INFECTING THE CITY PUBLIC ARTS FESTIVAL

9-14 MarchTHROUGHOUT CAPE TOWN CITY CENTER

There are several key things to know about the Festival:- Routes On and Off - There are daytime and evening performances, and much of the Festival is designed as routes. This year, some of the routes are planned around hubs of activity - central spaces that are activated for the whole day with various installations, participatory artworks and performances. Beyond the scheduled performances, there are artworks that run throughout the Festival, as well as artworks that are mobile, without time or place, and that can only be experienced if stumbled upon.- Performance Times - The Programme indicates the locations and order in which works will be presented on the respective routes, as well as the timeframes for these presentations. They have to use timeframes, as moving audiences

4 l Hello Cape Town March 2015

Page 5: Hello Cape Town March 2015

from artwork to artwork along a route makes it impossible to publish exact starting and ending times for each performance.- Festival Information - This year, they will have two Festival Information Centres on St George’s Mall, between Wale and Waterkant Street. These will offer detailed Programme and Festival information. Consult www.infectingthecity.com for regular updates.- Dinner Time - The evening Programmes have been structured to include a dinner break, where audiences will be treated to a broad range of food and drink delicacies thanks to the creativity of one the key donors, Spier wine estate. Come hungry and thirsty, as this isn’t to be missed. - Youth Development - In previous versions of Infecting The City, youth attended workshops and were brought in largely as spectators. This year, they actively participate in the Programme throughout the week as well. - Public Art Symposium - The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) will host Remaking Place from 8-14 March 2015. Members of the public are welcome, and admission is free.

Full programme is available on infectingthecity.com/2015 and on Hello Cape Town Magazine Facebook page under event section.

revered artists of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was not rated very highly at all. His ‘rediscovery’ had to wait until the mid-19th century. Today he is possibly the most sought-after and celebrated ‘Old Master’ of all.

Although South African public collections have no paintings attributable to Rembrandt, there are some fine collections of his etchings. This exhibition draws on the major institutional collections within South Africa, including the Michaelis Collection (Cape Town), the Iziko SA National Gallery (Cape Town), the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (Port Elizabeth), the Rupert Art Foundation, the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation (Stellenbosch) and UCT. The impressive collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, presented by Howard Pim, has previously never been shown in Cape Town before.

KEY INFORMATION FOR PROPERTY ACQUISITION AS A NON-RESIDENTInformation courtesy of STBB - SMITHTABATA BUCHANAN BOYES

South Africa’s well established legal framework offers first world security of title to foreign buyers of immovable property. There are no restrictions on the ownership by non-residents of property situated in South Africa, except of course that, foreigners who are in the country illegally may not own property here. There are, however, procedures and requirements which must be complied with and the next few paragraphs will provide answers to some frequently asked questions that foreign buyers of South African property may have.

CAN FOREIGN FUNDS BE BROUGHT INTO SOUTH AFRICA TO BUY PROPERTY?Yes, foreign funds can be paid into any bank account in South Africa. Usually the foreign purchaser will pay the purchase price for the property bought into the trust account of the estate agent that brokered the sale or into the trust account of the conveyancing attorney who attends to the registration of the transaction. Both estate agents and attorneys are covered by Fidelity Funds, which guard against theft or negligence on the side of the agent or attorney.

When a non-resident transfers funds from a foreign source into a South African bank account, a record known as a ‘Deal Receipt’ is issued by the South African bank. This is an important document and the non-resident will need to submit it to the Reserve Bank when, in future, he sells the property and wishes to return the funds to the foreign country.

CAN MONEY BE BORROWED INSOUTH AFRICA TO BUY PROPERTY?Non-residents purchasing a property in South Africa may borrow up to a maximum of 50% of the purchase price from a South African financial institution.

The remaining 50% of the purchase price will therefore need to be made up offoreign funds that the non-resident transfers to a South African account.

