sustainable choices from the healthiest and most well managed populations. These species can handle current fishing pressure.

Exercise caution when choosing these as there are reasons for concern, either because the species is depleted as a result of overfishing and cannot sustain current fishing pressure, or the fishery that catches them may cause particularly severe environmental damage and/or has high bycatch, or the life-style (biology) of the species makes it vulnerable to high fishing pressure.

REd - DON’T BUY

Don’t buy these species because they are either from unsustainable populations, which are collapsed and/or have extreme environmental concerns and/or lack appropriate management, or are illegal to buy or sell in South Africa (No sale species). Dealing in illegal species will result in prosecution. No sale species are reserved for recreational fishers, who need a valid fishing permit, may not sell their catch and must adhere to specific regulations.

THE OLD CITY HALLBuilt in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colo-nial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on London’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town.

The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Mag-nificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass win-dows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.

KAYAKING

One of the most unique places in the world - a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. We leave from Simon’s Town Waterfront and paddle past the civil-ian and Naval Harbour and out to Boulder’s Beach. After visiting the penguins we stop on a lovely semi-private beach for refreshments, swimming and snorkelling (we provide the snorkels and bottled drinking water.) Our double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience. By far our most popular trip. During the whale season from August to October there is a good chance of seeing whales as well. Read an article about seeing whales when paddling here.
