Hello all! My name is Bennett, I am a happy, healthy purebred Newfoundland in search of a forever family. My first family loved me but just did not have the time and I ended up spending most of my time outdoors in the back yard. They decided it would be best to surrender me so at the beginning of March they did that, and I came to a foster home with HANR. I had not spent time with other animals, kids or rules, the rules here are insane! Foster mom has been a little demanding if you ask me. She gives me lots of treats for doing what she asks me to do so that is an even trade. Here I have 3 other pups to live with and I have gotten along great with them. They are all giants, but they are seniors; they do not always appreciate my efforts to play with them because I can get rough when I play. I have also been exposed to children and I do not mind those wee ones a bit! I have learned to be a good house dog and I like it that way. I am house broken but sometimes, when I am new places, I forget that. My foster mom says I have the brain of a two-year-old in a 130lb body. Sometimes I guess it is hard to remember, because of my size, that I had to start everything from scratch. I combat the things I would rather not do by flopping on my back and becoming dead weight, I like to get my way. This includes wrestling and sometimes mouthing. FM says that hurts. I do not ever bite out of aggression, but I do mouth. I have loved all the new people I have met, all of them. I get excited, I still need to learn how to greet them politely. My idea of a perfect forever home would have another large dog or two who is my size who loves to play. I like smaller dogs but do not realize my size I am afraid I might accidentally hurt a smaller dog. I need exercise and a lot of it! I guess an environment with a lot of structure using positive/reward-based training and willing to do that for as long as it takes until I am the best boy that I can be. An experienced, active person or active family is required. A home I do not care for my back feet being touched or my bottom being brushed but have learned to tolerate my front feet and ears being touched. FM: Bennett just turned 2 in February 2021. He is big and handsome, and healthy, he probably has some filling out yet to do. His description was pretty accurate, he is easily over stimulated in many different situations. The commands he has learned in the house are consistently adhered to but outside or different environments or with change he gets overly excited and pretty much forgets everything he has learned. He is very bright, highly motivated (both food and praise) and learns quickly; He has learned that it is important to potty outside, sit, down, wait, off and no, barking has greatly improved, and he knows now that my forearms are not just random play toys but will still mouth if it is because he is resisting something he does not want to do. That is a lot with experienced children over 8 would be fine with me.

A home

I do not care for my back feet being touched or my bottom being brushed but have learned to tolerate my front feet and ears being touched.

He is very bright, highly motivated (both food and praise) and learns quickly; He has learned that it is important to potty outside, sit, down, wait, off and no, barking has greatly improved, and he knows now that my forearms are not just random play toys but will still mouth if it is because he is resisting something he does not want to do. to learn in a short period of time. He does have a stubborn streak a mile wide, like most two-year old’s do!

He is currently taking medication to help his busy mind slow down enough that he can focus and learn better. It is being used as a temporary training tool at this time. Whether or not it will not be a “temporary” aide is unknown right now.

He is not a good passenger and needs to be tethered, always, while in the car. If he is not and is given any chance to escape, he will. Also, if he is not, he will wrestle to be in the driver’s seat.

He will need a lot of continued, patient training, could probably use a job – swim or draft. Basically, a lot of any kind of exercise to take his edge off. He needs a family or owner who is very experienced in positive reinforcement training. A family who is committed to giving him proper exercise at least twice a day. Another giant dog or two that also loves to run and play.

He will be worth every minute of effort because he is just an all-around good guy who is eager to please but does not know the ways of the world yet.

He is neutered, chipped, up to date on vaccinations, current on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.

Our adoption fee is $350.00 and we have a formal adoption agreement that will require signatures.

A fenced yard with a minimum height of 4-feet is required for adoption.

We cover Western MO., Kansas, Western IA., Nebraska and Northeastern OK. We only adopt out in our covered areas.