The total loan amount granted by a bank however remains within the bank’s discretion. A bank will generally require proof of the non-resident’s income as well as compliance with South African anti-‘money laundering’ legislation (the Financial Intelligence Centre Act), which involves the furnishing of proper identification and the submitting of certified copies of documents (such as a passport and proof of residential address).

CAN A FOREIGN COMPANYBE THE PURCHASER (OR SELLER)?Yes, a foreign company can buy and own land in South Africa. In certaininstances, this would require that the purchasing register itself as an entity in South Africa and, if the shares are owned

by the non-resident, the company must in addition appoint a public officer who is a South African resident.

MUST A PURCHASER BE PRESENT INSOUTH AFRICA TO SIGN THEDOCUMENTS OF THE TRANSFER?Fortunately a purchaser need not necessarily be personally present in South Africa to sign the documents that are required for the registration of transfer of ownership in the property. However, there are formalities that must be complied with in such a case, requiring that the docu-ments must be signed either before a Notary Public or at the South African Embassy in the foreign country. Both these options are unfortunately usually costly and time consuming. It is often to the non-resident’s best advantage, whether he is selling or buying, to execute a Special Power of Attorney prior to departing from South Africa in favour of a local friend, family member, or attorney so that this person can act and sign documentation on his behalf. It is important to remember that an affidavit cannot be signed by the person holding the Power of Attorney on your behalf. For this reason there will invariably still be some documents for such client to sign abroad.

WHEN A NON-RESIDENT SELLS A PROPERTY, CAN THE MONEY BE TAKEN OUT OFSOUTH AFRICA?Yes, money that was introduced to South Africa from a foreign source and any profit thereon, can be taken out of the country (repatriated) when the non-resident sells the property. Any sums still owing under a mortgage bond over the property must be paid as the sale transaction is registered so that only the net proceeds will be repatriated.

Note that such repatriation of funds is subject to South African Exchange Control Regulations which means, amongst other things, that the Reserve Bank will investigate the initial source of the non-resident’s investment in South Africa.

Furthermore, if a foreigner takes up permanent residency in South Africa and signs a Declaration and Undertaking at a South African bank (namely declaring whether they are in possession of foreign funds and undertaking not to place same at the disposal of anyone resident in the Republic), they will be considered a resident for Exchange Control purposes and accordingly will only be able to freely repatriate funds within five years of their immigration. Thereafter they will be considered to be a South African resident and subject to the same regulations and limitations. Finally, the repatriation of funds will be subject to capital gains tax, which we discuss in the next paragraph.

DOES A NON-RESIDENT HAVE TO PAYINCOME TAX?Income Tax- Whilst South Africans are taxed on their worldwide income, non-residents are liable for income tax only on income accruing from a South African source and may then utilize the

double tax treaty benefit (if applicable) to avoid double taxation. For example, if a non-resident rents his property out, he will be obliged to declare such rental for primary taxation in his country of residence but will still be obliged to declare such income in South Africa as well. Thus, non-residents are also obliged to register for income tax purposes in South Africa.

Capital Gains Tax (CGT)- The non-resident is liable for payment of tax on the gain made on selling the property (capital gains tax).

Withholding Tax- Because some foreign buyers in the past avoided paying CGT when they sold their property, new legislation was passed which obliges any buyer of a property sold by a non-resident for R2 million or more, to retain a percent-age of the purchase price and pay it to the South African Revenue Services within a maximum of 28 days of the transfer.

WHAT THE EFF?

It’s hard to live in South Africa for more than five minutes without looking around in wide-eyed bewilderment, and asking: “What the EFF?”.

Whether it’s hippies rubbing their chords together to produce solar energy, militants marching into parliament in Pep Store overalls and Italian shoes, or taxi drivers who manage to simultaneously cut you off and flip you the bird while paging through the newspaper and counting their money… at some point in every day, you will say: “What the EFF?”.

Fortunately, Nik Rabinowitz is here to answer that question. Or maybe not answer it, so much as shake it a bit, and see what falls out. From the leafy green ganglands of Constantia to the imaginary book-storage lockers of Limpopo, Rabinowitz casts his eye far and wide, and muses: “What the EFF?” And if politics isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of other ridiculousness that’ll have you shaking your head, and clutching your sides.

ALAN COMMITTIE IN THE SOUND OF LAUGHTER

Alan Committie is (still) alive with…THE SOUND OF LAUGHTER, his BRAND NEW Festive season stand-up show that premieres this December. As a 40-year-old comedian with slightly greying hair, Committie is trying to be a little more serious about his comedy. Which essentially means new material but the same suit.

Covering everything from - Selfies to Christmas Elfies. Banting whilst bunting. The final say on the Pistorius trial. A beautifully nuanced recreation of The Sound of Music – in 8 minutes. A powerful if ineffective examination of War Horse and why it cannot solve the Middle East Crisis. Special appearances by Johan van der Walt and demotivational speaker, Trevor Tahor.

This promises to be an evening you don’t want to miss. Unless you do, in which case, you come to another night. Don’t be silly.

The challenge of having 15 numbered boxes on the stage and remaining calm enough to throw myself at the mercy of the choices of every night’s audience is a bit crazy. There is usually no democracy on my stage. There I am the Vladimir Putin of theatre. I know what I do; where I do it; how I do it, and when I do it. So that starting in a suit will easily and smoothly end the show in a dress. But now I am at the mercy of a lottery!”Theatre on The Bay, until 14 March, Tickets R95 - R165 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

COMFORT YE

It’s six o’clock in the morning. A boy kisses a girl, then runs away. The police arrive... “Comfort Ye” is an engrossing new work of music theatre in which young people from a community near Cape Town tell their own stories. Music by Handel, Milliken, and the young people themselves combine to make a moving and uplifting score about contemporary issues. German artists meet South African professionals, specialist baroque performers meet jazz musicians, young singers join forces with established professionals for this world premiere performance. Umculo is an international music organisation that supports lasting social change through music in South Africa.

CABARET

“There was a Cabaret, and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany. It was the end of the world ... and I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep ...”

From the creators and producers of the Fugard Theatre’s smash hit musical The Rocky Horror Show comes one of Broadway’s greatest musical productions – Cabaret.

The Fugard Theatre looks forward to welcoming you to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and the raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalise the crowd and to entice them to leave their troubles outside. But as the life of pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through the dangerous times and help them to navigate through the rise of the loathsome ideology of Nazism?

That’s how theatre works. You knew that. Plus, if you book now, we will throw in an interval somewhere in the middle of the show for free. Except for the drinks and snacks.

BLUE/ORANGE

A young black man, Christopher, displays signs of borderline schizophrenia when he claims to be the illegitimate son of Idi Amin, while insisting that oranges are blue. Despite this, Christopher is excited because his month of observation in a psychiatric unit is up and he should be going home. But his young psychiatrist (Bruce) and his mentor and supervisor (Robert) can’t agree on his diagnosis and whether sending him home is advisable. Christopher becomes the ball in a deadly match of power between the two white men.

Andrew Buckland returns to the Baxter as the domineering Robert, Nicholas Pauling plays the keen young Bruce, and Marty Kintu plays Christopher.

AN AUDIENCE WITH PIETER-DIRK EISH

AN AUDIENCE WITH PIETER-DIRK EISH“My new 2015 look at South Africa and the world around us – AN AUDIENCE WITH PIETER-DIRK EISH! – is developing into an unexpected national assembly of my satirical cluster of characters, some who have been with me since the 1980s. While it has always been my aim to remind us where we come from, it is more of a necessity now to celebrate where we are going.

Does history repeat itself and turn tragedy into farce? Maybe on some minor levels of stupidity – thinking of the famed Gupta Wedding Fiasco and the Nkandla Firepool Gala. But looking at the characters and stories I have lined up, some old, so new, some borrowed, some blue, I don’t believe that history repeats itself in South Africa. Here it just rhymes: from apartheid to tripartite; from Amandla to Nkandla!

PYTHONESQUE

Through brilliant pastiches of the indelibly remembered sketches, Smiles tells the story of the Pythons and along the way, delivers some wry and very funny commentary on the world we live in.

Remember The Dead Parrot, The Lumberjack Song, Nudge-Nudge Wink-Wink, The Spanish Inquisition, The Cheese Shop and The Ministry of Silly Walks? And of course, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life? Good! Because we remember them too. The Pythons became so influential in their style of satire and comedy that they became an adjective in the dictionary – Pythonesque – hence the title of the play. They even have a long-running musical on Broadway, “Spamalot”.

For fans, this is going to be a real treat. For the uninitiated, get booking because there is nothing wilder, insaner, hilariouser, ruder, sillier and more inspired than the uncompromisingly funny world of Monty Python!

The actors will be paid in spam. We would prefer you to pay in Rands. Pounds and Yen are fine too.

WE’VE BEEN TO

Attaining this historic milestone has secured Kirstenbosch’s status as one of the most important tourist attractions in South Africa, said Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, who visited the garden with global leaders in tourism today.

The Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO), Mr TalebRifai, and the President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Mr David Scowsill, joined Minister Hanekom and Western Cape MEC for Tourism, Mr Alan Winde, on a tour of the garden today.

“The milestone achieved by Kirstenbosch is a tribute to the hard work and vision of the South African National Biodiversity Institute,” said Minister Hanekom. He said South Africa’s botanical gardens provided a window on South Africa’s rich natural heritage, exposing visitors to the country’s biodiversity.

SANBI CEO, Dr Tanya Abrahamse, said the opening last year of the Tree Canopy Walkway, or “Boomslang” as it is known, had led to a surge in visitors, resulting in achieving the one million milestone for the first time in the garden’s 102-year history. “The Tree Canopy Walkway has become a prime attraction as one of our legacy projects,” said Dr Abrahamse. “Kirstenbosch is well-known as a ‘must see’ destination when planning a trip to South Africa, so when international tourism experts visit the country it’s no surprise that they would like to visit this iconic spot.”

SANBI celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, and next year will mark the 40th year of Kirstenbosch exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. “This is a true reflection of SANBI’s commitment to conserving the country’s unique biodiversity,” said Dr Abrahamse.

South Africa is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world and is home to nearly 10% of the world’s plant species, 7% of the reptile, bird and mammal species and 15% of known coastal marine species. SANBI protects, promotes and conserves the country’s national heritage through a variety of programmes. “Our educational and job creation projects offer many solutions to the challenges that we face, and is key to conserving our planet,” said Dr Abrahamse.

KIRSTENBOSCH ATTRACTS OVER ONE MILLION VISITORS

The idea of a Tree Canopy Walkway in the Kirstenbosch Arboretum originated about 6 or 7 years ago as a concept to attract visitors to a part of the garden which very few people knew about or visited. In 2013 when the garden celebrated its Centenary the concept of a tree canopy walkway became an obvious choice as a legacy project.

The appointment of the right Architect, Mark Thomas, and Structural Engineer, Henry Fagan, were critical to the success of project. Designing a structure that would blend into the forest in an unobtrusive manner and be virtually invisible from most parts of the garden was critical. Installing a large steel & timber structure in the middle of a very sensitive forested area was also extremely challenging.

The success of the designs aesthetic and artistic value has led to the structure being featured in numerous international and local Architectural magazines and it has been nominated as the “Most Beautiful Object in South Africa” (MBOISA) for 2015 by the CEO of the African Arts Institute.

The design is based on the inverted skeleton of a snake, winding its way through the tree canopy and as a result it became affectionately known as the “Boomslang”. It was opened to the public in May 2014 and the Walkway very quickly went “viral” on social media.

Kirstenbosch was soon swamped by a deluge of visitors all desperately looking for the “Boomslang”. By the end of the 2014 calendar year attendance had increased by 27,5% on the previous year with attendance exceeded 1 000 000 for the first time in the Gardens 101 year history.

Income from gate takings has increased by 48% from R16,9m in 2013 to R25,0m in 2014. The increased gate income has meant that the capital cost of construction of R5m has been recovered in just eight months since the Walkway was opened.

Art in the Yard gallery presents ‘HUNGRY MONEY DEPLETING LIFE

- A Mixed Media Exhibition by Varenka Pascke

Through the eyes of the next generation the artist explores the follies of adult existence. The works depict scenarios of human behaviour to overcome the stresses of the modern world, we see warning signs to our over exaggerated caution, mindlessness, lack of tenacity and empathy to all that surrounds us.

This passionate commentary on today’s naive society is captured in truly beautiful aesthetics. Varenka produces powerful, straightforward

depictions in her signature use of an unsuspecting mix of mediums. Varenka will be showcasing two dimensional works, oil on fabric on board and to heighten the experience she has completed sculptures to accompany the paintings made from tactile hand carved wood and intense ceramic shapes

The opening is Saturday 7th March 2015 from 11am – 2pm at Art in The Yard. Address :The Yard, 38 Huguenot Street, Franschhoek 021 876 4280. [email protected] Art in the yard opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9am – 6pm, Sunday & Public holidays 9.30am – 5.30pm.Closes 31st March 2015

GOES ELEMENTAL(Cape Town, 12 February 2015) A dazzling parade of floats, hip-shaking dancers and foot-stomping bands, will storm the Green Point Fan Walk on Saturday, 14 March from 19h00 for the sixth annual Cape Town Carnival.

47 Community performance groups will interpret the ELEMENTAL theme of Fire, Water, Air and Earth – ‘the unstoppable forces that shape us and our environment.’

Participants and spectators are invited to embrace the 2015 theme and dress for the occasion. Shelley Finch, Cape Town Carnival’s Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Director says: “We encourage all of Cape Town to share in this spectacular night with us. Shine bright, dive into the sea, soar into the skies and float back down to earth while celebrating the Cape Town Carnival 2015.”

Fans may remember the first Cape Town Carnival which was held in Long Street in 2010, when close to 11 000 people marked the occasion, together with the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup. Since then, the crowds have swelled to over 50 000, with the parade now taking place along the Green Point Fan Walk.

An explosion of fireworks at 19h00 will mark the start of the procession, which will wind along the 1.2km Fan Walk. Energized performers will strut their stuff in front of mesmerized crowds, showing off more than 20 floats, puppets and contraptions which are larger and more extravagant than before.

On event day, the audience is encouraged to join in the street festivities anytime from 16h00, when it will turn into a pedestrian walkway complete with food vendors, stalls and festive hospitality areas. Finch explains, “This is a great opportunity to introduce children to the diversity of our magical city and get them in the mood for the evening’s festivities with goodie-bag giveaways, face painting, acrobats and buskers.”

The Cape Town Carnival After Party brought to you by Redd’s will allow partygoers to rock to some of SA’s hottest musical talent on the Green Point Stadium Forecourt from 21h00 until midnight. Entry is free (for over 18-year olds only) and one lucky person in the party crowd will win a car through the Redd’s After Party competition.

Getting to the Cape Town Carnival with public transport will be easy as additional MyCiti and Park & Ride facilities will be in operation. Metrorail will also offer a selection of late night trains for commuters. Restaurants and cafés all along the route will be open and there will be seating stands along the Fan Walk for those wanting to be within inches of the performers. Finch adds, “It’s a safe and wonderful fun-filled extravaganza, and a perfect place to meet friends and bring the family. Make Cape Town Carnival an annual tradition!”

This blue mystical gem has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is thought that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood and release them from poor habits or addictions. It is also believed, that tanzanite is able to restore spiritual balance and good fortune. The Treetop Canopy Walkway

In celebration of its Centenary (1913- 2013), Kirstenbosch botanical gardens chose to add this spectacular project that would be a unique and permanent feature to the venue.

This special walkway is a perfect means to mark the occasion. It was built purely from bequest money which has been left to Kirstenbosch by numerous donors, but predominantly Mary Mullins. It is also a fantastic opportunity to take people into the treetops, a place with a distinctive ecology that is generally inaccessible. From here people can experience the forest from high above the ground and also see birds and other animals that are generally elusive. One can experience an entirely new world of tree dynamics - how the treetops move in the wind and how the crowns of the trees interact with one another. The walkway then bursts through and above the canopy, giving you an impression of what it is like to be above the forest. At this point, the walkway provides spectacular 360 degree vistas comprising of Cape Town and the surrounding majestic mountain slopes. Adding to the exceptionality of this modern feature is the fact that the walkway is fully wheelchair accessible.

The design of the walkway is envisaged as a sinuous, lightweight, non-intrusive steel structure, which supports a slatted timber deck, and snakes its way into, through and over the ever-changing tree canopy. The structure, comprising ribs and a structural spine, inspired by a snake’s, is supported on slender steel columns intertwined with creepers. On site, the pieces were bolted together and mounted on top of long columns much like a giant mechanic set.

The walkway takes advantage of the sloping ground and starts and ends within the arboretum, so there is almost no visual impact from the lawns and walks in the garden. There are no mechanical or electrical aspects to the walk and the gentle gradients will easily raise visitors to over 11 meters above ground and is about a 130 meters long.

There is no extra charge for this added feature. A normal garden entry ticket is all that is required.

Opening/Closing times of the garden: September to March 08h00am -19h00pm, and from April to August 08:00-18:00 every day.

CAPE FUR SEAL

Situated only 8 nautical miles (about 16km) from Simon’s Town, Seal Island is home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting.

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations. The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born.

The majority of the seals on Duiker Island, out of Hout Bay Harbour, are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber.

BIG 5 SAFARI

The phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The col-lection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.

African Big Five Game Species:African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana): The African elephant is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears.

There are two distinct species of African

ELEPHANT RIDES

Join the southern-most elephants in the world atKnysna Elephant Park. Where a resident family of African elephants and world-class guides will unravel the sad and mystical story of the Knysna forest elephants…The Park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, who live in a controlled, free-range environment in the heart of the famous Garden Route.

Their elephants are orphans rescued from culling operations. They play a vital role in closing the gap between man and animal, allowing us to better understand the plight of the African Elephant and that of their peers in the Knysna Forest. Visitors leave the park with a sense of awe for these magnificent animals– they’ve been ‘touched by an elephant.’

In order to cater for all preferences they have a range of inspiring elephant experiences:• Daily Tours provide for a shorter experience of meeting, feeding and interacting with the gentle giants. • Elephant Back Rides and Walks allow for longer and more personal interaction. • Exclusive Sunrise/Sunset Safaris and Sundowner Safaris are the private and intimate encounters. • Sleeping with the Elephants in the unique Elephant Lodge is the ultimate experience where you get to spend all day and all night soaking up all the sights, sounds and delights of the elephant world! SHARK CAGE DIVING

Great white sharks are the apex predators of our oceans and Cape Town is one of the shark cage diving capitals of the world. Sharks are iconic and magnificent creatures. Experience a great white shark up close and personal with a shark diving or shark viewing tour (you don’t have to get in the cage!) and you do not need a scuba diving certificate to shark cage dive.

Great White Shark, Cage Diving takes place from April to September in False Bay (departs from Simon’s Town) and all year round from Gansbaai (2 hours from Cape Town).

elephant: African forest elephant (Loxodontacyclotis) and the African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana). Black rhinoceros (Dicerosbicornis):The black rhinoceros is a large, thick-skinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Rhinoceros may refer to either black or white rhinoceros.

African cape buffalo (Synceruscaffer): The African or cape buffalo is a large horned bovid. Buffalo are sometimes reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal, although the same claim is also made of hippos and crocodiles. It is considered the most dangerous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers.

Lion (Pantheraleo): The lion is a large carnivorous feline of Africa and northwest India, having a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. A lion may attack without provocation, and is considered by many to be the best of the Big Five.

Lions habituate the savanna where tall grasses, shrubs and bushes obscure and provide them cover and camouflage. This thick undergrowth is commonly referred to as jess. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural cover to stalk close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey. Lions do not generally avoid confrontation, but will usually face the challenger. Lions are unpredictable and may charge when suf-ficiently annoyed or confronted by danger.

Leopard (Pantherapardus): The leopard is a large, carnivorous feline having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. They are wary of humans and will take flight in the face of danger. The leopard is solitary by nature, and is most active between sunset and sunrise, although it may hunt during the day in some areas. Leopards can be found in

the savanna grasslands, brush land and forested areas in Africa. The male leopard is less than half the size of a male lion. The leopard is the smallest of the big cats, and rarely exceeds 200 lb (91 kg).

A visit to a South African reserve will, most likely, allow seeing not only the big 5 but other habitants of the African bush. Although the stock will be different between various reserves you’ll be able to watch: Giraffes, Elands, Springbok, Hippopotamus and Zebras.

CAPE PENINSULA BABOONS

The Baboon Matters Trust comprises a handful of dedicated volunteers who are at the forefront of baboon conservation in South Africa. The goals of the trust include raising awareness for the plight of baboons as well as education and training so that sustainable solutions can be found for areas of conflict between man and baboon. On a practical level the trust makes provision for the rescue and care of injured or sick baboons, and aims to support rehabilitation centres that focus their attention on baboons.

Cape Species: The Chacma Baboon (Papioursinus), also known as the Cape Baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. With a body length of up to 115 cm and a weight from 15 to 31 kg, it is among the largest and heaviest baboon species. The Chacma is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck.

Unlike the northern baboon species (the Guinea, Hamadryas, and Olive Baboons), Chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward sloping face. Males can have canine teeth as long as 2 inches (longer than a lion’s canine teeth). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, males being considerably larger than females. The Chacma Baboon is found in southern Africa, ranging from South Africa north to Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. Size and color vary within that range.

Chacmas usually live in social groups composed of multiple adult males, adult females, and their offspring. Occasionally, however, very small groups form that include only a single adult male and several adult females. Chacma troops are characterized by a dominance hierarchy. Female ranking within the troop is inherited through the mother and remains quite fixed, while male ranking is tenuous and changes often. Chacmas are unusual among baboons in that neither males nor females form strong relationships with members of the same sex. Instead, the strongest social bonds are often between unrelated adult males and females. (Wikipedia)

BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINS

A visit to the famous Boulders Beach penguins should be part of every Cape Town itinerary. The penguins from this growing colony allow for close encounters with these famous sea birds - and most tourists fall helplessly in love with them. The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and these aquatic flightless birds are listed as endangered.

The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy - part of the penguins’ diet. Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town. It’s easily accessible by bus, car, taxi or train.

COOL-RUNNINGS

It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family.

How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Take the N1 towards Paarl, take Exit 23 at the R302 Durban Road/Willem van Schoor Ave. (off ramp is opposite Toys’R’us™.) Then turn left at the top into Willem van Schoor Ave. First set of traffic lights left again into Mispel Road. At the intersection with Carl Cronje Drive proceed straight into Cool-Runnings entrance which leads you to the public parking facilities.Visit www.cool-runnings.co.za for more information.

PRECIOUS STONES

Southern Africa is often considered the “gemstone capital of the world” as almost half of the world’s gemstones are found in this part of the world. While some may only think of gemstones as the fabulous and expensive varieties like Diamonds and Tanzanite, there are also many other beautiful and unusual gemstones that are associated with Southern Africa – like Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pietersite, Malachite, Verdite, Blue lace Agate, Sodalite, and many more.

One of the most popular and convenient places to experience the amazing beauty and variety of gemstones that are found and crafted locally is right here in the V&A Waterfront at the popular Scratch Patch and Mineral World in Dock Road next to the parking garage, and just down from the Two Oceans Aquarium.

The Scratch Patch has become world-famous as a place where you can have loads of fun “scratching” for your favourite gemstones from hundreds of thousands of tumble-polished stones that quite literally cover the floor. This is a truly original concept that has been copied in other parts of the world. According to how many gemstones you wish to take home, visitors have a choice from a small bag to a large cup container.

At the Mineral World factory shop you can see an incredible range of gemstone items including stone carvings and other “art” pieces; high-quality “investment” gems (like Tanzanite and Diamonds); jewellery of all kinds; and lots of inexpensive gemstone items that make ideal take-home-gifts. You will also discover a large range of mineral specimens, rough gemstone pieces, and fossils that will fascinate you and bring out the geologist in you!

Besides the outlet at the V&A Waterfront, there are also Scratch Patch/Mineral World branches at Simon’s Town (Dido Valley Road, and also the site of the Topstones tumble-polishing and gem-crafting factory), and at the West Coast Ostrich Farm (Van Schoorsdrif Road, just off the N7). So, make sure that you discover the magic of gemstones!

OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR

Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive

production process making it costly as well as beautiful.

Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in high-end demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993.

After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world.

South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.

They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and elegancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted.

They spent months looking for and visiting factories all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals. In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone. Ostrich leather and Mohair products can be found at Karoo Classics. Once at the top visitors enjoy spectacular views and the peaceful feeling of being over onethousand meters above the city below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015www.tablemountain.net

KIRSTENBOSCH

The most beautiful garden in Africa. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The Garden covers 36 hectares in a 528 hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. Kirstenbosch lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, also known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

Rich in cultural and natural heritage this

destinations includes the famous Cape Point.

Due to the variety of wildlife that occurs here

it is the only section of the Table Mountain

National Park that is fenced and visitors should look out for

Eland, Red Hartebeest, Bontebok and Zebra. Be sure to

visit the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre that showcases all the plants and animals

to look out for in a particular season and is full of informative signage.

This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from

the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural andnatural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top.

P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.

Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit www.sanparks.org

BOULDERS BEACH

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque

mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley

of Wellington, full of surprises and variety,

heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the

western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme

and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by

the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before

Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More

French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley

of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers

attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and

theirwagons.

You might’ve seen it elsewhere. London. New York. Melbourne. Singapore. And hopefully you’ve tasted it too. But this is it: the motherland. Nando’s has its roots in South Africa (as we never tire of telling people) and has become one of the country’s most celebrated and delicious exports. For good reason, too.

Nando’s is all about delectable chicken, flame-grilled to perfection and infused with our trademark PERi-PERi flavour.

We grill our chicken over an open fire, since we figure our ancestors knew what they were doing. Seriously though, there’s nothing like a flame to bring out the succulent, smokey flavours in a piece of chicken. Of course, flame-grilled food is also good for those arteries.

Our PERi-PERi sauces also work to make our meals healthier. It’s true. Ask the academics. In a recent study by the British Journal of Nutrition, peri-peri was found to lower the glycaemic index of food. This means that you get an extra health bang for your buck with every Nando’s bite. To say nothing of the flavour. (Actually, we say quite a lot about the flavour.)

And when you’re looking for the best possible side to accompany your chicken-shaped piece of goodness, look no further than our veggie options. Salads, PERi spinach, coleslaw, roast veg and flame-grilled mielies (what we South Africans call corn – learn it now) are all available, as are chips (which, really, you should try – everything in moderation, including moderation), potato wedges and spicy rice.

Our Vitality Meal has been endorsed by one of the country’s leading health bodies and is specifically tailored for those waistline watchers.

Nando’s offers something for everyone, which is a good thing considering the diversity of the South African people – let alone the 30 countries around the world where you can find us. Ultimately, it’s the good stuff: good for your belly and good for your body.
